The Principal’s Pen February 3, 2017 Dear Warren Community School Parents, Guardians, and Friends – Well, February arrived and with it came snow and cold. The need for hats, mittens, snow pants, and boots went up a notch or two and everyone is reminded to send their kids off in the morning with these essentials (preferably wearing them!) Spirit Week has been a welcome diversion and it has been wonderful seeing everyone joining in on the fun. As I write this, over $350.00 has been raised (while having fun!) and we have more money to count. The financial gain and benefit to St. Jude’s is certainly a positive service to our community; the spirit boost is priceless! Another way of supporting our students and staff has come in the shape of new school board policy, recently passed to “protect the indoor…air quality…” and accommodate the increasing number of people who “…experience unpleasant physical effects from scented products and a growing number of people who suffer more severe reactions to these types of products and chemicals…” [quoted lines are from school board Policy EBBCA: Fragrance Free Environment]. There are several steps that we at WCS can take in recognition of our students and staff who need to learn and work together every day while struggling with scent-related physical symptoms: - We can keep all parts of our school free of scented products to the extent possible. - We can do our best to refrain from wearing perfumes, aftershaves, and other fragrances while spending time in our building. - We can take care to use scent-free products for cleaning clothes (when possible) and our facility (custodial products, etc.) - Anyone who has an acute sensitivity or more severe reactions to a specific fragrance/chemical is encouraged to let Mr. Kangas or me know, so that we can look into making our school a more safe environment for them. If you are interested in the full text of this policy, you are directed to our district web page, where board policies are maintained – look for Policy EBBCA: Fragrance Free Environment. Starting next year, this policy will be included in our WCS Parent/Student Handbook to provide guidance right from the beginning of the year. I hope you keep reading our newsletter for information about what’s happening at WCS as well as announcements of upcoming activities and events. My next Principal’s Pen will talk about how we can ensure the continuation of the great opportunities presently available to our WCS students. Stay Tuned!! Deborah F. Read To ME Challenge at WCS

February 6 to March 2, 2017

Dear Families and Friends,

As part of the Read to ME Challenge, WCS is encouraging you to read to a child, or have a child read to you, for fifteen minutes a day, from February 6 to March 2, 2017. Moms, dads, older siblings, grandparents, babysitters, family friends…reading together strengthens our community as well as our students’ reading skills. After you read together for at least 15 minutes, please fill out one of the paper chain reading slips (coming home separately). Each grade level has its own color. Have each child bring in the completed slips to their classroom teacher. We will link each slip together to form a giant paper chain leading from the main office down to the gymnasium, where we will have our Read Across America Celebration on March 2. We are hoping our students’ families and friends will participate every day in reading together. Watch as our reading chain gets longer and longer throughout the month of February, showing how much reading we are doing together every day! Time reading together is Time well spent!! WCS Staff
