Founded in 1842, Walworth® has been leader in the valve industry since its inception, continuing to utilize thelatest technology for product improvement and the development of new products. Today, Walworth® offers complete lines of industrial valves in a variety of configurations, sizes, pressure classes and materials.

Walworth® continues to meet and exceed the quality standards required for products used in Nuclear, Military,Industrial and Process installations. These valves are manufactured under and comply with strict internationalstandards such as API, ANSI, ASME, ASTM, MSS, NACE, AWWA, BSI, CSA, etc.

Walworth® Engineers are continuously evaluating our existing product utilizing all of today’s advanced analysis andengineering tools to assure that our valves conform to customer requirements as well as industry standards.New designs are made following the same rigorous methodology and are tested in our laboratory under actualload/pressure conditions. Additionally, they are subjected to cyclic operation under pressure to determinewear/life expectancy.

All Walworth® manufacturing facilities operate under quality systems such as the International StandardsOrganization ISO-9001 series and the American Petroleum Institute API Q1 Specifications for quality. These systems have been in place for more than ten years and are audited for compliance by independent auditorsfor ISO and/or API as well as by such customers as BP/Arco, Shell Oil, Exxon/Mobil, Texaco, Dow Chemical, etc.

Casting and forging product quality is assured through close control of our own foundry and forging facilities. The same type of close control is exercised over all of our suppliers through continuous verification of materialsand part, form, fit and function.

The Walworth® group of enterprises is dedicated to the design, manufacture and servicing of flow control productsthat effectively meet our customers requirements.

The complete line of Walworth® products are manufactured under a controlledQuality Assurance System with documented procedures that meet all industryspecifications and customer requirements. These procedures and controls includeraw material purchasing and verification, process controls, assembly, test andshipping with all required documentation.

The Walworth® Quality Assurance System is documented in a Manual that hasbeen approved by ISO and API. Walworth® has been awarded an ISO-9001Certificate and is licensed by API to monogram API 6A and API 6D product underthe API Q1 monogram program.

Each valve undergoes a design validation through a function and pressure test todemonstrate conformance to requirements. This results in a Material Test Report(MTR) documenting the chemical and mechanical properties for the pressure containing parts that is traceable to the valve serial number. The results of anyadditional non-destructive examinations (NDE) are also recorded and referencedto the valve serial number.

All valves are identified and marked conforming to the requirements of ASME B16.34 and MSS SP-25 both on the valve body and valve name plate.

Cast Steel Gate Valves with fixed handwheel and rising stem(outside screw and yoke) (OS&Y)

Stem Nut, replaceable in line.

Rising stem with precisionACME double thread for quickoperation.

Stem-Gate connection designedso that under severe appliedloads (stuck gate), the stem willfail outside of the stuffing boxpressure boundry.

Stem Packing is designed foroptimum control of fugitiveemissions leakage to the atmosphere. The ultra-low emission leakage rate is assuredby the fine finish on the stemsealing area, the reduced diametrical clearances and thestem straightness control.

Backseat, designed to relieveback pressure on the stempacking when fully seated.Replacing stem packing underpressure is not recommended.

Body to Bonnet joint designedto apply a uniform load to thegasket to assure a leak proofseal.

Seat rings are seal welded toprovide a bubble tight joint.

Stellited Seat Rings provideincreased resistance to wear, abrasion and erosion of thesealing surfaces.

Pressure Transients Test LoopThis test exposes plug valves to the extreams of both positiveand negative pressure transients to verify that the plug in a balanced plug design will not lock-up in the body.

Fire TestingInstallation area for valves subject to fire testing under API requirements. The test exposes the valve to a flame temperatureof 1400°F to 1800°F for 30 minutes with controlled limits on leakage.

Fugitive Emissions TestThe measurement of emissions through the body/bonnet joint andpast the stem packing are made under full rated pressure. Themeasurements are made in both the static and dynamic conditionsunder both ambient and thermal cycle operations.

Test LoopThis is where valve designs are verified and validated,by cycling the valves open-closed and opening underpressure. This requires from four (4) to six (6) monthsto complete 3000 to 5000 cycles.

Control and RecordingA computerized system is used to control the test and torecord the results. This provides accurate and permanentdocumentation.

Certified Quality Control

Handwheel Nut

Impactor Handwheel, the mechanism is based on transmitting the momentum generated by the mass of thehandwheel through the impact/impulse generated duringthe snap closure action of the handwheel. This type ofhandwheel is used when a standard handwheel cannotcreate enough closing force to effect a seal.

Stem Nut replaceable in the line.

Revolving rising stem with precision ACME thread.

Stem Packing is designed foroptimum control of fugitiveemissions leakage to the atmosphere. The ultra low emission leakage rate is assuredby the fine finish in the stem, the reduced diametricalclearences and the stemstraightness control.

