Spring is on the way and we couldn't be more thankful! The children are enjoying some much needed time outside burning some energy. We held enrollment in February, and although we still have a few openings in our younger classes, we had a wonderful turnout! We can't wait to welcome so many new families to Ward Parkway Preschool! We will have Speech and Hearing screenings in March for our younger classes, and Spring Break will be March 11-14. We will begin hatching ducks on March 19th. It's a long process, but we all learn some patience. The outcome is so worth it! Chapel will be held on March 20 & 21 and the children will learn about God being faithful! On March 28th the KC Zoo Mobile will visit the preschool. This is a new experience for the children, so we are all excited to see what the zoo has to offer! Culver's Night will take place on April 2nd. Please come and fellowship with us. This is always such a fun event! Dad's and Donuts will be on April 3rd and 4th. Ash Wednesday isn’t until March 6, and Easter Sunday is April 21, only a few Sundays before Mother’s Day. The earliest date for Easter is March 22. It occurred in 2016, and next year will be 2285. The very latest possible date for Easter is April 25. It occurred in 1943, and the next year will be 2038. I find it difficult to think about the years 2038 and 2285. I’ll be 91 years old in 2038, and I’ll be in the ground in 2288. What will the future bring by the year 2285, 266 years from today? Think back 266 years. It was the year 1753. The colonies were still connected to Great Britain. It’s 23 years before the American Revolution. George Washington was a Major in the British army. It was twenty years before the Tea Party in Boston. Some think the Colonial Period (1602-1753) of American history ended in 1753 as the sixth generation settlers looked toward freedom. Since 1753, consider all of the inventions and innovations. This year, geniusstuff.com revealed the ten inventions that changed the world: the plow, the wheel, the printing press, refrigeration, communications (telegraph, telephone, radio, and television), steam engine, automobile, lightbulb, computer, and internet. The first three occurred before 1753, but the last seven were invented recently with the computer coming in the 1950s and 1960s. What will happen to our world in the next 266 years? It’s hard to think about it. I’m sure George Washington didn’t guess the advent of telephones and lightbulbs. Nor did Theodore Roosevelt think about the transistor or superconductivity. Nor did Ronald Regan know about the advent of smart phones or computers. Nor did Jimmy Carter have in his mind the digital camera or Facebook. It’s impossible for us to consider inventions and innovation to come about in the next ten years, much less 266 years. Yet, God is the Alpha and Omega, the past and the future. Revelations 1:8 puts it: “…who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.” We don’t know, but God does. As we approach Lent, a time of repentance and preparation for the Holy Days, let us trust God for the future. It does us no good to worry about what will come and what will happen and what we will be. Instead, let us trust Almighty God who is worthy of our trust. With God’s unfailing love, Bob

Dear Friends at Ward Parkway:

Lent comes late this year.

January/February Session Notes Congregational Meeting February 5, 2019

The following people were elected: For deacon: Diana Justus, Emily Lantz (second term), Rosemary McDaneld For ruling elder: Mark Ihde for Adult Education Elder, Karen Wiederaenders (second term) for Clerk of Session and Elder at large. During the meeting of the Corporation Steve Nelson was elected trustee and Don Barta was elected to a second term as trustee. Tom Stewart reported that the session has passed a budget for 2019. We anticipate $209,700 in revenue and $205,108 in expenses.

Session Meeting January 23, 2019 James Lusk was elected Treasurer. The noisy offering raised over $2412.80 so the kids were able to buy several items and had money left over. The extra money was given to the Presbyterian Missions Council to spend as they see fit. Steve Guthrie has installed a new smart thermo-stat in the sanctuary. Our long-time custodian, Scott Curry, has decided to retire so Steve will begin the search for a replacement. The Pastor Nominating Committee is still working and has conducted some second interviews.

Session Meeting February 19

Because of inclement weather, the regular session meeting was cancelled. There was no pressing business so the Clerk asked for printed reports and distributed them online for comment. Sarah Nettels asked the Session to approve the One Great Hour of Sharing offering, to be taken either Palm Sunday (April 14) or Easter Sunday (April 21). Tina will be on vacation next week. Lynne Crossette has volunteered to be trained as office assistant to help in times of need. Carmen Rinehart said thanks to all who helped make Advent and Christmas worship experiences meaningful. Ash Wednesday worship will be held in the Sanctuary at 6:30 p.m. Maundy Thursday service will be in the Fellowship Hall at 6:00 p.m. It will include a simple meal, followed by worship and Communion. Protocol for inclement weather cancellations for Sunday worship was discussed. A decision will be made by 7:00 a.m. by the Worship and Operations elders and the Pastor. The Pastor Nominating Committee asks that you continue to pray for their search and they are encouraged by the fact that we now have a different liaison from the Presbytery.

As we enter Lent, it is good to be reminded, once more, that the struggle with evil in this world be-gins with that same struggle within ourselves. The Lenten discipline of introspection is a process where we know and acknowledge our limitations and vulnerability in preparation for the joyful news that Easter brings. That message cannot escape the shadow of the cross. When we prepare ourselves once again for the ultimate renewal that comes to us and to the earth in Easter, there are two services of worship to help us in the journey. Ash Wednesday- Wednesday, March 6 at 6:30 p.m. in our Sanctuary Maundy Thursday-in the Fellowship Hall at 6:00 p.m. This will be a simple meal, followed by Communion. Please make this a part of your spiritual discipline. You will find it a blessing. Carmen

One Great Hour of Sharing

During Lent, many people “give up” something … coffee, pastries, chocolate. This Lenten season, we can “give to” God's healing work in the world through One Great Hour of Sharing, one of the four special offerings collected by PC(USA) congrega-tions each year. The resources we share through One Great Hour of Sharing go to Presbyterian Dis-aster Assistance, which helps “the least of these” in the midst of natural disasters, refugee crises and other emergencies. Money for that latte can help buy a meal or blanket, so start setting aside what you can and be ready to be part of One Great Hour of Sharing!

The Annual Easter Egg Hunt will be immediately following Easter Worship.
