After years of effort, badweather could not put a stopto the Oct. 12 groundbreaking forthe new Civic Center that willfunction as a library/mini-policestation.The new building will be built

at the corner of Van Dyke and Re-public, just north of Nine Mile inWarren.Warren Library Director

Oksana Urban said, “As librarydirector, I look to the building ofa 9,400-square foot state-of-the-art library. The facility will havecomputers, study rooms, a com-munity room that will seat 80people and a special needs play-ground.“The staff that will work here

are creative, resourceful andhelpful. They will reach out tothe surrounding community andprovide the kinds of servicesthat benefit all. I also want tothank the citizens of Warren forapproving the millage that fi-nances this project. They helpedmake a lot of dreams come true.”Urban said the Warren library

just opened up the new DorothyBusch branch of the library earli-er this year.Frank Pasternak, chairman of

the Warren Library Commission, said when they campaigned forthe millage to finance improve-ments to the library sytem a fewyears ago, they made a lot ofpromises about what would becreated with taxpayer money.“What you’re seeing here to-

day is the result of the efforts of

so many,” Pasternak said. “Thisis going to be a beautiful libraryonce construction is completed.”Warren Mayor James Fouts

said the project is not being paidfor out of the city’s general fund, but from the library millage andTIFA funding.Warren Police Commissioner

William Dwyer told the people atthe ceremony that he not onlywas born in the neighborhoodbut “grew up here” where the

Civic Center is going to be built.“I really think this building will

help reduce crime once it is com-pleted,” Dwyer said.“This will be a mini-police sta-

tion that will be open 24 hours aday, seven days a week. It’s justone of the things we’re doing toreduce crime in this neighbor-hood.Library officials say the new

building should be open by thespring of 2019.

Stains happen, and whenstains happen on one’s car seatpeople turn to social media toshare experiences and track thelatest trends in fashion and de-sign.So does Chevrolet, said GM

spokeswoman Katie Amann. When working on the 2018

Equinox’s interior, the designteam crafted a comfortable, fash-ion-forward interior with fea-tures and materials developedfor easier everyday use, Amannsaid.During the process, they fol-

lowed real people on Instagramand other social media channels, along with designers and lifestyleinfluencers, monitoring colorand fabric trends as well as com-mon consumer problems such asdark-wash denim staining otherfabrics it touches – includingnew-vehicle seats.“Many fashion trends disap-

pear after a year of two, whilethe Equinox is designed for thelong haul, making the durabilityof its materials very important,”said Mara Kapsis, color and trimdesigner for the 2018 Equinox.“By following real people and ab-sorbing the little things in lifethat help or hinder them – suchas photos posted of muddypaws, spilled drinks or stains onthe seats – we learned moreabout how we could make thenew Equinox easier to live withand enjoy every day.”The 2018 Equinox interior of-

fers a durable denim-like seatfabric that is easy to clean, oravailable leather seating surfaceswith a treatment to resist stain-ing and scuffing, Kapsis said. The denim-like material’s ap-

pearance and color were in-spired by contemporary trendsin black denim clothing, whilethe material offers exceptionalwear resistance and easy clean-up.“The fabric is very durable,

while the color and even the pat-tern help hide dirt and stains,”said Kapsis. “It’s also very easyto vacuum and clean, whichsaves owners time and helpskeep the interior looking greatyear after year.”As for the available leather-

trimmed seats, the newly devel-oped surface treatment makes iteasier to clean any “bleeding” ofother materials such as newjeans and annoying scuffs fromblack leather belts or boots.“The Equinox is designed for

the way our customers live,” saidKapsis. “Complementing its stylewith durable, easy-to-clean mate-rials helps ensure it and its own-ers make a fashion statementevery day.”Fashion forecasting was also

part of the process, as the design

team needed to anticipate colortrends about three years aheadof the Equinox’s launch, which istypical for vehicle design.“More than anticipating where

design will be when the vehicle isintroduced, you’ve got to bal-ance it with a timeless qualitythat will keep it looking modernfor years to come,” said Kapsis.“There’s risk involved with that, but it paid off with the new Equi-nox.”The new 2018 Equinox, said

