Walking Through Holy Week with Pope Francis

Throughout our Lenten journey, we have experienced life as a pilgrimage. On Ash Wednesday, weembraced prayer, fasting, and almsgiving: the Lenten disciplines which set us free to walk as companions

on the journey with Christ. Our participants in the Ignatian Centre retreat learned to share their personalfaith journey with a trusted prayer companion, to grow in self-knowledge as they encountered Christ inand through the Scriptures. Our faith-sharing groups have prayed and discussed what it means to long forthe Holy. Our meditation group meets Christ in the stillness and silence of contemplative practice. Wehave supported the Development and Peace campaign for human dignity, spoken out against euthanasiaand human trafficking, and expanded our outreach to the poor, hungry, and sick in our own parish andneighborhood. Add to this all the personal commitments we have embraced on our own Lenten journeys.

Ever since Pope Benedicts unexpected resignation in early February, we have experienced the uncertaintyof the sedevacante period, the excitement of the conclave, and the joy of the election of Pope Francis.

While fully in continuity with the rich history of the papacy, of an apostolic succession that connects us allthe way back to Peter and therefore to Christ, many of us have felt in Pope Francis a genuine breath of fresh air, a new sense of hope for the future of our Church. We think of the many firsts he represents:the first Pope from Latin America; the first Jesuit Pope. The first Pope Francis powerfully embodies thevision of St. Francis of Assisi: in his hope for a church not only present to the poor, but a poor church; inhis desire to connect with ordinary people, with a minimum of fuss, reaching out particularly to the poor, the elderly, the disabled; in his ability to preach the Gospel powerfully, yet with great tenderness andsensitivity; in his openness to dialogue, and ability to connect with those for whom the church has becomea source of irrelevance or anger. This is a time of hope!

So as we walk through Holy Week, let us carry these images with us. On Holy Thursday, as we celebratethe great self-gift of Christ in the Eucharist, manifest in Jesus gesture of humble, foot-washing service, let us be moved by those images of Pope Francis washing the feet of drug addicts, of persons with AIDS, of expectant mothers and newborn babies. On Good Friday, as we reflect on Christs Passion and Death, let us remember the words he spoke to the Cardinals: When we journey without the cross, build without thecross, confess Christ without the cross, we are not disciples of the Lord: we are worldly, we may bebishops, priests, cardinals, popes, but not disciples of the Lord. At Easter, as we bless Fire and Water, aswe offer bread and wine, we recall Pope Francis invitation to become protectors of all creation. Andfinally, as we celebrate the sacraments of initiation with Frank, Paul, Megan and Philippe, as we renew our

own baptismal promises, let us pledge to be witnesses of Easter joy and hope: To protect creation, toprotect every man and every woman, to look upon them with tenderness and love, is to open up a horizonof hope. May the spirit of hope fill our sails as with Christ, as with his vicar on earth Pope Francis, we

journey through the Cross to the Resurrection.
