What began as an intimate gathering of friends has grown into an annual WAC event. We’ll again have our vegetarian potluck after a day of skiing, snowshoe-ing, or just relaxing. Bring hot dishes that can be heated in the mircrowave if you can. To save stress in the kitchen do as much prep work as you can at home. Can’t cook? If that is true... go to PCC and pick something up, or bring juices to drink, or flowers. March 07 6 PM

The annual snowpack analysis last week-end at Guye Cabin showed a base of 37”. Before the big storm that caused the mud-slide at Hyak we had 82”! The reports were that it rained over 12” that day, so we were quite worried that the basement of Guye Cabin would be flooded or that there would be other damage. Luckily, there was none. All those years of doing the right thing once again paid off for our Club. As you read this the snow has returned, so the skiing should be very good going forward. Our friend Cliff Mass told us that we are now over the hump with the winter. We might have reached our peak snowpack, and we will begin to see less new snow.

Have you renewed your membership? Our awesome membership chair Kristin Kaupang says there are still over 100 peo-ple who have not renewed for 2009! The renewal period is October thru December. Not sure if you are paid up? Just go to the website and look up your name! Please help us out and send your renewal in today. Check with your friends and family and make sure they have sent theirs in.

The widely renowned WAC Telemark and Randonee Class is going strong every Wednesday night. Everyone has a great time and enjoys the challenge of learning a new discipline. We love to watch all the graceful telemarkers. Wednesday night is also a favorite time for folks to come up for a night of midweek skiing at Central or Alpental, or enjoy Nordic on the Iron Horse or Cabin Creek trails. Vivian Darst is hosting the Cabin every Wednesday so please take advantage of her efforts and spend the night. Thanks Vivian!

Both the Backcountry Class and the Basic Climbing Class are getting ready to start. Mica Schonbeck, John Commiskey, and Ty Tyler’s Backcountry Class will be at the Cabin February 20-22. The Climbing Class

instructors will be up on March 14/15. The classes are a great way to meet some new friends and gain experience and skills. The WAC has the smartest, most helpful, and patient instructors! Helping instruct a class each year is a wonderful way to give a little back to our Club!

Folks are polishing and tuning up their bikes for the upcoming Chilly Hilly on Feb 22, and the famous Hog Loppet Ski Tour is Feb 28. March 07 is the Vegetarian Potluck and March 08 is the second annual Snoqualmie Loppet.

Returning this year after a 20 plus year hiatus is the WAC Fun Day! Mark your calendars- March 1! On the WAC trails we’ll have a ski race. The winner will have their name immortalized on the historic WAC Fun Day plaque (in the hallway). We’ll also have a ski/snowshoe treasure

hunt. There will be hot chocolate, cookies and a fire at the start/finish line. There will also be an awards ceremony and raffle in the WAC Dining Hall. Make your plans now to attend this event. Want to help out? Contact Eli Holmes.

The WAC is cool because it has something for everyone. Do what you can to help out or attend some of the activities going on this winter!

This is a fantastic year at Guye Cabin. We have an ever-growing awesome group of

wonderful people keeping the Cabin in good order once again this year. A collec-tive thank you goes to Karel Zikan, Eli Holmes, Archie Brenden, John Sargent, Dave Mitchell, and Vivian who have taken time to keep the Cabin organized and extra clean. Please be sure to help them out by doing some chores, hauling the trash and recycles home, and shoveling snow. Its very important this year to keep the path to the Cabin open and the snow off both the front and back steps. Everyone should allow 30 minutes to help out. Don’t know or unsure what to do? Ask someone! Parking is still a concern! Unload and then park at the North end of the Sahalie side. The Cabin is open from Friday evening until about 3:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

Guye Cabin is a true mountain lodge, and it is evident that the WAC has a very strong winter division. Be sure to be respectful of the other folks, and follow the cabin rules to ensure everyone has a good time. Be responsible and educate your guests and they will have an even better time. Yes, all guests need to do a chore too! Always at the Cabin, be sure to be respectful of the other folks, and follow the Cabin rules to ensure everyone has a good time.

