Goal! •SWBAT evaluate the effectiveness of

research methods.

•How do sociologist conduct research?

Page 5: Warm Up! Mr. Sells has given you a marshmallow- if you do not eat it and are silent and wait, you will…

Observation? •Research observers group or people in

their natural habitat. •2 types of Observation

▫Participant Observation: Researcher is directly involved.

▫Detached Observation: Researcher observes from a distance, asking questions etc. They do not become part of the group

Experiment vs. Observation?? •Experiments use the research method,

AND are in highly controlled conditions. (in the researchers space.)

•Asch, Social Experiment

HW: Conduct an observation. •Take down at least a page of notes for 10-

Surveys!? A survey is a research method in which subjects

respond to a series of statements or questions in a questionnaire or an interview..-Surveys are directed at populations, the

people who are the focus of research.

Ex: Researchers who solicited responses to an online survey of almost 100,000 people from around the world, including 23,000 in the USA, sought to understand what was “normal” They found:

-48% of men and 28% of women report to having fallen in love at first sight.

-43% of men and 33% of women say they are keeping a major secret from their partner.

Interviews!? •Interviews can be a type of survey. The researchers

guide the questions. 2 types of interviews: 1. Unstructured: loose set of questions, or only one

question to allow interview to go in many directions1. Try it out each member will have 3 min. to do a mini

interview attempting to understand a students family background.

2. Semi-structured interviews: Topics/ Questions are developed to initiate discussion.

1. Try it out each member will have 3 min. to do a mini interview attempting to understand a students family background. First: Write 3 questions.

Quantitative vs. Qualitative •Quantitative…Quant… Quantity=

numbers based! Any survey that analyzes numbers, any time an interview counts or calculates the # of times something was mentioned etc.

•Qualitative: This data is in the form of observations and descriptions.

Quick Write: What research method is the most effective? •Argue which of the research types is the

best.
