WALA Winter Newsletter Message from the President Tom Taylor, WALA President, Andover Public Library Volume 26, No. 1 January 2017 Late December and early January are a time of reflection and resolution. Looking back, I believe that WALA had a successful Legislative Luncheon and a fun Holiday Party. Looking ahead, we are gearing up for a tour of the new Mulvane Public Library (3/6), our Spring Symposium “Reaching and Serving Todays’ New Adults” at the WSU Metroplex (4/10) and our annual meeting at Hyde Park (5/18). Just as many New Year’s resolutions focus on health, the health or our libraries and our organization deserve our attention. 2016 was a challenging year for Kansas libraries. We met some of those challenges head on with advocacy. 2017 will have its share of challenges as well. School and college libraries face continued budget cuts. It is up to us as librarians and library supporters to confront these challenges together. WALA can help. And you can help WALA. If you haven’t done so, renew your membership. Tell your colleagues about WALA. Consider serving on the WALA board or running for an office. Let’s make 2017 a successful year. Warmest Regards, Tom [email protected]

Late December and early January are a time of reflection and resolution.

Library Happenings

Wichita Public Library is offering two reading programs this year that you don’t want to miss! The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a reading challenge aimed at improving early literacy skills. Track each book read by coloring in a circle and earn prizes as you reach each milestone along the way. This challenge is open to children aged six and younger. The 2017 Adult Winter Reading Program encourages adults to read about characters and lives that are different from your own. Earn prizes for books read between January 2nd and March 12th, 2017.

WALA Annual Holiday Party

The WALA Annual Holiday Party was especially fun this year. Members and their guests enjoyed a potluck dinner, participated in the annual White Elephant book exchange, and even tried out a new Minute-to-Win-It style candy cane pick-up game. Photos: Joan Wilson from WSU holds up her white elephant book 50 Jobs Worse Than Yours (right). Recent retirees Allan Tanner and Rita Sevart have a conversation after dinner (below, left). Racine Zackula picks up seven candy canes, barely beating her husband Troy and three other play-ers (below, right). Attendees take a group photo with their chosen books in front of the fireplace (bottom). Photos © Sara Butts.

The Wichita Area Library Association (WALA) is an organization of li-

brary professionals started in 1982 in Wichita, Kansas.

WALA is dedicated to supporting libraries and

library employees in the Wichita area and works to

improve library services and access for the Wichita area community of

library users.

Do you know a library staff member who would

enjoy the social interaction and networking

opportunities that WALA offers? Do you have a

coworker who could contribute to our local

organization? Do you have an employee who has

great ideas and loves to be involved with the

community? If so, encourage them to become a

member of the Wichita Area Library Association!

For $15.00 a year, membership for WALA is a

steal! All they need to do is fill out a membership

application and mail it and a check for $15.00

(made payable to WALA) to

Kendra Mork, WALA Treasurer
