Walter Murray Jr. was born in Nashville in 1948 and graduated from Pearl High School in 1966. As a Vanderbilt undergraduate, he was vice president of the Student Association and founder of the Afro-American Association and Project Opportunity. In his senior year, he was elected by his classmates to a four year term on the Vanderbilt Board of Trust.

After graduating in 1970, Rev. Murray worked at Vanderbilt as an admissions counselor and later as the university’s first Opportunity Development officer. After receiving a master of management degree from Owen in 1974, he earned a master of divinity degree from Harvard in 1986. Rev. Murray served as managing director of INROADS and as adjunct faculty at Andover Newton Theological School. He later became minister of Zion Baptist Church in Lynn, MA.

Rev. Murray was recognized by the Massachusetts state legislature and the Massachusetts Council of Churches for his ecumenical leadership against violence. In 1996, he received the First Decade Award from Harvard Divinity School. He founded the Association of Vanderbilt Black Alumni and became the namesake of its Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1995.
