Positive Behaviour Support Over the term, we have been focusing on a behaviour that is taught at assembly each week. So far our students have been taught these behaviours at assembly: ☺ The 5Ls of Listening ☺ Keep to the left when walking on stairs, verandahs

and breezeway ☺ Be friendly and greet others ☺ Respond quickly to signals and instructions ☺ Be responsible for our own property

I encourage you to ask your children about these behaviours, and support them where you can. GRIP Leadership Conference On Tuesday, 12 March year 7 students from Narrogin, East Narrogin and Wickepin travelled to Perth for the annual GRIP Leadership. The main goal of the conference was for the student leaders to leave the conference with a clear vision, a solid understanding and dozens of ideas for their time as a leader. The students were actively engaged in learning about the skills in effective leadership. They were given the opportunity to network with Year 7 leaders from other schools and enjoyed asking questions to the GRIP Leadership Team about qualities of a successful leader. I will be inviting Year 7 leaders to volunteer to speak at a Rotary and Lions Club meeting about their experience on the GRIP Leadership Conference, and to thank them for their sponsorship towards this educational event. All students were very well behaved on the day and are now very enthusiastic to continue to learn more about effective leadership and practise these skills in their leadership roles. Thankyou to Mrs Hancock, Marty Vause and Mrs Corasanti for helping me supervise this excursion. I have included a sample of a Year 7 recount on this event in the newsletter.

Swimming Clinic Special thanks to Mr Paul Dyson for offering a swimming clinic to our interschool swimmers last Monday. It was great to see the High School students provide tips and strategies on the techniques of swimming. Special thanks to Morgan Barr, Pippa Bairstow, Georgia Dyson, Amy Coetzer and Sophie Potts for providing their expertise to our students.

Cycle to School Day Thanks to all students for eagerly participating in the cycle to school day last Tuesday. We had 38 bikes in the bike racks!! We also had many students walk and use scooters to get to school. It was encouraging to

Wake-up and Read

By Sarah Coetzer On Tuesday, 12 March 2013, the kids from Kindy to Year Six went to a ‘Wake-Up and Read’ incursion. We sat in the undercover area. Frank Ozo, the presenter of the show, taught us about the importance of school, reading and books. Frank did magic tricks that were amazing and unbelievable. He had a book that floated in the air, which he had supposedly done a spell on the book. Frank put a hula-hoop around the book and there were no strings or anything holding it up! Afterwards Frank sang a song that represented him and his life. When Frank was younger, he didn’t enjoy school due to him not knowing how to speak English, only Italian. Soon though, his parents persuaded him to go back to school. Frank started to enjoy school after that because he started to make friends. Thirdly Frank did a puppet show; I think it told you a little bit of his life and how he was raised. There were two people, a jester (Mr Punch) and a clown (Geoff). Mr Punch didn’t like reading because he thought it was boring and he had other things to do rather than read, but Geoff really loved reading and he was determined to get Mr Punch to like reading. They argued for a bit and then Geoff had to go. Mr Punch thought he might go ride his bike but that had a flat tyre, then he thought he’d go for a skateboard ride, but that had lost its wheels! He got over that and thought about going for a swim but it was winter! Mr Punch had nothing else to do so he decided to actually read a book! Overall, I really enjoyed Wake-up and Read. Frank is extremely talented.

Year 7 Leadership Conference

By Josh Tolley On 12 March, all the Year 7’s from Narrogin, East Narrogin and four Year 7’s from Wickepin Primary School all met at our school at 5.45 am!!!! We were all off to the Perth Convention Centre to attend the GRIP Leadership Conference. It was so early for everyone, but we were all excited. We all waited for other kids to arrive so we could start getting on the bus. We all got on the bus, and we all grouped up with our friends, because heaps of people were nervous to make new friends. Our teachers on our bus were great, and they dealt with our problems pretty fairly, which made the bus ride heaps more enjoyable for everybody. We arrived at the Perth Convention Centre, it was so big and awesome! When we got inside we all grouped up in 2 lines and started walking to the big room we were meant to be at, and when we walked into that room, OMG there were tons of kids, roughly 1000 of them, imagine that! We all sat down and there was a book and a pen for us to use, and I think that’s great that they supplied us with that stuff. Then we straight away started learning about leadership. We did this great activity called “Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes,” which Head stands for, ‘think of others’, Shoulders stands for, ‘carry the load for others,’ Knees stands for, ‘moving forward’ and Toes stands for, ‘balancing responsibilities.’ We also did an activity called “Australia’s Got Talent,” where we went and answered some funny questions like, ‘can you touch your nose with your tongue,’ and the first person done to answer those questions got to go up to the stage and tell the man who those people were. Not long after the activities we had our recess with our school and sat down and ate our food. After our snack break we went back in and wrote about leadership and learnt that leaders aren’t born, they’re made. So then we watched short clips of movies like Madagascar 3, Toy Story, Cars etc and we had to say who the leader was. Not long after that we had our lunch break, we sat down and did the same thing we did at recess break. Now it was session 3 and we learnt how to work in a team with other students. We left at approx 2pm so we could be home in time. On the way home we stopped at McDonalds for a snack and arrived back in Narrogin at 6pm.
