FSQA Reminder: All swine, beef, sheep,

dairy cattle, dairy goat,

market goat, rabbit, and poultry ex-

hibitors must be FSQA certified in

order to show at the county fair or

State Fair. Contact the Extension

Office with questions.

Premise ID Program

Tyson Fresh Meats is requiring Premise IDs for all swine bought

through a county fair. This is includes Washington County.

In order for you to exhibit and sell your swine to Tyson you must

obtain a Premise ID for the farm your swine are housed at.

Applications for Premise IDs are available at

http://www.iowaagriculture.gov/animalIndustry/premiseIdentifica

tionProgram.asp. If the farm your swine are housed at already

has a Premise ID, you do not need to apply for a new one.

Once your Premise ID is obtained, please report it to the Exten-

sion Office, 319-653-4811.

Attention POULTRY EXHIBITORS: All poultry exhibited at the Washington County Fair must come from a Pullorum-Typhoid clean flock or have a negative test within 90 days of the fair. Gene Mohling will be blood testing poultry if needed when you arrive at the fair. If you do not have them blood tested prior to fair or have proof they come from a Pullorum-Typhoid clean flock, you can have them tested Mon-day, July 19 in the morning.

Production Broilers for County Fair

If you ordered Production Broilers for the county

fair, they will be arriving on June 2nd at the Ex-

tension Office. Please make arrangements to pick

these up first thing in the morning on the 2nd.

SCRAPIE ERADICATION PROGRAM

REMINDER A reminder that all sheep and goats (ewes, rams, does,

billies) must have an official scrapie program tag be-

fore being shown or sold. This includes feeder ani-

mals, market animals or breeding animals. Castrated

males are not required to be tagged. If you purchase

ewe lambs, be sure they are tagged by the original

owner and an Owner’s Statement with flock informa-

tion is provided.

For more information go to

http://www.animalagriculture.org/scrapie/Scrapie.h

tm or contact the Extension Office.

PSEUDORABIES RULES

In 2003, the USDA assigned Stage IV (4) status to

Iowa’s Pseudorabies program. How does this affect

you? Again this year, it eliminates the need for 4-

H/FFA members to test their herds prior to the

county fair. Pseudorabies vaccinations are no longer required,

although still strongly encouraged to help maintain our negative

status.

This does NOT affect the testing requirement for the Iowa State

Fair or other shows. Be sure to check rules for other shows.

USDA is requiring documentation on Country of Origin

Labeling on livestock.

How will this effect the fair: You will not need to show

your documentation to any fair or extension personnel,

this is for you to keep for your records. However, the affi-

davits that are signed at weigh-in or check-in have a state-

ment added to it stating you have this documentation.

4-H Member Use of the 4-H Name and Emblem

As a member of the organization, 4-H members are encouraged to use the 4-H emblem. The 4-H emblem means a four leaf clover,

blem by following these guidelines:

*Traditional color for the 4-H clover is green with the Hs in white or gold.

*The stem of the 4-H clover curves to the right (when viewed).

*The proportions of the 4-H clover may not be altered.

*Items including or containing the 4-H emblem can not be sold for

Thank you again!

Clover Kids shear Jim Nebel…. When Jim Nebel loses a bet he always pays up....it just may take him awhile. Nebel and his family

have served as mentors for the 4-H Clover Kid Sheep project since the program began six years

ago. Over 20 Clover Kids have visited the Nebel farm to learn about raising and showing

sheep. Their "graduates" have gone on to show sheep as 4-Hers at the Washington County Fair as

well as participate in numerous other project areas.

Last summer Nebel made a bet with his young protégés. If his daughter or son won a trophy in

the sheep show at the Washington County Fair he would let his Clover Kids shave his head. Nebel's

son, Zach, walked away with Senior Showmanship honors.

Recently, several of the Clover Kids visited the Nebel farm again so Nebel could make good on his bet. The clippers came out,

but instead of shearing sheep, the Clover Kids gave Jim Nebel a new hairdo. They each got a turn with the clippers and left

just enough hair so the kids that couldn't be there that day could have a turn on another day.

Jim Nebel is as good as his word. The Clover Kids can't wait until they can return to the Nebel farm and learn more

about sheep and see what the 2010 Washington County Fair will bring.
