Sometimes it takes a Britishwoman to design the All-Ameri-can truck.Helen Emsley, executive direc-
tor, Global GMC Design and UserExperience, leads a team of de-signers who continuously pushdesigns to create a distinctivelook and feel to the GMC lineup.Emsley said that having a
strong team is important when itcomes to design, especially inher case, because they don’treally have pickup trucks inGreat Britain.She started to work for GM
right after she completed her ed-ucation at the Royal College ofArt in London and BirminghamPolytechnic.“Vauxhall had just closed down
their design studio,” Emsley said.“So I got a job at Opel and wentstraight to Russelsheim, Ger-many. This was a few months be-fore the fall of the Berlin Wall.“I really didn’t speak German,
but when I wanted to practicethat language, all my German col-leagues said they wanted to learnEnglish. When I left seven oreight years later, they all spokegreat English, though some had abit of Yorkshire accent. But myGerman? Not so good.”After Germany, Emsley came to

tached her to the new Sierra de-sign team. She pointed out thatpickup trucks aren’t somethingthat they have in Britain. Thatwas the point, Welburn said. Shewould bring a new perspective tothe vehicle.“I had a lot to learn,” Emsley
said. “Trucks really are a differ-ent way of thinking. And, like Isaid, I was the color-and-trimperson. I had a lot to learn fromother people on the team aboutoverall truck design.”Emsley said that what she
found so interesting was thatover the past few years there’sbeen a real split in truck usersand how they use their vehicles.

This October’s events includeemployee- and dealership-spon-sored fundraising walks; aChevrolet Certified Servicematching rebate contributionprogram; appearances by a spe-cially themed pink Camaro SSpace car and a USAC NationalMidget Car.
The towers of General Motors’Renaissance Center world head-quarters in Detroit are onceagain lit with bands of pink tocommemorate the fact that Octo-ber is Breast Cancer AwarenessMonth, Farah said.
Even the all-new ChevroletSpark has joined in the fight,Farah said. A special “Pink Out”Spark was designed to honorbreast cancer survivors and sup-porters.
The special Spark wears a pro-duction Techno Pink exterior fin-ish and is embellished with cus-tom pink elements inside andout.
The “Pink Out” Spark will visitselected community walksthroughout the month, Farahsaid.
Last year, with Chevrolet’s sup-port, the American Cancer Socie-ty raised $1,079,633 in contribu-tions to Making Strides AgainstBreast Cancer.
The money helps fund re-search, wellness and breast can-cer awareness education, andsupport for breast cancer pa-tients and their families.

GM again this year is helping promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Nathan and Catherine Forbesof Franklin, Mich., were amongfive University of Michigan vol-unteer fundraisers awarded theDavid B. Hermelin Award forFundraising Volunteer Leader-ship by the school on Oct. 9.
The couple made a significantgift to the Michigan AthleticsCampus facilities project, saidschool spokeswoman Judy Mal-colm. The Forbeses sponsorMaize and Blue Go Pink, an eventto raise awareness and funds forbreast cancer research at theU-M Health System’s Compre-hensive Cancer Center. Cather-ine Forbes also serves on theUniversity of Michigan Museumof Art (UMMA) National Leader-ship Council, and with Nathan,has supported UMMA Glow, themuseum’s benefit.
Other Hermelin Award recipi-ents included:
• Paul and Amy Blavin of LosAngeles who founded the BlavinScholars Program that awardsscholarships to 22 former fostercare students. Hermelin was an active vol-unteer fundraiser for the univer-sity during two different cam-paigns.