Kapsis, is a fresh and moderncompact SUV that features an ex-pressive design, increased cargospace, the latest connectivity, anexpanded roster of availablesafety features and an all-newrange of turbocharged engines –including the segment’s first tur-bo-diesel.Purposeful technologies are

designed to help keep passen-gers safe, comfortable and con-nected, Amann said. Teen Driveris offered, along with safety fea-tures such as Safety Alert Seat,Surround Vision, Forward Colli-son Alert and more.

“Auburn University andTARDEC researchers are advanc-ing this technology to the pointwhere it is ready for commercialand military uses,” said DavidBevly, director of Auburn Univer-sity’s GPS and Vehicle DynamicsLaboratory and professor of me-chanical engineering. “Today’slive demonstration under real-world traffic conditions high-lights just how far this paradigmchanging technology has come.”Auburn’s two Peterbilt 579

trucks led the mixed convoy ofcommercial and military trucksusing autonomous platooningsoftware that Bevly’s researchgroup developed. The autonomy software uti-

lizes GPS and other on-board ve-hicle data shared over DedicatedShort Range Communication(DSRC) radios in conjunctionwith radar measurements to al-low the convoy to maintain a setdistance between each truck.“We are proud to contribute

key technology and expertise tothis groundbreaking demonstra-tion as part of our longstandingpartnership with TARDEC,” saidChris Roberts, dean of theSamuel Ginn College of Engineer-ing at Auburn University. “Theimportant work Dr. Bevly and hisautonomous vehicle research de-velopment team are engaged inwith TARDEC will go a long waytoward bringing this exciting, life-saving technology to commercialand military application.”The Army’s vehicles in the

convoy, two M915 “line haul”tractors carrying flatbed trailersloaded with cargo containers, areeach equipped with TARDEC’sAutonomous Mobility AppliquéSystem technology which en-ables a full range of capabilities, from driver-warning features likein today’s commercial automo-biles to fully-autonomous opera-

tion, which can move the vehiclealong a path using pre-pro-grammed waypoints.“Driverless capabilities can do

so much for our soldiers andtheir missions,” said BernieTheisen, project manager forTARDEC’s leader-follower pro-gram. “We can move soldiers outof the convoy trucks and intomissions where they’re uniquelysuited, and this technology cansignificantly increase the safetyfor those soldiers who do contin-ue to operate the convoys.”On display at this demonstra-

tion are the vehicle’s automatedacceleration and decelerationfeatures, which allow the vehicleto adjust its speed and brakingaccording to instructions passedback to it from the lead vehicle.Additionally, the Army’s trucks

are enabling the automatedsteering feature. With this capa-bility, the truck’s computer re-ceives information from the leadvehicles and steers the truck ac-cordingly. This is the first timethe Army has tested this capabil-ity on a public roadway, saidTheisen.

hicles Scale-Up Facility, the re-search and development hub forthe IACMI Vehicles TechnologyArea. This event capped a near-$50 million investment in world-class manufacturing equipmentand improvements to the Cork-town facility, recognizing thefuture of innovative research inboth composites and metals.

The institute’s co-location wasannounced in 2015 and, one yearlater, Wegehaupt said, the two in-stitutes celebrated their com-bined investment in the innova-tion center, which began the ac-quisition and installation ofequipment in the joint facility.

IACMI’s and LIFT’s invest-ments have allowed institutemembers, partners, and othersin the industry to conduct re-search and development proj-ects in both lightweight metalsand advanced composites.

It also continues to provide ed-ucation spaces for students andadult learners focused on devel-oping careers in the compositesand lightweight materials indus-tries.

“I appreciate the incredible in-vestment that these two world-class research and developmentinstitutions are making in ourstate and the city of Detroit,”Gov. Rick Snyder said.

“With Michigan’s talentedworkforce and reinvented busi-ness climate, I am confident thatthis partnership between IACMI,LIFT and our state will be an ex-tremely prosperous one.”

