In the Lions DenThe big news thismonth is that afterrunning themonthly Sundaymarkets for 13years, we have

decided to hand the project over tothe Waroona Action Group. Their 3principle members asked to attendour October meeting and made theformal request to take over the projectfrom the Lions and the majority of ourmembers voted to let it go. Thismeans that Waroona Action Group

and not the Lions will still channel themoney created, back into othercommunity projects. Every so often, aLions project does come to an endand we develop something new, which we will now seriously thinkabout, as the markets generated$5000 a year for us to put into thecommunity and we need to find newways now of generating that income. We will still have a presence at themarkets with our BBQ trailer andwhen it is not being used elsewhere, the Lions train, so you’ll still be able tobuy one of our delicious bacon andegg sandwiches, sausage sizzles orburgers and donate to us, that way.We wish Patrick, Bev and Jo everysuccess with the future developmentof the markets. Talking of the

markets, we had a greathelper on the trailer thismonth, in the form of LorenaRios, an Omega LEO, allthe way from the town ofSalta in Northern Argentina, who is in Perth on a oneyear working visa. Her clubhas 20 members and doesa lot of good work collectingdiscarded food and handingout to the poor, amongst

lots of other things. She was put intouch with myself, by the LEOs headoffice in Melbourne and she stayedwith wife Linda and myself for 2 nights

and attended the LEO meeting on thenext day. We’ll probably be taking on2 big projects in the New Year, arevamp of the Lake Navarinorecreation areas, in conjunction withthe Water Corporation and somemore improvements at DrakesbrookWeir, in conjunction with the Friendsof Drakesbrook Weir, led by formerLion, Keven Kerrison. The Weir ofcourse, was originally a WaroonaLions project for 30 years from 1969to 1999 and we spent a total of$95,000 on it. 2020 is going to beanother busy year for the WaroonaLions Club.We now prepare for Christmas andthe Christmas raffle, letters to Santa, our Lions “Thank A Volunteer”Christmas party and the 5th WaroonaCommunity Christmas Gala Night onFriday 13th December FINALLY,DON’T FORGET, WE ARE ALWAYSLOOKING FOR NEW MEMBERSFOR THE LIONS. OVER THE RAINBOWMooriel’s latest cowture is the creativegenius of Mandy Collinson, “TheFisherman’s Daughter” on Facebookand Instagram. The outfit is madewith used fishing and cray ropes andwas an unexpected challenge for thetalented weaving artist who hails fromJurien and now lives in Harvey. Thenew look took a marathon 11 hoursand an additional five or six tocapture, produce, edit and release thesocial media content. The plan to“rainbow” Mooriel was hatched duringlast year’s quilting exhibition, AHanging on the Highway, whenMandy dropped in to get some shotsof her gorgeous woven baskets withthe beautiful quilts. The combinationwas a match made in heaven and theevent was given some fabulouspublicity on Insta and Facebook byHarvey Waroona Reporter and TheFisherman’s Daughter, amongstothers. The timing of the roping was aperfect fit with Peel Open Studios.Mooriel will stay dressed in the ropesuntil mid-December. Once the ropesare removed Mandy will turn them intotwo or three stunning pieces that willthen be sold or raffled to raise fundsfor Waroona Visitor Centre’s 2019/20fundraising recipient, St JohnAmbulance, Waroona Sub-Branch.Soon after Mooriel headed back to the

Waroona Welcomes a New CEO - Dean Unsworth

I have had the privilege to be the CEO of the Shire of Waroona since midSeptember in a joint CEO role in partnership with the Shire of Murray, whereI have held that position for 12 years. This is quite unique in WA but bothCouncils have the belief and commitment to work together for the greater good,to share resources and ideas, develop economies of scale and in turn bothbe stronger for it.My previous local government roles have been as CEO, Shire of Gnowangerup(2005-2007); Deputy CEO Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes (2002-2005) andSenior Finance Officer, City of Bunbury (2000-2002). I have not always beenin local government however, having had 14 years in the broadcasting mediain Tasmania and NSW, Accountant with Bird-Cameron in Bunbury andMarketing Manager of the Busselton and Margaret River Tourism Association.I was born in Tasmania and moved to Western Australia in 1997 and have notregretted one day of it. W.A. and the Shire of Waroona have much to offer, including an enviable lifestyle, something that must be protected. It is a great experience servicing the community. Being involved in localgovernment has taught me one thing, that while local government has a bigrole to play in a community, without the support, input and pro-activity of thecommunity, the local government cannot achieve much at all. However, bybeing a facilitator of projects, ideas and planning, with the community, a greatdeal can be achieved.I am very keen to ensure the Shire is approachable, is listening to the

