Finding InterceptsWriting Equations in Slope-Intercept Form

Find x- and y-intercepts

Write a linear equation in slope-intercept form.

Objectives

Vocabulary

y-interceptx-intercept

The y-intercept is the y-coordinate of the point where the graph intersects the y-axis. The x-coordinate of this point is always 0.

The x-intercept is the x-coordinate of the point where the graph intersects the x-axis. The y-coordinate of this point is always 0.

Finding Intercepts

Find the x- and y-intercepts.

The graph intersects the y-axis at (0, 1).

The y-intercept is 1.

The graph intersects the x-axis at (–2, 0).

The x-intercept is –2.

Try This!

Find the x- and y-intercepts.

The graph intersects the y-axis at (0, 3).

The y-intercept is 3.

The graph intersects the x-axis at (–2, 0).

The x-intercept is –2.

Any linear equation can be written in slope-intercept form by solving for y and simplifying. In this form, you can immediately see the slope and y-intercept. Also, you can quickly graph a line when the equation is written in slope-intercept form.

Writing linear Equations in Slope-Intercept Form

Write the equation that describes the line in slope-intercept form.

slope = ; y-intercept = 4

y = mx + b

y = x + 4

Substitute the given values for m and b.

Simply if necessary.

slope = –9; y-intercept =

y = mx + b Substitute the given values for m and b.

Simply if necessary.

Writing linear Equations in Slope-Intercept Form

Write the equation that describes the line in slope-intercept form.

y = –9x +

slope = 3; y-intercept =

y = mx + b Substitute the given values for m and b.

Simply if necessary.

Writing linear Equations in Slope-Intercept Form

Write the equation that describes the line in slope-intercept form.

y = mx + b Substitute the given values for m and b.

Simply if necessary.

Writing linear Equations in Slope-Intercept Form

Write the equation that describes the line in slope-intercept form.

Find the slope (m) & y-intercept (b)m = = -3;b = 5 31

y = -3x + 5

y = mx + bSubstitute the given values for m and b.

Simply if necessary.

Writing linear Equations in Slope-Intercept Form

Write the equation that describes the line in slope-intercept form.

You have seen that you can graph a line if you know two points on the line. Another way is to use the point that contains the y-intercept and the slope of the line.

Graphing by Using Slope and y-intercept

Graph the line given the slope and y-intercept.

y intercept = 4

Step 1 The y-intercept is 4, so the line contains (0, 4). Plot (0, 4).

Step 3 Draw the line through the two points.

Run = 5

Rise = –2

Step 2 Slope = Count 2

units down and 5 units right from (0, 4)

and plot another point.

y

Try This!

Graph the line given the slope and y-intercept.

slope = 2, y-intercept = –3

Step 1 The y-intercept is –3, so the line contains (0, –3). Plot (0, –3).

Step 3 Draw the line through the two points.

Rise = 2

Run = 1

Step 2 Slope =

Count 2 units up and 1 unit right from

(0, –3) and plot another point.

Graph each line given the slope and y-intercept.

slope = , y-intercept = 1

Try this!

Step 1 The y-intercept is 1, so the line contains (0, 1). Plot (0, 1).

Step 3 Draw the line through the two points.

Rise = –2

Run = 3

Step 2 Slope = Count 2

units down and 3 units right from (0, 1)

and plot another point.

What about those dreaded horizontal and vertical lines?• Horizontal lines have ZERO or NO slope. This means they do not

rise or fall!• Vertical lines have UNDEFINED slope. This means the denominator

is zero!!!!

Vertical Line

Horizontal Line

To write the equation of a Horizontal Line you use the format y = b, where b is the y-intercept. (Ex. y = 2)

To write the equation of a Vertical Line, you use the format x = a, where a is the x-intercept. (Ex. x = -8)

(-8, 2)

Finding Slopes and Writing Equations of Horizontal and Vertical Lines

Find the slope of each line. Then write the equation of each line.

The slope is undefined. The slope is 0.

A. B.

The line passes through the x-axis at 3, so the equation of this line is x = 3.

The line passes through the y-axis at 0, so the equation of this line is y = 0.

Try This!

Find the slope of each line. Then write the equation of each line.

A. B.

The slope is undefined. The slope is 0.

The line passes through the x-axis at 0, so the equation of this line is x = 0.

The line passes through the y-axis at -4, so the equation of this line is y = -4.
