THANK YOUThe Mizen family and For Jimmy thank you for registering for our

biggest event of 2017. We are very excited to have you as part of

the team and look forward to seeing you at the starting lines.

The event began in 2013 as a way of marking what would have

been Jimmy’s 21st Birthday. As part of this celebration we

decided to walk over 21 bridges through London and invite our

supporters to join us on the journey.

Five years in and the event goes from strength to strength.

Choose between 21 bridges, which is just over 22 miles, 14

bridges at 13 miles or 7 bridges at just 4 miles.

Please find enclosed all the information that you need to make

the day fun, enjoyable and most importantly safe.

WALKING FOR JIMMY

“Peace is not a destination, it’s a journey. Will you join us?”

Following the murder of Jimmy Mizen in May 2008, his parents, Barry and Margaret, hit national headlines when immediately after the attack they spoke of compassion rather than revenge. Since that day the Mizen family has been determined to focus on two outcomes; they will not be beaten by his death and that something good will come from it.

Since the charity was founded, For Jimmy*, has worked tirelessly to create a legacy of peace in Jimmy’s name; helping young people to fulfil their potential creating safer and peaceful communities.

*Formerly The Jimmy Mizen Foundation

Our vision is to make Lewisham a place of peace and safety and to share Jimmy’s story across the country.

Our mission to share Jimmy’s story to help all our young people fulfil their potential and build the types of communities we want to live in.

SPONSORSHIP This year, please aim to raise at least £150 in

sponsorship. The quickest and easiest way to fundraise

is by setting up an ‘everyday hero’ page. To set up your

page visit:

Gift Aid increases the value of donations to charities

and Community Amateur Sports Clubs (CASCs) by

allowing them to reclaim basic rate tax on your gift.

For every £1 that is donated from an individual, 25% of

the Tax can be reclaimed to the benefit of the Charity;

thus making your donation worth £1.25. If you pay

higher rate tax you can claim extra relief on your

donations.

More detailed information can be found on the HMRC websitewww.hmrc.gov.uk/individuals/giving/gift-aid.htm

Walkers under the age of 16 must be

accompanied by an adult (at least 1

adult for every 3 children).

We recommend everyone walks in

groups of 2 or more people and don’t

worry if you’ve signed up on your own.

There will be plenty of opportunities

to meet new people at the start line

of each route.

Try to familiarise yourself with the

general route prior to Saturday 4th

July!

AT A GLANCE

Checkpoints will keep you on track, entertained and

safe, with our team of Marshalls posted at each of the

4 checkpoints to catch some memorable moments.

21 BRIDGE ROUTE

The full route crosses 21 bridges in London and is over

22 miles long. This year the route starts at Richmond

Rugby Club and follows the Thames east all the way

to Tower Bridge.

14 BRIDGE ROUTE

The 14 bridge route is shorter and crosses 14 bridges

spanning approximately 13 miles. This route starts

at Premier Inn, Putney Bridge and finishes at Tower

Bridge, the same point as the full route.

ROUTE CARDS

Route Cards will be provided to all participants on

the day detailing navigational instructions. A draft

route is attached although please note we continue to

test the route and reserve the right to make changes.

7 BRIDGE ROUTE

This route is shorter and crosses 7 bridges spanning

approximately 4 miles. This route starts at the

Southbank Centre and finishes at Tower Bridge, the

same point as the full route.

ON THE DAY

On arrival you will receive your own Walking For

Jimmy T-shirt. It would be great if you could all wear

these for the walk as not only will it help to raise

awareness about For Jimmy, but it is fun to spot each

other along the route.

Marshalls will greet you at the beginning of each

reach and at every checkpoint. They will supply you

with route cards, emergency contacts and will keep

a lookout for you at each of the checkpoints. Why not

include them in your photo challenges?

REGISTRATION

Registration will take place at the start of all three

routes and at each checkpoint along the way. Please

allow yourself 15 minutes to sign in at the start of the

21 bridge route. For the shorter 14 bridge and 7 bridge

routes, please arrive between the allotted arrival and

set off times.

ON ARRIVAL

MARSHALLS

There will be toilets at the beginning of all three routes.

However, walking 22 miles is going to take some time,

so it is more than likely that you will need to make a

call of nature at some point during the day! On route

you will find plenty of opportunities to use public

toilets in retail outlets and pubs.

Friends, family and your most adoring fans are more

than welcome to support you at any point along the

route. The checkpoints will be good places to meet up

with friends and family as these areas will have room

for groups to congregate safely.

AND don’t forget we would like to invite everyone

to join you at the Bridge House Bar on Tower Bridge

Road. Here they will be able to help our victorious

participants celebrate getting to the end of the route!

TRAINING PLANIf you are going to walk over 22 miles, you

will be on your feet somewhere between

five to over eight hours... that is a long time

to be up and moving.

We strongly recommend that you consult

with your GP if you are in any doubt about

taking part in the event or starting a

training plan.

STRETCH YOURSELF BEFORE YOU WRECK YOURSELF!

Stretching is beneficial and incorporating other exercises and activities into your training schedule will help to

limit the possibility of overuse injuries.

HYDRATION IS KEY

Drink water before, during and after.

SLOW & STEADY WINS THE RACE!

Build up gradually in speed and distance during training, you increase endurance by increasing miles. As the

distance increases, the pace should decrease.

DO YOU EVEN LIFT BRO?

If you are a beginner walker you will need to do less mileage until you have built a good base. The longer you have

to build this base the better. Your muscles, bones and joints need sufficient time to adapt the stress of adding

mileage.

WALK TO THE BEAT OF YOUR OWN DRUM!

Walk at a pace you’re comfortable with and only increase effort once you’re warmed up.

TOP TIPS FOR THE DAY

Have a good breakfast

Drink water

Bring a healthy snack such as fruit

Drink more water

Pack a high energy snack like a cereal bar

And drink some more water

WHAT TO WEAR Remember, it is very unlikely that the weather when

you leave home first thing in the morning will remain

the same throughout the day. Layering will allow you

to change your clothing according to the temperature.

Hats and sunscreen plus waterproofs should all be

packed just in case. Comfortable, worn-in footwear

such as trainers or walking shoes are essential. Check

the weather report in the days leading up to the event,

rain, wind or shine, prepare for all seasons!

WHAT TO BRING

TOP TIPS FOR THE DAY

Wear-in your shoes

Bring spare socks & Compeed plasters

Double-layer your socks

Tape your feet (zinc oxide)

Drink lots of water

Use fabric plasters to avoid nipple chaf

Apply vaseline to reduce friction

Blisters are the number one reason why people don’t

finish long walking challenges like this. After blisters,

chafing is the biggest problem walkers encounter.

Chafing is caused by body parts rubbing together, or

when clothing rubs against the skin. Common problem

areas include the inner thighs, groin area, armpits

and nipples.

SAFETY & EMERGENCIES

If all else fails, call the emergency

number on your route card.

IF YOU, OR SOMEONE YOU ARE WALKING WITH IS INJURED DURING THE CHALLENGE

The Jimmy Bus will pick up anyone in need of

assistance, for more serious emergencies call

999.

Try and walk to the next checkpoint, however,

don’t injure yourself more in the process.

If unable to carry on use the emergency

contact info on your route cards to contact us

IF YOU GET LOST

Ask a local passer-by for help

Use the maps function on your

smartphone (if you have one!)

Head towards the river and you’ll

soon be back on track

Be aware of other

pedestrians - don't hog

the pavements!

Be careful when crossing the

roads; use the pedestrian

crossings!

Stick together; make sure you

know where everyone in your

group is at all times.