community, is communicating effectively and is looking for positive outcomes at every opportunity, whether it bein a broad sense and for individuals.Over the next few months, significant planning will continue to ensure that the Shire has a strategic plan and qualitybusiness plans for projects developed, on which it can focus its energy.I thank those I have met in the first 2 months for such a warm welcome. I am hoping to meet many more peopleover the coming months and listening to the ideas for the future and of course, ways in which the Shire cancontinually improve its service. Wishing you all a safe and happy Christmas.

Guard your BBQs, monitor your pet’s foodand check the insects you scoop from thepool! European wasps, we are looking foryou! They look like wasps but don’t flywith dangling legs. Instead, they fly morelike bees. They are black and yellow likea paper wasp, but with completely blackantennae (feelers) and a nest 10x thesize. You won’t find it under the fencecapping though, these pests prefer to hidetheir nests underground, just beneath thesurface. The nest will contain thousands ofwasps and the entrance can be as smallas a 20 cent coin. They’re annoying likeflies and they like the foods and drinksthat we do, even your pet’s food isn’t safe– but swat one and you’ll discover theysting repeatedly. Accidentally swallowone that has crawled into your drink, ordisturb their nest or step on it, and you willbe seeking urgent medical attention! This pest has threatened to establish inWA since six nests were found and

Widelyestablished across most of southernAustralia, these ‘cane toads of the South’hitchhike their way into WA each year, andthis is the 43rd year spent competing in asophisticated game of ‘Hide and Seek’against this highly adaptable anddangerous pest. The summer and autumnmonths present the only window ofopportunity we have to detect, locate anderadicate European wasp nests from yourhomes, parks and bushland reserves. Ifnot found by May, nests release hundredsof fertile queens who can start nests oftheir own, and the population can explode. If this happens, these pests will be here tostay. This year we are heavily focused onthe Perth hills (Darling Scarp) where nestsare particularly difficult to detect and locate, but European wasps can turn upanywhere, so everyone must keep watch.Join the hunt and LOOK for the

The Power of the BlessingThere is power in the blessing of ‘the gift that keeps on

There is power inthe blessing of‘Jesus - the reasonfor the season!’Angels, bells,

Christmas trees, stars, gifts, holly, wreaths, candles, candycane and Santas, are allsynonymous with Christmas forbelievers and unbelievers alike andin each, there is a meaning whichpoints to Jesus.Angels proclaimed the ‘good news’ ofthe birth of the Saviour of the world, singing ‘Glory to God in the highest’when Jesus was born. In olden daysbells would ring out to guide lostsheep back to the sheepfold. Todaythe Christmas bells signify that wehave a ‘Good Shepherd’ Who caresfor the ‘lost sheep’ who havewandered away from Him. We are allprecious in His sight. He loves usand wants to bring everyone into HIS‘flock’ so that He can care for us andhelp us. The star on top of the treerepresents the star of Bethlehem thatshone brightly on the night that Jesuswas born. It also reminds us thatJesus is ‘the bright and shining star’and a shining hope to all mankind. The traditional Christmas tree is anevergreen, reminding us of theeverlasting hope we have of eternallife in Christ Jesus. The highest pointof the tree points to Heaven andreminds us always to look to God inall things. The gifts around the tree remind usof God’s precious ‘love gift’ to theworld – Jesus - His only begottenSon Who came to rescue us from thepenalty of sin and give to us the giftof Salvation - forgiveness of sin,

