The Principal Report – 21st April 2016
ANZAC DAY – MONDAY 25TH APRIL, 2016 On Monday, one of our school captains, Raj Parhaar along with Ellia Leocato will represent the school at the
ANZAC Day ceremony at the cenotaph. We are also conducting a school assembly this Friday to recognise
the significance of ANZAC Day.
VMG/VCE SELECTIONS SEMESTER 2 Our VMG students have recently made their selections for Semester 2 and we are beginning the process of allocating students to classes. At the VCE level, a small number of students will be making changes to their present course and this will occur in late May. NAPLAN TESTING Years 7 and 9 students will be completing tests in Literacy and Numeracy. These will take place from Tuesday 10th May until Thursday 12th May. Results from these tests are returned to the school towards the end of Term 3 and posted out to parents. Any parent who wishes to withdraw their child from this testing should contact the Main Office and we will provide you with a withdrawal form to sign. If you would like duplicate sets of your child's NAPLAN results, please notify the Main Office. XUNO FEEDBACK Thanks to all parents who took the time to complete the survey on Xuno at the recent Parent/Teacher Interviews. This information will help us further refine our systems as we aim to provide quality feedback for our students and parents/guardians. PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS The Parent/Teacher interviews conducted at the end of Term 1 resulted in 3569 interviews being conducted for 659 students. 160 parents/guardians filled out a survey regarding online feedback and XUNO on the day and while it identified a few problems, the overwhelming response was support for the system. Parents identified a problem in locating some of the information in XUNO, and later in this newsletter there are instructions to make this task easier to navigate. Further feedback on possible improvements to the system is welcome and we will endeavour to improve the system over time. The next Parent/Teacher interviews will be held at the end of Term 3, and in the meantime parents are reminded that teachers are using XUNO to provide regular feedback on student progress. The portal also allows parents to check their child’s attendance, download reports and contact their child’s teachers. The Wanganui Parent Portal can be accessed at http://xuno.wanganuipsc.vic.edu.au. If you have misplaced or not received your username and password please contact the Main Office either by phone on 58209900 or by email at [email protected]. HELP REQUIRED The canteen staff would really appreciate it if there are any parents who might be able to offer some time to assist. No previous experience is necessary. If you can help, even if it is only once, please contact the school. SPA CYCLE SPA Cycle 2 reports will be available in the week beginning Monday 16th May.

RACE AROUND LA TROBE
As part of the Schools Partnership Program, Mrs Amadei’s Level One students were treated
to a discovery day at the Shepparton campus of La Trobe University.
The excursion to our local university introduced students to the facilities available if they
choose to pursue a tertiary education.
Students were divided into two groups and given instructions to find 13 destinations around
La Trobe and also GO TAFE. Race Around La Trobe resulted in the students considering their
career aspirations and understanding that some career paths can be catered for without
moving away from family and friends.
Other level one VMG classes will be attending this excursion throughout the months of April
and May.

Victorian Curriculum at its best!
Students in Advanced and Magic Metal have been hard at work producing their projects using a variety
of processes and machines. So far we have 22 different designs from the same design brief and constraints. This
is an example of how the Victorian Curriculum works in a Design and Technology context. Students have
excelled with this task and it has been very pleasing to see the development of their problem-solving and
design/construction skills since our curriculum change.

