Well, GMC has a concept vehicle that has “hot” treads. The 2018 GMC Sierra 2500HD All Mountain concept, a one-of-a- kind snow-climbing machine, de- buted last week at Vail Mountain. The Sierra All Mountain concept takes GMC’s signature design and “engineering excellence” to new heights, adding tank-like tracks that help it navigate rugged, snow-covered terrain, said GMC spokeswoman Jennie Ecclestone. Built on a GMC Sierra 2500HD Denali 4WD Crew Cab platform, the epitome of GMC’s strength and design, the All Mountain con- cept stands ready to tackle steep slopes and extreme weather con- ditions. It combines the power of the 6.6L turbo-diesel V8 engine and first-class interior appointments of the Sierra 2500HD Denali and adds enhanced capability and features through concept Mat- tracks technology and GMC Accessories. “With GMC’s focus on premium capability and design, we wanted to ensure that this concept took these signature attributes to an entirely new level,” said Carl Zipfel, GMC exterior designer. “The Sierra All Mountain concept Mattracks technology enables the truck to conquer uncharted territory while highlighting pre- mium interior features such as GMC Debuts New ‘All Mountain’ Concept Captain Nemo never had it so good. DETROIT (AP) – Black Fridaydeals and strong consumer con-fidence pushed some auto saleshigher in November despite wan-ing demand for post-hurricanereplacement vehicles. Some analysts initially predict-

ed that November sales woulddrop as post-hurricane salesslowed in Texas and Florida. ButBlack Friday promotions – whichbegan in early November – helpedlure buyers to dealerships.Fiat Chrysler was offering up

to $16,000 off its 300 sedan, while Hyundai was kicking$3,750 off the price of a Santa FeSUV. Car buying site KBB.comsaid automotive credit applica-tions rose 42 percent on BlackFriday compared to other Fri-days in November.Automakers were offering an

average of $3,700 to $3,800 in in-centives per vehicle in Novem-ber. As prices creep up, deals arecreeping up with them, analystssay. The trend will likely contin-ue in 2018, when U.S. sales areexpected to drop and automak-ers will be keen to hold on totheir market share.Sales were buoyed by strong

U.S. consumer confidence, which was at its highest levelsince November 2000, accordingto the Conference Board.Car-buying site Edmunds.com

predicted November sales willrise 3.5 percent over last year to1.4 million vehicles. Here are other details about

November sales:• Sales dropped 4 percent forFiat Chrysler.

• Sales fell 3 percent for Gen-eral Motors Co.

• Sales jumped 7 percent atFord Motor Co. on strong de-mand for trucks and SUVs.

• Toyota sales fell 3 percenteven though the revampedCamry sedan and the RAV4small SUV posted recordNovember numbers. In-creased truck and SUV saleswere offset by steep de-clines in car, with Toyotacars falling nearly 9 percent.

When the Summit White 2018Tahoe RST rolled off the lineat General Motors’ ArlingtonAssembly plant last week, itmarked the 11 millionth vehicle– and more than 2.5 million full-size Chevrolet utilities – pro-duced at the facility since itopened in 1954.“Chevrolet has led the full-size

utility segment in sales for 42consecutive years by focusingon our customers and providinga range of confident, capable andconnected vehicles to move a lotof people and cargo,” said EricStanczak, chief engineer for Full-Size Trucks and SUVs.“Today, we continue that lead-

ership with a complete lineup offull-size utility vehicle options tomeet our customers’ lifestylesand needs, from Tahoe Customto Suburban Premier to the 420-horsepower Tahoe RST.”Arlington Assembly’s mile-

stone underscores Chevrolet’sfull-size utility success story.Seventy-five percent of all full-size utility vehicles sold to retailcustomers in the U.S. are built atArlington Assembly and nearlyone in two full-size utility vehi-cles sold in the U.S. wears theChevrolet bowtie, said GMspokesman Monte Doran. Noother company has such a domi-nant share of any segment in theindustry, he said.To keep up with consumer de-

mand, Doran said Arlington As-sembly’s production line has run

24 hours a day, six days a week, producing one vehicle almostevery 60 seconds since 2015.In addition, Doran said GM

promised a $1.4 billion invest-ment, GM’s largest single-factoryinvestment in the U.S., in Arling-ton Assembly over three yearsbeginning in 2015.Arlington Assembly builds the

full-size Chevrolet Tahoe and

Suburban, GMC Yukon andYukon XL and Cadillac EscaladeSUVs.The first vehicle was built at

the plant in January 1954.Texas will host another major

milestone for Chevy Trucks onDec.16, when the brand will cele-brate the Chevy Trucks Centen-nial with its customers at TexasMotor Speedway.