On the one hand, she said,there are the traditional truckowners. They are very brand loy-al and use the vehicles for work,whether it’s farming or construc-tion work or whatever. They justwant trucks that they can ownfor a decade and put 300,000miles on.She went on to say that there
is a newer breed of truck ownerwho likes the hauling capacity ofa pickup truck, but still wants avehicle they can use in more reg-ular circumstances.So in the past, Emsley said, in-
teriors of pickups were reallybuilt around function. Ownerswould have been happy trans-planting the interiors of their oldtrucks into their new trucks.But as reasons why people
owned pickups evolved, whatpeople wanted in pickup interi-ors evolved as well, she said.So in a model like the Sierra,
which is aimed at customerswho want all the truck capacitiesof the Silverado, but with moreluxurious features, it became thejob of Emsley’s design team tocome up with designs that metthose expectations.Exemplifying industrial sculp-
ture, the GMC Sierra’s overall de-sign is a defining attribute of thebrand – focusing on the use ofauthentic materials, definedlines, sophisticated colors andthe latest technology.“When people look in the
rearview mirror, I want a GMC tostand out,” says Emsley. “I wantthem to know it’s a GMC; to tellfrom the unmistakable chromegrille and the ‘C-shaped’ LED sig-nature that it’s a GMC. It’s aboutprecision and quality, makingsomething different from all oth-er brands.”Emsley said her interest in de-
sign began in textiles while grow-ing up in Great Britain and at-tending the Royal College of Art.She compares using real materi-als such as woods, leather andmetal in automotive design to us-ing the best components avail-
able to create high fashion.“You can have a fantastic de-
sign for a dress, but if you’re notusing quality materials, the dresshangs terribly,” she said. “We feelstrongly about using quality ma-terials and crafting refined,sculpted silhouettes for our vehi-cles.”That attention to detail has
been well-received. GMC re-ceived Kelley Blue Book’s 2014and 2015 Brand Image Award forMost Refined Brand, based onthousands of online consumers’perceptions.Emsley, who drives a Sierra
heavy-duty pickup, believes ex-pert craftsmanship and function-ality appeal to everyone.Whether it’s a reconfigurable in-strument cluster and durablecarpet on the interior, or chromedetails and bold lines on the ex-terior, GMC embodies premiumdesign, she said.“Everyone deserves a beauti-
ful truck,” Emsley said. “We wantto give people what they wantand take GMC design as far as wecan. There are no boundaries towhat we can do.” And let’s faceit, Emsley said, the pickup truckmarket is very competitive.“GM faces tough competition
from other automakers and theonly way to stay ahead of thegame is to pay attention to thedetails and provide the featuresand luxury that today’s buyerswant,” she said.
The Macomb Community Col-lege Foundation has been noti-fied of a $700,000 gift that will befunded from an anonymousdonor’s estate.The donation is part of the col-
lege’s first philanthropic campaign,Mission Macomb: Creating Op-portunities and Changing Lives,which is focused on supporting thecommunity’s economic vitality bystrengthening the region’s talentpool, fostering innovation and en-trepreneurship, and enhancingcultural enrichment.“MCC won’t see this money
right away,” said Dawn Magretta,director of the Macomb Commu-nity College Foundation. “Thepledge is set to come from thedonor’s estate, so the donor willhave to die first. This sort ofpledge is actually pretty commonfor many schools, but it’s a firstfor MCC. A lot of people want toleave a legacy while they are stillalive to support programs andschools such as ours.”Magretta said that the donor,
who wishes to remain anony-mous, is not a former student atMCC. The donation comes aspart of the school’s first philan-thropic campaign.“We’re in the middle of the
school’s endowment campaign,”Magretta said. “It’s not somethingwe’ve done before. The goal is toraise $10 million. The campaignstarted in July of 2013. Right now,we’ve raised $4.5 million.”Magretta said the $700,000 is
what’s known as a planned gift.as opposed to a cash gift.
Magretta said the gift will funda $50,000 endowed scholarshipat Macomb Community Collegeto support accounting students,a $100,000 endowed fund to sup-port professional developmentopportunities for the college’sbusiness faculty and $550,000 tosupport Macomb’s Center for In-novation and Entrepreneurship,a one-stop resource for both stu-dents and community membersfor entrepreneurship educationand training, mentorship forstartups and existing small busi-ness, and access to capital.“We are both excited and hum-
bled by this incredibly generousgift,” saidMCC President James Ja-cobs. “Our donor is not only sig-
naling a strong confidence in thequality of Macomb CommunityCollege’s business and entrepre-neurial programs, but is also in-vesting in the future promise of ourstudents, faculty and community.”The donor was personally im-
pressed by the power of the col-lege’s Center for Innovation andEntrepreneurship after experi-encing its first student pitchcompetition in April 2015 andseeing the impactful, hands-oneducational process the competi-tion provided.An initial field of 50 students
was winnowed down to eight fi-nalists who vied to win up to a$5,000 award to support theirbusiness idea.