could ever ask for.
When Jack Andraka was thirteen, he had a whole pile of problems. An outsider at school, he knew he didn't fit in - and a close family friend was dying of cancer. But instead of giving in to the bullying and the despair, he took another path. Using his passion for science, he decided to try to create a better method of cancer detection. Jack's early-detection test for pancreatic, ovarian, and lung cancers has the potential to be over four hundred times more effective than the medical standard - and it costs only three cents per use. Jack was just fifteen at the time he came up with his solution.
In the blink of an eye, everyone disappears. Gone. Except for the young. There are teens, but not one single adult. Just as suddenly, there are no phones, no internet, no television. No way to get help. And no way to figure out what's happened. Hunger threatens. Bullies rule. A sinister creature lurks. Animals are mutating. And the teens themselves are changing, developing new talents-unimaginable, dangerous, deadly powers-that grow stronger by the day. It's a terrifying new world. Sides are being chosen, a fight is shaping up. Townies against rich kids. Bullies against the weak. Powerful against powerless. And time is running out: on your birthday, you disappear just like everyone else. . .
VCE Health and Human Development – Dietician Guest Speaker
On Monday 18th
April, students undertaking VCE Health and Human Development from the local government
schools had the opportunity to listen to Emma Frizzell who is a practising dietician at GV Health. Emma spoke
to the students about the National Health Priority Areas and the Nutrition that has an impact on these areas.
These are key areas of study in Unit 3 and were the focus of the most recent SAC. It was great to hear from
someone working in the health field as many of our students are interested in a similar career pathway.
McGuire College hosted the after school session. Students attended from Wanganui Park SC, Shepparton High
School , McGuire College, Mooroopna SC and Numurkah SC. This activity was organised as part of the VCE
HHD Teacher’s Network and we look forward to providing similar activities for our students throughout the
year.
Red Dust Heelers – Wheelchair Basketball Visit On Thursday 14
th April, the Active Life for Boys class received a visit from a group called the Red Dust
Heelers. The aim of the group is to spread the message about people living with disabilities, also with an
Indigenous focus. The group included several Paralympians, Claire Nott and Brad Ness who had represented
Australia in the Sydney, Athens, Beijing and London Olympic games in wheelchair basketball. It was great to
hear the stories of the athletes talking about life with their disabilities and the challenges they’ve faced. They
also spoke about the amazing opportunities they’ve been given by going to an Olympic games. Claire Nott
brought in her Olympic medals for the boys to look at. The boys were then split up into two groups and one
group got to play some wheelchair basketball and learn a bit about the game, while the other group had a Q and
A session with the Paralympians. The main message being: how important Resilience is in your life no matter
what life throws your way. The boys had a great time trying wheelchair basketball and testing their skills
against the visitors.

Lawn Mower Service Program
VCAL Personal Development Skills have started their Lawn Mower Service Program this week. Students
from Foundation PDS perform a basic service for staff such as a blade, oil and air filter change for $25.00
(owner supplies the consumables). Included in this price is a de grease and pressure wash. At this stage the
program is catering for WPSC staff but will be looking to expand in semester 2. Pictured here is Mr Watson’s
pride and joy after VCAL students performed their service.
Melbourne Work Experience Camp 2016 Towards the end of Term 1, 21 WPSC students headed to Melbourne to complete a week of work experience. They were joined by 12 students from other Shepparton public schools in the Alliance. The camp was designed to give students the experience of working and living in Melbourne, and to expose them to a range of workplaces of the type and scale they would not usually have access to in Shepparton. The work placements were facilitated through Boundless, a not-for-profit organisation, and were with a range of leading organisations including Mercedes-Benz’s head office, the Olivia Newton John Cancer Research Institute, Ashurst Lawyers and the Department of Justice – Human Rights Division. Students had an outstanding time and learnt a lot: ‘I met some great people who shared their experiences of how they got to where they are now and the pathways they chose. I had to introduce myself to a lot of people, which I got more confident and better at. This was very helpful and I will definitely be great at this in future years.’ ‘My placement at Mercedes Benz went extremely well. I was working with great supervisors and was able to explore different areas of engineering such as 3-D design, vehicle certification and hands on work.’ ‘I learnt lots of new things about antibodies and how to get proteins from the cells, and it gave me a really good look at what goes on in a research institute.’ We would like to thank all of the businesses and organisations who hosted students this year, Boundless for organizing the placements and funding, and the Lighthouse Project and Fairley Foundation for their financial support.