The first-ever Tahoe RST willbe offered with an exclusive Per-formance Package that includesPerformance Calibrated MagneticRide Control, 6.2L V8 and all-new10-speed automatic transmission.Tahoe RST Performance Pack-

age offers a towing capacity of8,400 pounds and is capable of 0-60 mph acceleration in under 6seconds.

vertible is a supercar in all re-spects,” said Reuss. “Few otherscan challenge the ZR1 convert-ible’s power and speed while of-fering the exhilaration of top-down motoring.”The performance and technol-

ogy introduced on the CorvetteZR1 coupe carry over to the newZR1 convertible, Reuss said. Thestrength of the Corvette’s alu-minum chassis means the onlystructural changes in the con-vertible are accommodations forthe folding top and repositionedsafety belt mounts. The powertop can be operated remotely orwhile driving up to 30 mph.In fact, the curb weight differ-

ence between the ZR1 coupe andconvertible is less than 60pounds, with most of the differ-ence attributed to the folding tophardware.“The ZR1 convertible is a no-

compromise supercar,” saidCorvette Executive Chief Engi-neer Tadge Juechter. “Thanks tothe strong structure, the suspen-sion tuning between coupe andconvertible models is identical, meaning the ZR1 convertible of-fers the same benchmark per-formance, including a top speedof over 200 mph.”The Corvette ZR1’s unique

aero package is central to thecoupe’s 212-mph top speed,

Juechter said. Its standard, stan-chion-mounted Low Wing gener-ates road-holding downforcewith minimal drag, enabling thebenchmark top speed.“This was evident during top-

speed testing at Germany’s Pa-penburg proving ground.”Juechter said.An adjustable High Wing is

part of the new $2,995 ZTK Per-formance Package, which also in-cludes a front splitter with car-bon-fiber end caps, Michelin Pi-lot Sport Cup 2 tires and specificchassis and Magnetic Ride Con-trol tuning. It is designed to help generate

faster lap times through maxi-mum grip in the corners, with upto 950 pounds of downforce,Reuss said. The top speed is lower with

the High Wing but still exceeds200 mph.Complementing the ZR1’s aero

advantage on the way to 212 mphis the thrust generated by the ex-clusive LT5 6.2L supercharged

engine, which is rated at an SAE-certified 755 horsepower and715 lb.-ft. of torque, Reuss said. Aseven-speed manual transmis-sion and a ZR1-first paddle-shifteight-speed automatic transmis-sion are offered with it. Prelimi-nary testing has shown 0-60 mphin under 3.0 seconds and thequarter-mile in the high 10-sec-ond range when the engine isequipped with the eight-speedautomatic.The LT5 features a new, more

efficient intercooled supercharg-er system, along with GM’s firstdual fuel-injection system, whichemploys primary direct injectionand supplemental port injection,Juechter said.Compared to the supercharger

system on the Corvette Z06’s LT4engine, the LT5 employs a larger,2.65-liter supercharger that gen-erates more boost while spinningat a slightly slower speed. Thatreduces heat to help maintain alower air intake temperature foroptimal performance.

The editors of Motor Trendhave named the Alfa RomeoGiulia as its 2018 Car of the Year.“Motor Trend’s judges agreed

that the Alfa Romeo Giulia is thenew ultimate driving machine,”said Ed Loh, Motor Trend editor-in-chief. “Alfa Romeo developeda car that is perhaps the finesthandling sedan on the market.”The magazine’s editors, said

Fiat Chrysler spokesman BerjAlexanian, chose the Giulia be-cause it best represents excep-tional value, superiority in itsclass and impact on the automo-tive scene.“The Motor Trend Car of the

Year award,” said Reid Bigland, head of Alfa Romeo, “acknowl-edges all of the hard work, dedi-cation and passion that went intodeveloping the entire Giulia line-up – including our record-break-ing Giulia Quadrifoglio – whichrevolutionizes the segment andpays tribute to our storied her-itage and racing pedigree.“We are honored to be the first

Italian brand to ever receive thisprestigious award and we’re ex-cited for the future of Alfa Romeohere in North America andabroad.”