represents the Name of Jesus, whocame to earth as our Saviour torescue us. He is ‘the Good Shepherd’so the shape of the candy alsorepresents the shepherd’s crook, used to reach down to rescue sheepthat had gone astray and fallen intoditches. The candy maker stained thepure white cane with red stripes toremind us of the stripes on Jesus’back when He was lashed with a whipthirty nine times. The large red stripewas for the blood that was shed byChrist on the cross so that we couldhave the promise of eternal life. Jesusexplains why He was born and cameto earth – ‘... the Son of Man cameto seek and save the lost’ (Luke19:10).He said ‘I have come into the worldas light, so that whoever believesin Me may not remain in darkness. If anyone hears My words and doesnot keep them, I do not judge him;for I did not come to judge theworld but to save the world. Theone who rejects Me and does notreceive My words has a judge; theword that I have spoken will judgehim on the last day’ (John 12:44-48).May the symbols of Christmas serveto remind us to thankfully celebrateHis birth and understand ‘the power ofthe blessing of Jesus – the reason forthe season!’Be blessed to be ablessing, Cheryl

reconciliation with God and thepromise of eternal life. The holly plantwith its thorny leaves representsimmortality and the crown of thornsworn by Jesus as He went to die onthe Cross. The red berries representHis blood that was shed for us to payfor our sins. The circular Christmaswreath is like ‘the circle of God’s love’which is never ending – it has nobeginning and no end. The evergreenfoliage of the wreath is symbolic ofGod’s everlasting love and eternal life.Although ‘Santa’ (loosely based onSaint Nicholas), is not embraced bymany believers, we can neverthelessrecognise the love shown in the storyof Saint Nicholas, who it was said, went from home to home, giving gifts, celebrating our Saviour’s birth andbringing love and good will toeveryone - as did Jesus.Christmas candles and lights remindus that Jesus is ‘the Light of the world’Who came to rescue us from eternaldarkness - the consequence of our sinand unbelief in Him. Jesus is ‘theLight of the world’ Who shows us theway to eternal life. The origin of thewhite candy cane with its red stripesis interesting. Many years ago, acandy maker wanted to make a candyat Christmas time that would serve asa witness to his Christian faith andalso incorporate the symbols of Jesus’birth, ministry and death. He beganwith a stick of pure white candy in theshape of a ‘J,’ symbolizing the virginbirth and Jesus’ pure, sinless nature. The candy was hard symbolizing ‘thesolid Rock’ Who is Jesus, thefoundation of the Church. Thefirmness of the candy represents ‘thefirm promises of God.’ The ‘J’ shape

Waroona Library - Harry Bosch and LAPD DetectiveRenée Ballard come together againon the murder case that obsessedBosch’s mentor, the man whotrained him to be a homicide detec-tive. Back when Harry Bosch was justa rookie homicide detective, he had aninspiring mentor who taught him to takethe work personally and light the fire ofrelentlessness for every case. Now thatmentor, John Jack Thompson, is dead, but after his funeral his widow handsBosch a murder book that Thompsontook with him when he left the LAPD 20years before — the unsolved killing of atroubled young man in an alley used fordrug deals.Bosch brings the murder book toRenée Ballard and asks her to help himfind what about the case lit Thompson’sfire all those years ago. That will betheir starting point. The bond between Bosch and Ballardtightens as they become a formidableinvestigation team. And they soon ar-rive at a worrying question: Did Thomp-son steal the murder book to work thecase in retirement, or to make sure itnever got solved?

