Sam’s Club Reports First Quarter Results Company Press Release – May 17, 2018

Sam’s Club reported first quarter sales and operating results for its United States locations ending April 27, 2018 via a press release and prerecorded conference call. The following is a summary of that information:

Sales and Earnings – First quarter sales, including gasoline, decreased 2.7% from $13.99 billion last year to $13.62 billion this year. First quarter sales, excluding gasoline, decreased 4.1% to $12.38 billion. Operating income, including gasoline, decreased 18.5% from $399 million last year to $325 million this year. Operating income, excluding gasoline, decreased 19.9% to $313 million. The decrease in sales and operating income was due to the fact that last year’s data included the 60 closed locations in the United States.

Comparable Sales – Sam’s first quarter comparable sales results indicate that the company’s decision to close 60 underperforming locations in the United States was sound. Sam’s Club reported first quarter comparable sales increased 5.3% including gasoline and 3.8% excluding gasoline. The 3.8% comparable sales growth excluding gasoline was Sam’s strongest result since it reported 4.2% comparable sales growth excluding gasoline in its second quarter of its 2013 fiscal year (May, June and July of 2012).

Average member traffic increased 5.6% and the company’s average transaction decreased 1.8% excluding gasoline and decreased 0.3% including gasoline. The 5.6% average member traffic growth is the company’s strongest result since it began publicly reporting this data point in November, 2010. Ecommerce sales contributed approximately 100 basis points to the first quarter comparable sales figure.

Private Label – Private label sales penetration of the company’s Member’s Mark brand increased 220 basis points compared to last year. Excluding gasoline and tobacco, Member’s Mark represents approximately 27% of Sam’s merchandise sales.

Merchandise Gross Margins – First quarter merchandise gross margins decreased 34 basis points including gasoline and decreased 23 basis points excluding gasoline. The decrease was due to shrink, increased transportation costs and retail price investments.

Membership Income – First quarter membership income increased 0.9% compared to last year.

Inventory – Inventory at Sam’s remaining locations, excluding the 60 closed locations, decreased 1.7%.

Fresh, Freezer and Cooler – Comparable sales increased in the mid single digits with strong results in deli, produce, prepared foods, seafood and dairy.

Grocery and Beverage – Comparable sales increased in the mid single digits with stronger results in coffee, breakfast, water, soda and snacks.

Consumables – Comparable sales increased in the high single digits with strong results in tabletop, laundry/cleaning and paper goods.

Home and Apparel – Comparable sales increased in the mid single digits with strong results in tires, outdoor living, basic apparel, domestics and kitchen electrics.

Technology, Office and Entertainment – Comparable sales increased in the low single digits with stronger results in office and tablets.

Health and Wellness – Comparable sales increased in the high single digits with strong results in over-the-counter drugs.