Motor Trend’s Car of the Yearprogram is open to any new orsubstantially upgraded 2017model-year vehicles, Alexaniansaid. Rather than being com-pared against one another, con-tending vehicles are first putthrough Motor Trend’s full bat-tery of performance tests tomeasure acceleration, brakingand limit handling. All contenders are then evalu-

ated on three separate coursesat a professional automotive testcenter before finalists are select-ed. Out of its third-largest fieldever, Motor Trend’s judges nar-rowed the field to eight Car ofthe Year finalists, including theAlfa Romeo Giulia. All “Of the Year” contenders

were selected by Motor Trendjudges and evaluated against sixkey criteria: advancement in de-sign, engineering excellence, safety, efficiency, value and per-formance of intended function, said Loh.

“The 2017 Alfa Romeo Giuliabest represents these six key ele-ments, which also characterizewhat consumers most want intheir next vehicle,” he said.Contenders are put through a

grueling battery of tests to deter-mine which vehicles best repre-sent exceptional value, superiori-ty in its class and impact on theautomotive scene, Loh said. The 2018 Car of the Year com-

petition covered more than 7,000miles of driving, including real-world testing with potholes, jagged pavement, steep grades, misaligned railroad crossingsand avoidance maneuvers.Alfa Romeo Giulia models fea-

ture a new, all-aluminum, 2.0-liter, direct-injection turbo en-gine with an eight-speed auto-matic transmission that deliversa class-leading, standard 280horsepower and 306 lb.-ft. oftorque, allowing it to launchfrom 0-60 mph in 5.1 seconds,and achieve a top speed of 149mph.As the lineup’s “halo” model,

the Giulia Quadrifoglio highlightsAlfa Romeo’s performance andmotorsport knowhow with itsbest-in-class 505 horsepower, 0-60 miles per hour in 3.8 secondsand a record-setting 7:32 lap timearound the legendary Nürbur-gring – fastest ever by a four-door production sedan, saidAlexanian.

two-speed transfer case with full-time four-wheel drive and a2.72:1 low-range gear ratio that isavailable on Sahara models, Man-ley said. This new Selec-Trac full-time two-speed transfer case isintuitive and allows the driver toset it and forget it, while con-stantly sending power to thefront and rear wheels. The Command-Trac 4x4 sys-

tem features a two-speed trans-fer case with a 2.72:1 low-rangegear ratio, and next-generationsolid Dana front and rear axleswith a 3.45 rear axle ratio.The 2018 Jeep Wrangler builds

on a sculptural design aestheticthat is immediately recognizablewith its traditional Jeep designcues, Manley said. Wrangler’snew exterior design is bold andrugged with a wide stance andlowered beltline with larger win-dows for better outward visibili-ty, especially out on the trails. The Jeep design team gave the

famous seven-slot grille an up-dated look that now shows bothof the outer grille slats intersect-

ing with the headlights, payinghomage to the Jeep CJ, Manleysaid. The top of the keystone-shaped grille has been gentlyswept back for improved aerody-namics.The windshield’s rake has

been optimized for improvedaerodynamics and features a newfour bolt design at the top of thewindshield’s frame to allow thewindshield to fold down quicklyand easily, Manley said. A newheader bar now connects the A-pillars and stays in place evenwhen the windshield is foldeddown. This allows the rearviewmirror to remain in place evenwith the windshield folded. The new 2018 Jeep Wrangler’s

interior combines authenticstyling, versatility, comfort andintuitive feature use. Precisioncraftsmanship and high-qualitymaterials are found throughoutthe cabin, Manley said.Jeep functionality and versatil-

ity are celebrated in the centerconsole and distinguished withmetal-plated accents. A re-designed center console housesthe gear shift selection, transfer

case and parking brake. Realbolts featured on the shifter, grabhandles and frame the infotain-ment screen highlight genuineconstruction methods.A push-button starter, featur-

ing a weatherproof surround, makes its debut on the 2018Wrangler and is easily locatedwithin the driver’s reach. Two USB ports up front and

two in reach of occupants in theback seat connect to the mediacenter. Standard 12-volt accesso-ry outlets are located throughoutthe new Wrangler and a 115-voltAC outlet is available to powerselect three-pronged home elec-tronics.Clever storage solutions are

found throughout the 2018 Wran-gler, Manley said, includingdurable mesh pockets that ex-tend the entire length of thedoors and numerous phone stor-age areas. The 2018 Jeep Wrangler re-

ceives a multitude of improve-ments to optimize ride, handlingand sound characteristics, whilereducing weight and improvingfuel economy, Manley said.