All of this is what makes the Washington Alpine Club special! Our little club started in 1893, according to the Tacoma newspa-per, and is still going strong. Many folks know almost everyone in the club! It is made up of a lot of different little parts that come together as a exceptional out-door club. Our mission is to encourage the healthful enjoyment of the great out-doors, preserve its natural beauty, and to promote good fellowship among all lovers of nature.

See you at the pass!

Our friends at the Burke Museum of National History invite the WAC to their new exhibit:

Coffee: The World in Your Cup presents the story of one of the world’s most widely traded commodities and how it has affected cultures, economies, and environments across the globe. Coffee explores the environmental and social impacts of the coffee indus-try and recommends ways for consumers to make socially and environmentally responsible coffee purchases at the grocery store or in a coffee shop.

Just print out this coupon for a 2 for 1 admission to the Burke! This is perfect for an evening outing!

WAC Community

Guye Cabin from high above.

In the spirit of the mission of the WAC, bring your skis and snowshoes and experience healthful enjoyment of the great outdoors. Oh, and bring a friend so you can experience good fellowship with another lover of nature.

WAC ski Trails! Thanks to Eli Holmes and Karel Zikel, the WAC Trail System has returned!

Guye CabinGuye Cabin open Wednesday nights!

Guye Cabin will be open for overnight use every Wednesday! If you are in the tele/randonee class, or just prefer to ski dur-ing the week, you can ski Wednesday, then come by the Cabin for dinner or to relax before the class. You can stay overnight and get those first tracks on Thursday. We encourage everyone who is around on Wednesday to take advantage of this. Vivian Darst will open the Cabin about noonish on Wednesday (and then leave to ski) and then close up Thursday morn-ing.This is for current WAC members and their guests (fees are $10 for members $15 for guests so bring a check or cash) plus you’ll need to do a chore of some sort. The

Summit doesn’t plow as well during the week, so you might not have the superior parking we have on the weekend. After opening she will leave the kitchen door open. Vivian is the Cabin leader so ask her what you can do to help! Never been to Guye Cabin? Questions? Email me and I’ll give you the details. Thanks to Vivian for volunteering to do this each week! (Feb 11 Vivian has to work. Can someone take over this week?)

Snowshoes

Thanks to Bert Bradley, John Sargent, and Elaine Kelting for leaving loaner

snowshoes to the Cabin for people to use. There are now 4 pair of snowshoes that you can use to explore the WAC Trails. They are marked with Guye Cabin green tape so they are easily identified.

Do you have snowshoes you don’t use that you would be willing to donate? Do you have any antique equipment that you would like to see in a permanent home? Let us know and we’ll see if we have a place for it.

The Basic Climbing Class is just around the corner, and it is time to rally all instructors for the traditional Odd Fellows Basic Climbing Class Instructor Kickoff! So save the date----- Tuesday, February 10th at 6:30 p.m. at Odd Fellows Lodge in Ballard ---- pizza, beer and soda provided! (We have opted to forgo the traditional potluck - so a few bucks would be helpful.) The evening will be a time to socialize, meet new instructors, and help us make some plans for the Climbing Class to come. All previous instructors and previous climbing class students are welcome. Also - if you know someone who would be a good instructor and is willing to help with the class this year - bring them along! Looking forward to seeing you on the 10th!

February 10, 6:30 p.m. Odd Fellows Lodge in Ballard

The Snoqualmie Loppet is a 30K nordic ski tour. Unlike the famous Hog Loppet where once you leave Mission Ridge you are commit-ted, the Snoqualmie Loppet allows skiers to do as much as they are comfortable with. The tour will start after a ride up on the new Silver Fir lift. We’ll ski to Grand Junction, then around the Mount Catherine Loop to the Hyak Lodge. The next section in on the Iron Horse Trail to Crystal Springs. We’ll ski a loop around the Troll Hagen trails before walking the road to the North side of I90 and the DOT yard. We’ll look for markers that will take us to the Viking Loop on the Cabin Creek trail system, and the finish (we’ll find out for sure at the end) Suitable for classic or skate skis. Sign up with Mike. I’d like to get a picture at the start.