Manufacturing Day is a nation-al celebration of modern manu-facturing, encouraging the nextgeneration of STEM workers torecognize the innovative possi-bilities of the future of manufac-

turing in the U.S. Last year’s Man-ufacturing Day reached morethan 267,607 students, and hadmore than 595,000 participantsoverall.

This year’s national event con-tinues to grow, and theIACMI/LIFT ribbon-cutting en-gaged a large audience of K-12students, Michigan governmentand state university stakehold-ers, Michigan State Universityengineering students, and indus-try professionals from acrossmultiple states.

The Detroit-area students par-ticipating in the event engaged inhands-on STEM events such asbuilding hovercrafts out of com-pact discs, and creating an auto-mobile out of different materi-als and testing the characteris-tics through virtual reality, Wege-haupt said.

They also had the opportunityto tour the facility and speakwith engineers and MSU engi-neering students about careeroptions.

The students gathered withmore than 200 industry, govern-ment, and university attendeesto join for speaking remarkswhere they learned more aboutthe impact manufacturing has onthe Detroit community, the Stateof Michigan and the countryfrom the leaders on hand for theevent.

“Being headquartered in De-troit, it is critical for our instituteto open our doors to Detroit-areastudents to learn about LIFT andto understand the opportunitiesfor engineering careers and inno-vative research that will affectthe future of the auto industry –and is being done right here inour community,” said LIFT Exec-utive Director Lawrence E.Brown.

Cadillac V-Performance racingteam Konica Minolta Cadillac re-tired from Oct. 7’s IMSA Weath-erTech Championship Motul PetitLe Mans just over two hours in,but accumulated enough run timeto win the DPi drivers and teamchampionships for the year 2017.The Mustang Sampling Cadil-

lac closed the year as the TequilaPatrón North American En-durance Cup (TPNAEC) champi-ons and Cadillac was crownedmanufacturer champ.Cadillac’s season-ending hon-

ors included:• DPi manufacturer champi-onship.

• TPNAEC manufacturer title.• Ricky and Jordan Taylor2017 IMSA WeatherTech DPidriver champions.

• Konica Minolta Cadillac DPiteam champions.

• Mustang Sampling Cadillacdrivers Joao Barbosa, Chris-tian Fittipaldi and Filipe Al-buquerque win the TPNAECDPi driver championship.

• Mustang Sampling Cadillacwins the TPNAEC DPi teamchampionship.

• Whelen Engineering driversDane Cameron and EricCurran finish second in thedriver’s championship.

• Mustang Sampling Cadillacdrivers Joao Barbosa andChristian Fittipaldi finishthird in the driver’s champi-onship.

• Cadillac teams combined towin seven races in 2017:Rolex 24 Hours At Daytona,Twelve Hours of Sebring,Long Beach, Circuit of theAmericas, Detroit, WatkinsGlen, and Canadian TireMotorsport Park.

The No. 10 Konica MinoltaCadillac team with drivers Rickyand Jordan Taylor, with help inthe long races fromMax Angelelli,Jeff Gordon, Alex Lynn and RyanHunter-Reay, were able to capital-ize on their five-win season forthe team and driver crowns.“We are happy to win the

championship,” Ricky Taylorsaid. “The team and car haverun flawlessly all year. It’s toobad to have an issue at Petitwhen we were fighting for the TP-NAEC title. It was a crazy start tothe race with the wet and thengoing dry. It was a lot of work atthe start.“The team did a great job all

year, everyone at Cadillac, Dal-lara and our sponsors at KonicaMinolta all have a hand in thischampionship. The five wins tostart the season was great andespecially winning the Rolex 24and Sebring – the stuff all driversdream about. To win it with mydad, Jordan and Max, who is alsofamily, is really a dream season.”“Being with Ricky the past four

