Wake-up (Presentation Mode)
1. What type of cells are produced in meiosis?
2. Brown eyes is dominant to blue eyes. A blue eyed woman marries a man who is a carrier. They want to have blue eyed children. How much of a chance do they have of that happening?

pairs
Sex Chromosomes
• 2 sex chromosomes• Typical Female = XX• Typical Male = XY
Autosomes
Autosomes: Any
chromosome that’s not a sex chromosome
•44 Autosomes•22 pairs of Autosomes
What is a Karyotype?Number and appearance of chromosome set
Understanding a KaryotypeHomologous pairs
Sex Chromosomes
Autosomes
How to Read a Karyotype1. Look for homologous pairs in autosomes
How to Read a Karyotype2. Check for 2 sex chromosomes
Nondisjunction
Failure of the chromosomes to
separate properly during
meiosis
Monosomy (Write below Monosomy in chart)
Mono – One
Missing a chromosome
1 instead of 2 chromosomes
Gamete Gamete
Zygote
Turners SyndromeXO-Single X chromosome
Turners Syndrome Symptoms
Watch video linked above to see the many
faces of Turners Syndrome.
Trisomy(Write below Monosomy in chart)
Tri – Three
Having an extra chromosome
3 instead of 2 chromosomes
Gamete Gamete
Zygote
Down SyndromeAka: Trisomy
21
There is an extra 21st
chromosome
Trisomy 21 Symptoms

21.
Klinefelters SyndromeThere is an sex chromosome; XXY

Analyzing Karyotypes
Examine the karyotypes on the back of your notes; using your knowledge identify
the following for each:
a. The sex of the personb. The chromosomal disorder or normal
Klinefelters; Male
Normal Male
Trisomy 21; Female
Karyotype activity
Ask the substitute for the Karyotype activity. On the Wiki, click on the activity link for the day.
Build the Karyotypes by first matching the numbered chromosomes in the correct spot on the karyotype.
Second, find the homologous pair for each numbered chromosome by matching up patterns.
Last, answer the questions on the activity sheet.