Magazine editors call 2017 Giulia “the new ultimate driving machine.”

Chevrolet is celebrating beingin the pickup truck market for100 years and one of the thingsbeing celebrated is torque. Why? Because torque is power.

More specifically, it’s the twistingforce an engine generates, andfor 100 years Chevy Trucks haveoffered the torque that cus-tomers of 85 million trucks haverelied on for hauling cargo andpulling trailers, on and off theclock.“Chevrolet Trucks have pulled

their weight for a century,” saidDan Nicholson, vice president,Global Propulsion Systems. “No-body does torque like Chevroletand generations have counted onour trucks to get the job doneconfidently.”Chevy Trucks have come a

long way from the original 1918One-Ton model, which featured a2.8L four-cylinder engine with anestimated 45 lb.-ft. of torque. Itsclosest contemporary engine isthe standard 2.5L four-cylinderengine in the Colorado, which israted at 191 lb.-ft. of torque, or 76lb.-ft. per liter – a 480 percent in-crease over the 1918 engine. At the far end of the spectrum

is the contemporary Silverado3500HD one-ton truck, with theavailable Duramax 6.6L turbo-diesel V8. Its 910 lb.-ft. of torqueequates to an incredible 138 lb.-ft. per liter, for great traileringconfidence even on toughgrades.“Technological advances such

as direct injection and tur-bocharging help contemporaryChevy Truck engines delivermore torque per liter of displace-ment than ever,” says Nicholson.“That means customers can domore and haul more than ever.”The increase in Chevy Truck

capability has been driven overthe decades by the enduring per-formance of several landmark en-gine families sharing an elegant,

overhead-valve architecture thatcontributes to signature low-rpmtorque production, reduced com-plexity and compact packaging. As the brand celebrate 100

years of trucks, here’s anoverview of the most significantmilestones in Chevrolet torque. In 1929, Chevy offered the first

“Stovebolt Six,” which was theautomaker’s first overhead-valveinline-six engine that brought bigtorque to the masses.Displacing 194 cubic inches

(3.2L), its all-new design helpedgenerate strong torque at lowrpm: approximately 120 lb.-ft. atonly 800 rpm. That allowedChevrolet to increase its work-truck load rating from 1 ton to 1.5tons.The Stovebolt nickname was

based on external fasteners thatresembled the bolts on wood-burning stoves, but it quickly be-came synonymous with the en-gine’s durability.Several generations of Chevro-

let’s overhead-valve straight-sixengine were developed from theoriginal design and served inChevy Trucks through the late1980s.In 1955, Chevrolet’s first Small

Block V8 was introduced. Its rev-olutionary overhead-valve V-8engine – later to be dubbed theSmall Block – was offered inthe 1955 “second series” truck

lineup. That original 265-cubic-inch (4.3L) engine produced 238lb.-ft. of torque at only 2,000 rpmand evolved into one of the in-dustry’s most enduring enginearchitectures.About a decade after the

Small Block was introduced,Chevy’s Big Block engine family –also an overhead-valve design –debuted, elevating capability toan unprecedented level for gas-powered trucks. The Small Block is currently in

its fifth generation in 2018 ChevyTrucks, while the original SmallBlock and Big Block families liveon as performance crate engines. In 1987, technology helped

build torque and increaseefficiency.Until the early ’70s, increased

displacement and higher com-pression were easy ways to buildmore horsepower and torque. That changed with industry man-dates that dramatically affectedtraditional power-building tech-niques.Chevrolet traded high com-

pression for high technology, de-veloping electronic fuel injectionthat helped restore the torque ofprevious years with greater effi-ciency. Torque in the Small Blockengine returned to 300 lb.-ft. in1987 and got another 10 percentincrease a few years later, withthe 5.7L Vortec Small Block.