years, we have been close to win-ning the championship,” JordanTaylor said. “It means a lot to winit with family and Max is like fam-ily, as well. We started the yearstrong with five straight wins.Add the victories at Daytona andSebring, Ricky had all of thosepoles, and we won Long Beach, too. Winning at Detroit is great,as well. We are a family team. The crew is very close. We werethe first ones to work with theCadillac this year.”“We are really happy to win the

drivers and team championship,as well as helping to secure themanufacturer championship forCadillac,” Wayne Taylor said. “Wehad finished every single racethis year. I am not really surewhat happened today. We lostdrive to the car and we had towithdraw from the race.“That doesn't take away from

what we accomplished this yearwith five straight wins and takingthe big ones at Daytona and Se-bring.“Winning in Detroit for Cadillac

is always special, as is winningon the streets of Long Beach forKonica Minolta. A great accom-plishment by the team, everyoneat Cadillac, Dallara, ECR Enginesand, of course, our sponsor Koni-ca Minolta.”

DETROIT (AP) – Heated andcooled seats. Backup cameras.Panoramic glass roofs. Not exactly what springs to

mind when you think of a pickup. But that’s what American truckbuyers increasingly want, spend-ing an average of $46,844 on apickup, according to Kelley BlueBook. That’s more than the starting

price of luxury SUVs like the Mer-cedes GLC or the Lexus RX. In2016, pickup trucks made up alittle more than a third of all vehi-cles that sold for over $50,000.At the State Fair of Texas this

month, Ford Motor Co. is dis-playing its most expensive pick-up yet: The F-Series Super DutyLimited, a luxury heavy-dutytruck with a starting price of$80,835. It has custom two-toneleather seats, a heated steeringwheel wrapped in hand-stitchedleather and high-tech featureslike a 360-degree camera systemthat guides drivers when they’rehitching up a trailer.A fully-loaded F-450 – the

biggest version of the Super Duty– will top out at $94,455. It’s capa-ble of towing an Air Force F-35fighter plane, but it also has mas-saging seats.Fiat Chrysler’s Ram brand is

also showing luxury pickups atthe fair. The 2018 Laramie Long-horn Southfork edition has a wal-nut-trimmed steering wheel and4G Wi-Fi capability. The HeavyDuty Lone Star Silver, sold onlyin Texas, has a luxurious brightchrome grille. Both start around$50,000 and will be available lat-er this fall.On a recent visit to the fair,

some visitors balked at theprices. One said he’d rather buya Mercedes S-Class if he had$80,000 to spare. But others tookthe high prices in stride.“It’s awesome. I’d love to be

going down the road in it right

now,” said Paul Churchill as hesat in the cab of the Super DutyLimited. “If you’re looking for allthe technology they have inthese trucks now, it’s probablyworth it.”Demand for luxury trucks is

strong. Ford says around half ofthe individual buyers who pur-chase Super Duty trucks opt forone of its three luxury versions –King Ranch, Lariat or Platinum. The Limited version will sit atthe top of that heap. The luxury trend has helped

pickups outpace the industry interms of the prices they com-mand. So far this year, the aver-age vehicle is selling for $34,671,up 38 percent from 2005. The av-erage price of a full-size truckhas jumped 54 percent in thatsame period, to $46,844.Rebecca Lindland, an execu-

tive analyst with Kelley BlueBook, says luxury truck buyerscut across age spans but share amindset. They could buy a Ger-man luxury car, she says, butthey want the blue-collar brawnof an American truck – or, in Toy-ota’s case, a full-size truck builtin Texas.“These are people with money.

These are people who have beenvery successful,” she said. “Allthey want is the most tarted-uppickup they can buy.”Ford kicked off the luxury

truck trend in 1999 when it intro-duced the Harley-Davidson F-Se-ries. The King Ranch edition fol-lowed in 2001. General MotorsCo. brought out its high-end GMCSierra Denali pickup in 2002; theChevrolet Silverado High Coun-try followed in 2014. The RamLaramie Longhorn arrived in2010.Todd Eckert, Ford’s truck

group marketing manager, stressed that Ford is still meetingthe needs of buyers who want aneveryday work truck.