Body to Bonnet Joint designedto apply a uniform load to thegasket to assure a leak proofseal.

Backseat designed to relieveback pressure on the stempacking when fully seated.Replacing stem packing underpressure is not recommended.

Conical Disc, integrally guided toassure true alignment betweendisc and valve body. The loosedisc design allows the disc andseat ring sealing surface to seatcorrectly without damage.

Stellited Seat Ring, providingincreased resistance to ware, abrasion and erosion of the sealing surface.

Seat ring is seal welded to provide a bubble tight joint..

Fugitive emissions test at high temperature.

Fugitive emissions test at ambient temperature.

Equipment and installation for fugitive emission measurement with methane and helium gass at bottambient temperature and hight temperature.

Walworth® remains a leader in the development of newvalve technology just as it has been since it was establishedin 1842. One example of our continued development is theextensive testing of many different Packing Systems forimproved/lower fugitive emissions in our standard " valves.

A great number of different volatile organic compounds(VOC) have been identified as potentially damaging to theatmosphere and human health. These VOC’s are generallyfound in processes used in refineries and chemical plantsand can be emitted to the atmosphere past sealing members ofvarious pressure vessels such as pumps, compressors, valves, etc. Close control of these fugitive emissions has become alaw enforced by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)and other International Environmental Control Agencies.

Walworth® has tested body to bonnet seals for zero leakage and developed and tested new technology for stempacking that achieves a lower than 50 PPM leakage rate. This technology is standard in all Walworth® off-the-shelfvalves making our standard valve acceptable in countriesand facilities where strict control of emissions is required.

Walworth® can also furnish an ultra low emissions stempacking utilizing a live loading system to achieve a consistantlong term very low emission leakage rate.

Walworth® valves are designed, manufactured and testedto meet 50 PPM VOC fugitive emission leak rate as a standardoff the shelf valve. This applies to all gate and globe valves, both Cast Steel and Forge Steel, without a requirement fora "special order" .

Walworth® uses a stem packing of flexible graphite incorporatinga passive corrosion inhibitor in a combination of high and lowdensity sealing rings with anti-extrusion end rings reinforcedwith Inconel wire.

The long term low emission stem sealing ability ofWalworth® packing is enhanced by reduced diametralclearances and close control of stem straightness and packingsealing surface finish.

Walworth® can also provide gate and globe valves with astem packing live loading system for installations requiringfrequent valve operation and/or having large variations intemperature/pressure or where it is desirable to eliminatethe need for occasional adjustment of the packing tocompensate for the variations in operation. Live loadingwill provide a constant compression against the packing tomaintain the optimum seal over a long period of time andvariations in the operating conditions.

Walworth® can also supply valves with stem packing of different types and materials to meet the customer requirements.

The type of material used to overlay the sealing surfaces on gates(discs) and seats is determined by the type of trim designated.

The Walworth® standard trim is API No. 8 (UT) where thesealing surface of the gate is overlaid with 410 StainlessSteel (13% Cr) and the seat sealing surface is overlaid withStellite No. 6.

This standard trim provides good resistance to corrosion, wear, abrasion and erosion that can be caused by the fluid

flowing through the system. The controlled difference inhardness between the 410 Stainless Steel and the Stellite No.6 provides good resistance to galling during normal operation.

Walworth® can furnish valves with a variety of trims andmaterials to meet the customers requirements for an optimumservice life.

41

• Provides resistance to possible wedge/seat sticking from high temperature to low temperature fluctuations by compensating for the resulting small body/seat movement.

• Facilitates seating and sealing and assures a long wear life.

• Susceptable to build-up when used with fluids having a high solids content.

• More susceptable to wedge/seat "sticking" and difficulty in opening when closed hot and allowed to cool due to theresulting small body/seat movement.

• Less able to compensate for the normal wedge/seat wear over the long term.

• Will handle fluids with a high solids content without difficulty.

Flexible wedge characteristics:

Solid wedge characteristics:

Walworth® gate valves are available with either flexible wedges or solid wedges to meet customer requirements.

42

Walworth® Cast Steel Valves, are furnished with seal welded seat rings as standard. This permitsa leak proof assembly that is separately hydrostatically pressure tested assuring a positive seal.

Seal Welded Seat Rings

Threaded Seat Rings

• Welded in seat rings become an integral part of the body maintaining the original wedge/discalignment for long life. Seal welded seat rings can be replaced and retired.

• Threaded seat rings require a thread sealant that can be a problem at high temperature. Thiscould lead to an alignment problem if the seat ring were to become loose due to a loss ofsealant. The threads are also more susceptible to corrosion than the solid make-up of the sealwelded seat ring.

Page 45: Walworth API 600 Gate Globe Check

The system can be utilized to lubricate the packingor to drain/purge the stem area to a leakagerecovery system when liquids/gasses cannot bereleased to the atmosphere.

