Note of the Night

STRONG EFFORT

- On Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Penguins, the line of Conor Sheary, Lars Eller and Richard Panik skated together for 9:37 at five-on-five, scoring

two goals, recording 13 shot attempts while allowing one (92.86 shot attempt percentage) and recorded 10 shots on goal without allowing one.

- Lars Eller scored his second goal of the season during that game. Eller is now one point shy of his 300th career point (133g, 165a). With another point,

Eller can become the third Danish-born player in NHL history to reach the 300 point mark.

- Richard Panik recorded two assists in the game, marking his 100th and 101st career assist. The effort marked Panik's 32nd career multi-point game

and his fourth as a Capital.

- Conor Sheary scored his third goal in his 11th game as a Capital. Sheary, a former Buffalo Sabre and Pittsburgh Penguin, has a combined 16 points

(10g, 6a) in 20 career games against his two former teams.

- The Capitals recorded 42 shots against Pittsburgh on Tuesday, the most shots they've recorded in a single game this season.

Top Caps Facts

SWEET NICKY

- Nicklas Backstrom leads the Capitals with 19 points (7g, 12a) in 14 games, tied for the seventh-most points in the NHL through games played Feb. 16.

He's also on a four-game point streak (2g, 4a).

- Backstrom has recorded a point in 12 of the Capitals' 14 games. That's tied with Boston's Brad Marchand for the most games with a point in the

MassMutual East Division.

- Backstrom is now four assists shy of 700 career assists, where he would become one of three active players to reach the 700 assist mark and the fifth

Swedish-born player in NHL history, joining Nicklas Lidstrom (878), Henrik Sedin (830), Mats Sundin (785) and Daniel Alfredsson (713).

- Backstrom's 0.72 assists per game are tied for the second-most among active NHL players with at least 500 assists, and that is tied for the 17th-

highest rate in NHL history among players with 500 assists.

- Backstrom's goal against the Penguins on Sunday marked his 250th career goal. He became the fourth player in franchise history to reach the mark

(Alex Ovechkin: 711g; Peter Bondra: 472g; Mike Gartner: 397g).

- Backstrom's 250th career goal passed Peter Forsberg (249g) for the fourth-most goals scored by a Swedish-born center (Mats Sundin: 564g; Henrik

Zetterberg: 337g; Kent Nilsson and Thomas Steen: 264g).

NIGHT SHOW

- This season, the Capitals are 7-2-1 in games played later than 6 p.m. ET.

- Vitek Vanecek is 6-2-1 in games later than 6 p.m. ET with a 2.76 goals against average and a .912 save percentage.

- The Capitals average 3.60 goals per game in games played after 6 p.m. ET, and 3.25 goals per game in earlier instances.

- Washington has allowed 3.10 goals per game in games played after 6 p.m. ET, and 4.75 goals against per game in earlier instances.

GREAT 8

- At 711 goals, Alex Ovechkin now sits seven goals shy of passing Phil Esposito (717g) for the sixth-most goals in NHL history.

- Ovechkin’s career 0.61 goals per game rate (711g in 1,162 games) is the highest among the NHL’s eight players who have reached the 700-goal

milestone.

- Ovechkin has 146 career multi-goal games, 62 more multi-goal games than the next-closest player since Ovechkin's rookie season in 2005-06 (Sidney

Crosby: 84). That's more multi-goal games than 2,606 players have total goals during that span.

- Ovechkin has scored against 144 different NHL goaltenders. There have been 6,451 players in NHL history who have scored 144 or fewer goals in

their career.

- Ovechkin’s 15 career 30-goal campaigns trail only Gartner (17) for the most in League history. Additionally, his 15 consecutive 30-goal seasons are

tied with Gartner (1979-80–1993-94) and Jaromir Jagr (1991-92–2006-07) for the longest such run by an NHL player.

YOUNG V

- Jakub Vrana scored his fifth goal of the season on Tuesday against Pittsburgh, his second-straight game with a goal, which he has accomplished for

the second time this season (also: Jan. 14 and 15, 2g).

- Over the last three seasons, Vrana ranks fourth in the NHL with 1.44 goals per 60 minutes of play at five-on-five (min. 100 games), only trailing

Toronto's Auston Matthews (1.53), Montreal's Brendan Gallagher (1.49) and Alex Ovechkin (1.47).

- Vrana set career highs in goals (25), assists (27) and points (52) last season, despite only playing 69 games.

- Among the 69 players with at least 50 goals since 2018-19, Vrana’s two power play goals are the lowest among the group, four lower than Gallagher

and Colorado's Brandan Saad, who have the second-lowest.

- Vrana’s 14:32 TOI per game is the lowest among any player with 50 goals since 2018-19, and Philadelphia's Trevor van Riemsdyk and Carolina's

Andrei Svechnikov are the second-lowest at 15:45.

LEAVE IT TO VITEK

- Vitek Vanecek stopped 26 of the 27 shots he faced against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday, earning his sixth win of the season, which is tied with

Chicago's Kevin Lankinen for the most among rookie goaltenders.

- Tuesday marked Vanecek's 11th consecutive start, making him the fourth rookie goaltender in franchise history to start as many in a row (Jim Carey:

21-straight, 14-5-2-0 record in 1994-95; Braden Holtby: 15-straight, 8-7-0 record in 2011-12; Semyon Varlamov: 13-straight: 7-6-0 record in 2008-09).

- Vanecek was named the NHL's Rookie of the Month for January after posting a 5-0-2 record with a 2.78 goals-against average and .918 save

percentage in seven January appearances.

TEAM EFFORT

- The Capitals have scored a goal in all 14 games this season.

- Washington has had 11 different players score the first goal of the game. Only Nicklas Backstrom (3 times) and Conor Sheary (2 times) have scored

the team's first goal multiple times.

- The Capitals have had 18 different players score a goal this season. Only the Columbus Blue Jackets (20) and the Edmonton Oilers (19), while the

Toronto Maple Leafs also have 18.

JUSTIN TIME

- Justin Schultz's point streak of four-straight games (2g, 5a) came to an end on Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

- This season, Schultz has averaged 18:37 of ice time and has recorded seven points (2g, 5a) in 10 games.

- Schultz recorded three straight multi-point games (2g, 4a) from Jan. 24-28 for the first time in his career.

- Schultz currently ranks 18th in the NHL among defensemen with at least 10 games played in points per game (0.70) and sixth among all

Capitals, through games played Feb. 16.

- Schultz’s 72.2 on-ice goals for percentage at even strength leads the Caps (13 on-ice goals for, 5 against) and is fourth in the NHL among

defensemen with 10 games played, through games played Feb. 16.

- Additionally, Schultz’s 50.5 shot attempt percentage at five-on-five (137 shot attempts for, 134 against) ranks first on the Capitals among

defensemen.

SUPER CARLY

- John Carlson is tied for sixth among NHL defensemen in points (12) through games played Feb. 16.

- Carlson is 10 points shy of 500 points. He could become one of 10 active defensemen to reach the milestone.

- Carlson is now five goals shy of passing both Mike Green (113) and Calle Johansson (113) for the third-most goals in franchise history by a

defenseman.

- During the 2019-20 season, Carlson set personal highs for points (15g, 60a) and assists in a season, leading all NHL defensemen in both respective

categories.

- Carlson’s 60 assists last season were one shy of tying the franchise record for the most by a defenseman in a single season (Scott Stevens, 1988-89:

61a), and his 75 points were six shy of the record (Larry Murphy, 1986-87: 81).