I cannot believe Spring 2019 is almostbehind us and it is six weeks since theWaroona Show, with the finalCommittee Meeting tonight to roundoff the year. I have just re-commenced duties in ChookyardHotel and a sincere thank you to mywife of 41 years Maryann for steppingup to the plate for the past five weeks.Gretel the wonder bantam who tookme out on the Friday before WaroonaShow has just hatched another 5bantam chicks to prove what a greatMum she is. A Belgian DuccleMillefleur has hatched six bantamchicks 10 days ago and the fivechicks fostered by the Gold LaceBantam pullet has left them to fend forthemselves. We also have a cluckyBantam “Snowhite” sitting on a batchof eggs and a Gold Lace Pullet whowon 1st place in her class section atWaroona Show and a BlackWyandotte sitting as well. Hopefullynot too many more with summer justaround the corner. I am pleasantlysurprised that I keep receiving repeatorders for fertile eggs and yesterdayat Mundijong Markets received anorder for another Belgian DuccleMillefeur dozen from a client inHarvey. Unfortunately she is only thesole pullet survivor when a Hawkdevoured all her other batch lastseason from Chookyard Hotelrecently. Sold 4.5 dozen mixed eggsto a client in Kwinana who hatchesthem in an incubator and she enjoys ahigh fertility rate of over 90% from oureggs. It was the first time in nearly 3months since I ventured to MundijongMarkets and a great social day outplus a chance to obtain that secretbargain. Fell in love with a lavenderAraucana hen and have duly namedher Edith after my late mother Joan’smiddle name to join the Araucanagirls at Chookyard Hotel. She is very friendly and must havebeen hand raised and even laid anegg on the trip home. Purchased atransport cage and a nice carry clothcase which I plan to house Snowwhitethe Belgian Danver hen to hatch herchicks in. Currently she is in a smallnesting area on the side of thenursery and has not moved an inchsince she became broody, with foodand water taking up the rest of thespace in the nesting area. You alwaysmeet lots of locals at Mundijong and

yesterday was no exception greetingPaddy Dawe from North Dandalup, old family friends of my late parentsJoan and Wally. Paddy noticed I wasmissing in action at Waroona Showand witnessed the 14 show winningbirds of Chookyard Hotel in thepoultry pavilion presented by mydaughter Caitlin Rose. He wasforeman for Clover Meats in the earlydays and also on the committee ofWaroona Football Club with Dadwhose duty was Treasurer. Always asmall world and love renewinghistorical moments with formerWaroona local identities. The girlshave been laying well and the yokesof the free range eggs have beenbright and yellow. Continue tomaintain my special mixture toppedup with seaweed kelp, red powderand garlic granules which assistsdigestion and worming. Egg sales ordonations from CYH are always wellreceived and winning most points inthe egg section at Waroona Showwas an unexpected bonus. Theblue/green eggs of Araucana andcream Legbar continue to fascinatepeople and the size of the Legbar eggfrom only a Soft Feather Light Breedbird is surprising. Continue to bait therat population and can tell when thecrows have been having a free proteinfeed when egg production issignificantly lower. My dream one dayis to put a ceiling on the two mainyards and keep the Ibis and Cockieson the other side of the wire.Chookyard Hotel hygiene willautomatically further improve. The“Mark Winter “ project of a newconcrete floor for another BelgianDuccle breeding programmecontinues to work a treat andcompleted a costing from WaroonaHardware for just under $600 formaterials and labour was great value.A bonus was he fixed a toilet seatplumbing headache whilst we waitedfor the wet concrete to cure and set.Thank you Mark and you cannot beatlocal tradesmen. The house fire of 13months ago is testament to that andMark Winter now has shares in a newbathroom, kitchen renovation and theBelgian Duccle 4 Star Ensuite at No.26. He can now concentrate asProject Manager to the WaroonaAgricultural Society Meeting roomextensions and he is a valuedvolunteer of our local community. Withthe summer months just around thecorner, will continue to keep theresidents of Chookyard Hotelrefreshed with cool clean water, asplash of water melon and topped up

withchoppedsilverbeetleaves andwhite stem.Only sixweeks to gotillChristmas and trust 2020 will be injuryfree and able to take care of theresidents of Chookyard Hotel 24/7.Best wishes for the festive season, have a Happy and Safe Christmasand a prosperous 2020. ChookyardFarmer Ken

Bushfires equals fake charity scams

It’s been more than 10 years sinceWestern Australia’s tenancy lawswere reviewed and times havecertainly changed. So, ConsumerProtection is set to reviewthe Residential Tenancies Act1987 and we are going to want tohear from you. The high cost ofowning a home means more people inWA are renting. Meanwhile peoplewith investment properties might notwant to sell in the current market, resulting in landlords seeking tenantswho are looking for long term stabletenancy arrangements. We want ourtenancy laws to not only meet today’sneeds but also those of the future.Although a rental property belongs to