Oct. 12 that it will expand its re-search and development centerin the eastern city of Nanjing andwork on autonomous driving,smartphone connectivity, moreefficient powertrains and othertechnologies.Global automakers see China

investment despite an unexpect-edly sharp downturn in salesthis year. In July, General MotorsCo. announced a $5 billion initia-tive with its main Chinese part-ner to develop vehicles to besold in China, Brazil, India andMexico.Auto sales in China declined in
August for a third straightmonth, contracting by 3.4 per-cent from a year earlier to 1.4million vehicles. Ford’s Augustsales declined by 3 percent to79,608, while year-to-date saleswere off 1 percent at just over700,000.Demand has been hurt by con-
gestion in Beijing, Shanghai andother major cities that has madecar ownership less attractiveand by official efforts to curbtraffic and smog by limiting thenumber of new vehicle registra-tions.Ford said features it hopes to
offer in China include introduc-tion next year of SYNC 3, a sys-tem that allows hands-free con-trol of phones, entertainment,climate control and navigation.Ford said it will add a vehicle
test center in Nanjing, expandingits ability to develop products inChina.The company has 10 manufac-
turing facilities in China. TheNanjing Research and Engineer-ing Center employs 1,900 peopleand is one of eight global prod-uct development centers.In April, Ford and a local part-

That’s a lot of cars. GM sold 7.2million vehicles globally in thefirst nine months of 2015.The company posted sales in-
creases in four of its five largestmarkets, with record sales in Chi-na and strong retail sales gains inthe United States, said GMspokesman Jim Cain. Total saleswere down 1 percent, due prima-rily to the company’s previouslyannounced decisions to strategi-cally reduce its presence in cer-tain markets, as well as difficultmarket conditions in SouthAmerica.“Our unwavering focus on the
customer is paying off in ourlargest and most important mar-kets as we execute one success-ful launch after another in theright segments,” said GM Presi-dent Dan Ammann. “At the sametime, we have reacted quickly tochallenging macroeconomic en-vironments in other markets andhave shown the discipline to exitsituations where we see no long-term path to acceptable returns.”Examples of GM’s recent suc-
cess, Cain said, include:• GM truck sales in North
America were up 16 percent inthe first nine months of 2015,driven by a 17 percent increasein Chevrolet truck deliveries inthe United States.• Chevrolet had record
crossover sales in North America
in the same period, up 17 percentyear over year.• In China, crossovers like the
Chevrolet Trax and Buick Envi-sion represented more than 17percent of sales by GM and itsjoint ventures in September, upfrom 6 percent a year ago.• Cadillac had record sales in
China with deliveries rising 12percent to nearly 57,000 units.GM is preparing to launch even
more new trucks and crossoversduring the next several months,including the all-new CadillacXT5, a redesigned Chevrolet Sil-verado and a diesel-poweredChevrolet Colorado for NorthAmerica, and the Baojun 560 inChina.Key car launches include the

European market share and grewsales in 19 countries, includingItaly, Spain, France, the U.K. andGermany.• Buick had record deliveries
in China, with sales up 4 percentto nearly 670,000 units.• Baojun had record sales,
with deliveries rising 236 percentto more than 270,000 units.• GMC’s global sales increased
11 percent, and four of thebrand’s SUVs and pickup trucks –the Yukon, Yukon XL, Sierra andCanyon – have the highest aver-age transaction prices of any ve-hicles in their respective seg-ments in the United States, ac-cording to J.D. Power PIN esti-mates.Cain said that in the third quar-
ter of the year alone, among GM’slargest markets, sales rose in theUnited States, the U.K. and Cana-da. And Opel/Vauxhall, Buick,Cadillac, GMC and Baojun all re-ported higher sales.
Additonally, Chevrolet hadrecord crossover sales in theUnited States, up 24 percent,while Chevrolet U.S. truck salesincreased 16 percent. Deliveriesin South Korea were up 11 per-cent to a record of nearly 43,000units.

DETROIT (AP) – Electric carmaker Tesla Motors is leapfrog-ging competitors with a new au-topilot system that lets carschange lanes by themselves.Like other semi-autonomous
systems already available fromMercedes, Audi and Volvo, Tes-la’s system automatically keepsthe car within its lane and main-tains a certain distance from thecar in front, both at highwayspeeds and on city streets. It canfind a parking spot and parallelpark itself. It also uses camerasand sensors to warn driversabout potential side impacts.But analysts say the lane-
changing feature is an industryfirst. Tesla CEO Elon Musk saidthe system is also unique be-cause it will constantly collectdata from actual drivers and im-

TOKYO (AP) – Toyota, underambitious environmental targets,is aiming to sell hardly any regu-lar gasoline vehicles by 2050 –only hybrids and fuel cells, toradically reduce emissions.The automaker promised to in-
volve governments, affiliatedcompanies and other “stakehold-ers” in its push to reduce aver-age emissions from Toyota carsby 90 percent by about 2050,compared with 2010 levels.Electric cars weren’t part of

According to NADA Used CarGuide, the pace of used vehicledepreciation accelerated consid-erably in September, as whole-sale prices of vehicles up toeight years old fell by 3.4 percentcompared with August.The month’s decline was near-
