CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE SPRING 2014

INSIDE THIS ISSUE:• The 10,000 Story Building™

HELP US BUILD THE 10,000 STORY BUILDING™

Each child coming through our doors has a unique story. Every day at Washburn, children’s lives are re-shaped through healing, compassionate therapeutic care.

The 10,000 Story Building™ is a place where stories of hope and healing abound.

Anxiety. Depression. Trauma. While our mental health treatment is customized for every child, the goal for the thousands of children we serve is the same: a healthier future and a happier story. The new facility will serve as a critical community resource. It will be a place where struggling children have a greater chance at growing into successful adults – a place where early intervention allows them to heal and avoid becoming one of the heartbreaking headlines we frequently hear on the nightly news.

I’m overwhelmed at the community’s generosity as we’ve raised 94% of our $24.5 million campaign goal. Arguably, the home stretch is sometimes the hardest. That’s why I ask you to help us during this final stretch:

Introduce others to Washburn’s work – Share Washburn’s mission with your friends and family so they can learn how The 10,000 Story Building™ impacts our entire community.

Leave a lasting legacy – Support children by purchasing a commemorative paver, bench or tree at the new site.

Double the impact on the community through your gift – Join hundreds of other community leaders, businesses and individuals who have donated to the campaign. Your gift will have twice the impact thanks to a matching grant.

With your generosity, you open the doors of The 10,000 Story Building™ to a child’s potential and possibility.

WASHBURN SERVES AS A CRITICAL SAFETY NET FOR THE COMMUNITY “Washburn is a fundamental community resource,” said Mark Dienhart, President and CEO of The Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation.

The fact that Washburn serves as a critical safety net for the community was one of the biggest reasons the foundation offered a $320,000 challenge grant to the capital campaign, Dienhart explained.

“The Schulze Family Foundation is supportive of a number of child-focused organizations in the community, and we came to realize that these agencies continually lean on Washburn’s expertise for children’s mental health,” Dienhart said. “Without the support of Washburn, other community organizations couldn’t make the progress they hope to make in changing children’s lives.”

Challenge Pool From Schulze Family Foundation Will Double Your Gift“Washburn’s reputation in the community is impressive, and the organization has done tremendous work,” said Dienhart.

Dienhart feels that the generosity of community businesses, foundations and individuals who have already supported the campaign is a testament to how highly the community values Washburn’s mission. More than 94% of the $24.5 million goal has been generously donated, and the remaining $1.5 million is critical to raise in this last phase of the campaign.

“The Schulze Family Foundation’s challenge grant is meant to inspire individuals who may think they can’t give enough to make an impact. But everyone – and every gift – can help Washburn meet a vital community need,” said Dienhart.

WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP! JOIN US IN RE-SHAPING CHILDREN’S STORIES Washburn’s therapeutic services change children’s lives and help write a new story for struggling children like Kanye.

When his feelings start to get overwhelming, five-year-old Kanye holds his breath, counts to five and exhales loudly to “let his steam out.” It’s one of the many self-calming strategies he learned in Washburn’s intensive therapeutic pre-school to help regulate his once out-of-control aggression.

Before, he would hit, yell or impulsively disobey rules that kept him safe, like running away from his mother into a busy street. He had even bullied a child on the bus and rallied the rest of his classmates to join in on the verbal attack.

Washburn’s clinicians helped Kanye’s mom develop consistent approaches to help diffuse his aggression. The intensive therapeutic pre-school and in-home therapy helped Kanye develop the self-regulation skills he needed to be ready for kindergarten.

Thanks to you, Washburn’s new facility will be a place where children’s stories and lives will be re-shaped for decades to come. Together, we’re creating The 10,000 Story Building™ — a place of hope and healing.

Freezing temps and snow haven’t slowed Mortenson’s construction efforts on the new facility!

To support The 10,000 Story Building™, 189 piles were driven a combined 3.25 miles underground last fall. Pouring of the first floor deck occurred in early February, and will be shortly followed by the structural steel framing, with the remaining two floors soon to follow. Enclosure of the building is expected to begin in early May. Later in the summer, work will focus on interior components and begin to create the therapeutic healing spaces for children and families.

We are looking forward to the Topping Off Celebration on April 1, 2014 and hard hat tours this summer — all in preparation for a late 2014 grand opening!

CONSTRUCTING A PLACE FOR YOUNG MINDS TO HEAL AND GROW

THE LANGER FAMILY INVESTS IN OUR COMMUNITY’S CHILDREN Amy and Bruce Langer have been long-time supporters of Washburn Center for Children – and now their three sons are among the newest donors to the capital campaign.

The Langer boys donated a portion of their allowance to help purchase a commemorative bench at the new site.

“Our kids can see the passion that we have, and we talk a lot about Washburn Center for Children,” explained Amy. “They donated a portion of their allowance to something that’s important to them, and this bench will give them a physical manifestation and reminder of their giving.”

Supporting a Critical Community Issue

As business owners and parents, Amy and Bruce believe in the importance of children’s mental health and its impact in the community.

“Mental health is foundational to a child’s success in schools and families. When kids are happy, families are happy and our classrooms are happy,” said Amy, who is a former Washburn Board President and currently serves on the capital campaign steering committee. “By supporting Washburn, not only are we helping individual children and their families, we’re helping the community realize the importance of this widespread issue.”

“Everyone knows how to help a child when they break an arm. But, it’s much harder to recognize and treat a child who’s hurting on the inside,” Bruce said. “We have a sense of pride to be able to talk about Washburn’s programs and know how they make such a difference in families’ lives.”