Walworth® API 600 valves can be provided witha stem packing/lantern ring combination of packingabove and below the lantern ring to provide theability to condense/vent material being processed.

The National Association of Corrosion Engineers(NACE) establishes standards for materials resistant to Sulfide Stress Cracking (SSC) to beused in hydrogen sulfide (H2S) bearing hydrocarbonservice.

NACE standard MR0175 defines a sulfide stresscracking region based on the relationship of H2Spresent to the total operating pressure.

This must be considered when specifying valvesfor service where H2S is present as proper selec-tion of materials is a customer responsibility.

Sulfide stress cracking in materials not suitablefor H2S service can result in a sudden failure withdamage to equipment and harm to personnel.

1. Hydrogen ion concentration (Ph).

2. Concentration and total pressure of the hydrogen sulfide (H2S).

3. Concentration of water, carbon dioxide (CO2) and chlorides.

4. Service temperature.

The customer can select valves made of alloy/carbonsteel material with controlled hardness and/or a stain-less steel material depending on the severity of thefluid. Valves having a body/bonnet with a controlled

hardness of Rc 22 and studs/nuts of B7M/2HM can becombined with a customer selected trim and manu-factured to meet NACE MR0175 requirements.

Important considerations when specifyng NACE service

45

The Walworth® standard cast steel product lineincludes many different valves designed to meet mostapplications.

Special adaptations can be made to meet specific cus-tomer requirements. Valves can be supplied withmanual handwheel/gear operation, chain wheel, aswell as electric, pneumatic and hydraulic actuators.

This makes it possible for Walworth® to furnish valvesadapted to the customers special needs such as controlled opening/closing and remote installation.

Valves can also be supplied with a bypass, drain orvent connection, stem extension, position indicators, floor stand mounting as well as a lever and weightsystem for swing check valves.

Gear Operators

A manual gear operator is designed with a bevel gearand pinion ratio sized to transmit the required opening/closing torque with normal operator effort onthe handwheel. They can be supplied as waterproofunits and/or for underground installation with asquare operating nut.

Chain Wheel Operation

Chain Wheels are designed for operating valvesinstalled in remote or inaccessible locations. They canbe furnished with roller guides to prevent the chainfrom jumping off the wheel. Impact type chain wheelsare also available to assist in unseating a tightly closedvalve

Actuators

Valves can be furnished with either electric, pneumatic or hydraulic actuators. The actuators can befurnished as either waterproof and/or explosion proof. The customer must specify such things as open-closespeed, maximum differential pressure, service temperature, type of voltage-phase-frequency, air or gaspressure for pneumatic actuators and flow characteristics for hydraulic actuators to be assured ofcorrect performance.

Drain connections are normally located in the valve body to drainthe valve when internal inspection or maintenance is required.

A vent connection can be located in the valve bonnet to relievean over-pressure that could occur due to an expansion of trappedliquid.

MSS SP-45 lists the standard locations and connection sizes forgate, globe and check valves

Bypass, Drain and Vent Connections

Stem Extensions and Floor Stands

Stem extensions and floor stands are used to facilitateoperation of a valve installed either underground, in avault, or on a platform. These arrangements are availablefor either handwheel, chainwheel or gear operation. Thedistance from the center of the valve port to the top of thestem or center line of the gear operator must be specifiedfor stem extensions. The distance from the center of thevalve port to the floor level must be specified for a floorstand mounting.

Lever and Counter Weight

A lever and counter weight is used on a swing check valveto help control the valve opening under variable flow con-ditions to prevent disc flutter and also to assist/control thedisc closing under a rapid flow reversal condition to preventdisc/seat damage. A spring can also be used with a lever toprovide a more rapid closing as can a dash pot or snubberto soften the closing seat contact during a flow reversal.

The selection of the construction materials, the type of ends, the characteristics of the flow to be handled, the specificcodes or standards of manufacturing to be applied, theambient conditions, the accessories and special devices areadditional considerations before specifying a valve.

The type of operation required, handwheel, electric, pneumatic, etc. must also be considered. Walworth® valves are regularlysupplied with handwheel manual operation unless otherwisespecified.

The valve identification system shown below is intended toassist the customer in valve specification and help avoidmistakes in manufacture and delivery.

This catalog has been prepared to assist our customers inchoosing the correct valve for a vast number of serviceconditions. Its most important to know the type and characteristicsof the process to be handled. Care should be taken to selectvalves suitable for your service.

A gate valve should be operated in a totally open or totallyclosed position and not be used for flow regulation. It isdesigned so that the pressure drop is minimum.

Globe valves are recommended to regulate or choke fluidflow. The globe valve results in a high pressure drop. Aglobe angle valve is used to change flow direction. Checkvalves are recommended to prevent flow reversal.
