What can cause a mental disorder?

Chapter 9 Lesson 1 Mental Disorder is an illness of the mind that can affect

the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, of a person.

It is estimated that 20% of the US population (54 million) are affected by some type of mental disorder.

What is a stigma?

A stigma is a negative label or mark of shame.

40% of the homeless in the US have some type of mental disorder.

Functional disorder – mainly caused by disturbing events in childhood

Anxiety Disorder - a condition in which real or imagined fears are difficult to control

Phobia – a strong and irrational fear of something specific

Ex. Such as dogs, places, heights,etc.

Post traumatic stress disorder – a condition that may develop after exposure to a terrifying event that threatened or caused physical harm

Ex. Car accident,

Being in the military

Mood disorders – an illness often with an organic cause that involves mood extremes that interfere with everyday living

Clinical depression – depression that doesn’t go away

Bipolar disorder – extreme mood changes filled with highs and lows

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) – a disorder where the person is trapped in a pattern of repeated thoughts or behavior

Panic Disorder – unexplained feelings of terror

Eating Disorders – factors that lead to an obsession with body image which can lead to anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating.

Conduct disorder – a pattern of behavior in which the rights of others are violated

Ex. Theft, lying, agression

Schizophrenia – a mental disorder where the person loses control of what is reality.

Personality Disorder – a individual with unique traits or behavior patterns

Suicide Prevention

Alienation – feeling isolated and separated from everyone else

• Suicide – the act of intentionally taking one’s own life.

Every 13.7 minutes someone in the United States dies by suicide.

Nearly 1,000,000 people make a suicide attempt every year.

90% of people who die by suicide have a diagnosable and treatable psychiatric disorder at the time of their death.

Most people with mental illness do not die by suicide.

Cluster Suicides - a series of suicides occurring within a short period of time and involving several people in the same school or community

Getting Help

When should someone get help for either an emotional problem or mental disorder?

When the person feels trapped with no way out

Their feelings affect your sleep, eating habits, school work, job, relationships, etc.

Their family or friends express concern

Their becoming involved with alcohol or other drugs

Their becoming aggressive or violent

What does the dash on a tombstone mean or symbolize?

The Dash by Linda Ellis I read of a man who stood to speak

at the funeral of a friend.He referred to the dates on her tombstone, from the beginning…to the end.

He noted that first came the date of her birth and spoke of the following date with tears,but he said what mattered most of allwas the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the timethat she spent alive on earth.And now only those who loved herknow what that little line is worth.

For it matters not, how much we own,the cars…the house…the cash.What matters is how we live and loveand how we spend our dash.

So, think about this long and hard.Are there things you’d like to change?

• For you never know how much time is left that can still be rearranged.

• If we could just slow down enoughto consider what’s true and realand always try to understandthe way other people feel.

• And be less quick to angerand show appreciation moreand love the people in our liveslike we’ve never loved before. 

• If we treat each other with respectand more often wear a smile,remembering that this special dashmight only last a little while.

• So, when your eulogy is being read,with your life’s actions to rehash…would you be proud of the things they say about how you spent YOUR dash?
