Warm Up March 13th, 2014

1) Would you say a parasite is more like a bacterium or a virus and why?

2) Explain what bacteriophages attack and how they reproduce.

3) Write down what you know about fungi. Is a fungus more like a plant cell or an animal cell and explain your reasoning.

90% 100%

• Make sure your bacteriophage is standing on your desk!

Fungus (Fungi)*- Eukaryotic, non-photosynthetic

organisms (mostly multicellular)- Fungi can reproduce sexually and

asexually (spores).- Sometimes attack living plants and

animals, causing disease.- Mold spores are released by fungi and

cause allergic reactions in humans.

So are there fungi cells? (yes)Plant (cellulose) and Fungi (chitin) cells both share cell walls (usually).

Plant and Fungi cells both cannot move of their own accord.

Animal and Fungi cells consume other things to gain their nutrition (non-photosynthesis)

Fungi cells absorb their nutrients (animals ingest, plants photosynthesize)

Athletes Foot- Fungal infection in feet that is usually

transmitted in moist, communal areas. Also known as ringworm of the foot.

Athletes Foot

Valley Fever- Fungal infection in the southwestern United

States in dry, low rainfall areas, such as Arizona.

- Can lead to hospitalization if left alone, cannot get more than once.

Valley Fever - Coccidioidomycosis

Pneumocystis pneumonia- Opportunistic and severe infection in people

with weakened immune systems (HIV/AIDS).- Attacks the lungs like other types of

pneumonia.

Pneumocystis pneumonia

Parasites*- An organism that feeds off

another organism, called a host.- Parasites are so effective

because they are adapted and naturally selected to exploit a host.

- They can cause an increase in the spread of diseases.

African Sleeping Sickness- Microscopic parasite transmitted by the

tsetse fly, which is native to Africa.- Curable if treated, fatal if not…

African Sleeping Sickness

Malaria- Develops in the salivary glands of a

mosquito, which when it bites you, then injects you with the parasite sporozoites.

- Destroys red blood cells, causes flu-like symptoms, high fever

Malaria

River Blindness - Onchocerciasis- Can be caused by multiple bites from the

blackfly. This fly tends to live and breed near fast flowing rivers. Parasite lives and feeds on your eyes.

- Second highest in blindness worldwide that is caused by a disease (after trachoma).

River Blindness - Onchocerciasis