Review of WA tenancy laws coming soona landlord, to a tenant it is their home andwe need to strike a balance between longterm investment returns and stabletenancy arrangements and what shouldthis look like from both sides of theequation. In the coming months we willpublish a discussion paper to ask for yourexperiences and feedback on key issuesincluding:1. improving security oftenure for tenants; 2. shouldtermination of a tenancy requirereasons and do away with “nogrounds” terminations; 3. disclosureof important information before atenancy begins; 4. what are theminimum standards for rentalproperties; 5. tenant liability fordamage – what is fair wear and tear; 6.bonds, changes in rent and other

charges; 7. making a rentalproperty a home, including theright to keep pets and make minormodifications; and 8. regulation ofboarding, lodging and room-by-room rentals.Gathering your thoughts on the WAtenancy laws will help us to makelasting improvements that work forboth tenants and landlords. We'll post updates, including thediscussion paper, on the ConsumerProtection website - if you use theshort linkcommerce.wa.gov.au/rentingtools youcan easily find the dedicated ‘tenancylaws review’ web page, to save toyour favourites.

Consumer Protection has beenreporting for a long time on the dangersof quad bikes including the fatalitiesand injuries sustained by operators. We are pleased to announce that theConsumer Goods (Quad Bikes) SafetyStandard 2019 was published in theGovernment Gazette on 22 October2019.The safety standard will reduce therisk of injury or fatality to consumersresulting from quad bikes rolling over, and will provide consumers withinformation about the relative stabilityof different quad bike models. A quadbike is defined as an off-roadmechanical vehicle which travels onfour wheels, with a seat designed tobe straddled by the operator andhandlebars for steering control. Therehave been at least 128 fatalities from2011 to 2018. Even though quad

Seeing the recent bushfires is horrifyingfor most of us and we just want to helpsomehow. But unfortunately scammerssee it as an opportunity to impersonatecharities, or create fake charities. Thiscan happen online, via social media orwebsite pop-ups, or in person, such asat your front door or on the street. It’sdoubly cruel because not only does itcon the donor out of their money, it alsodenies the true cause much-neededfunds for those truly affected. Preventcharity donations from ending up in thewrong hands by avoiding uninvitedapproaches altogether. Instead, approach your chosen charity directly, through contact details you are 100%sure of, to make a donation. If you

happen to respond to an out-of-the-blueemail, phone call or face-to-face request, triple check it’s the real deal. Onlinescammers might create a copycat versionof a well-known charity website, so youneed to be absolutely sure the url/webaddress you are using, is the right one.Ask door-to-door collectors for their ID andif in doubt call the charity via the numberlisted on their official website to check ifthe person truly represents them. Anycharitable fundraising in WA should onlyhappen with the appropriate licence orpermit from Consumer Protection – seeour licensed charities register atwww.consumerprotection.wa.gov.au Thelicensing system is about preventingmisuse of funds and means the charity’s

finances are audited. We know it canbe impractical to obtain a licence forshort-term fundraising such as a one-off event, so in those circumstancesyou can collect under the authority ofan existing licensed charity with theirpermission. Feel free to call ourCharities Branch for information aboutthat on 6552 9364 or for Countrycallers: 1300 304 074. bikes are responsible for more fatalitiesthan motorcycles and more injuries thantractors on rural properties, until now, quad bikes have not been subject to asafety standard. The estimated cost tothe Australian economy of quad bikefatalities and injuries is at least $204million per year. Based on currentevidence, the single highest cause offatalities involves general use quad bikesrolling over sideways, to the left or rightand pinning the operator, causing crushinjuries or asphyxiation. While notaddressed by the safety standard, important things to do to prevent seriousinjury and death are to: prohibit children from riding onadult-sized quad bikes; not allow passengers to ride onsingle-person quad bikes; and insist that all people riding shouldwear helmets.

RequirementsThe safety standard requires that allnew and imported quad bikes meetUS and European standards, have alabel warning of the rollover risksclearly displayed, include informationon the rollover risk in the owner’smanual and be tested for stability.Further information on quad bikesafety, in the form of brochures, posters and publications, is availableon the Consumer Protection websiteatwww.commerce.wa.gov.au/consumer-protection/quad-bikes. For details onthe legislation, see the AustralianCompetition and ConsumerCommission (ACCC) website atwww.productsafety.gov.au/standards/quad-bikes.
