of many turn of the century problems. - Moral Reformers sought to promote Moral

Improvements:

• End Prostitution• End Gambling• End Drunkenness• Educate Children• Americanize and/or

Restrict Entry of Immigrants

• The Evils of Alcohol

Carrie Nation – “Saloon Smasher”

• Extremely religious upbringing

• Married a drinker (against parents wishes) who died when their daughter was an infant

• Second marriage also unsuccessful - divorced

Carrie Nation – “Saloon Hatcher”

• Used a hatchet to meet goals of temperance movement:

1. destroy property

2. convert saloon keepers

• It’s February 1918 and your temperance organization is trying to rally support so that Delaware will ratify the 18th Amendment.

• Your group must make a poster showing your support for temperance.

• The poster should convince me to support the temperance movement so it should represent views that many temperance supporters had.
