Waikerie Lutheran Primary School is a supportive Christian community, equipping each student for life.

Corner of Peace

Whilst travelling into school today, I was thinking about what I had been planning to write when suddenly this phrase popped into my mind – “Bly stil!” – And with that my whole subject matter changed entirely. This was really strange as I don’t think in other languages (ever) – if I want to say /write something in another language I think it in English first then translate it, but this just popped into my mind in another language – no translation needed!

Those words almost certainly mean nothing to most people who live in this area, as the phrase is a very common Afrikaans instruction. It is often said by parents to children but is also said to those who may be agitated. To the child the parent will be instructing them to keep quiet, but to the agitated person the encouragement would be to keep calm. I really like the literal meaning of the words. The word ‘bly’ is also used to ask a person where they live…. So our phrase would be saying “live still”.

Perhaps these words would then be really good advice to many of us in our hectic day to day life. Our modern society has produced a race of “human doings” rather than “human beings”, and so the quiet and peaceful stillness evades so many.

Doing is certainly important but it can become toxic if it becomes a frenetic series of “doings” without any peace or rest in between – perhaps this is partly why so many are effected by stress related illnesses , as well as “burn out” and “flame out”. Maybe we have to remember to just “be” in peace and tranquillity for a period each day and “live still”. It is in these times that we learn the most and some of the best things in life emerge– as well as some of the most helpful and even innovative ideas.

God himself tells us to “be still and know that I am God” – instructing us just to be, and stop our doing. Indeed we hear that God came to Elijah in stillness and quietness not activity and noise: He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; 12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. 13 So it was, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

God bless

“Ancient Civilisations”

We would like to invite you to help us celebrate our Exhibition on Wednesday, 13th November, 2013 at 6:30pm in the Hall.

This is a culmination of student learning within the transdisciplinary theme: Where we are in place and time. This allows students to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways, to involve parents and the school community and to reflect on their learning throughout the IB Primary Years Programme.

We would love you to come along!

The 6/7 Class

In the Classroom - Year 2/3 For their summative assessment task in the “Working Together” Unit of Inquiry, the Year 2/3 class designed board games to show their understanding of how people and communities need to work together to meet needs and achieve goals. They had lots of fun playing each other’s games and learning bout how our needs are met and goals in life are achieved.

Council Corner Our School Council has discussed the benefits on keeping our community informed about business passed through School Council meetings. Items from the previous two meetings have been:

Reviewing and ratifying the anti-bullying policy, behaviour management policy and underlying teacher guide.

Approving $12,000 dollars in spending to continue to improve our school’s ICT network. A new server is a large cost of this upgrade.

THANK YOU from the WLPS Parents & Friends The Parents and Friends Committee would like to extend a sincere thank you to the school and wider community for the donations and support shown towards our Wine & Food Festival fundraiser this year. It is true that ‘many hands make light work’ and this event is certainly testament to that!!!

The positive response, feedback and support for our event again this year has been astounding and very humbling and we can all be proud of its success. The guests in attendance thoroughly enjoyed the live entertainment and local produce that was on offer.

We have certainly been blessed in the funds raised for our school which definitely exceeded our expectations and are a positive bonus to the community event we are able to provide.

Photos of the event have been posted on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/wlpswineandfood. Stay tuned for updates on the next event......

Please accept our heartfelt thanks and appreciation.

NAPLAN SUMMARY

National NAPLAN results were held up this year due to a printing error in the individual summary pages. Because of our small year levels that sit the tests, these individual results are crucial to our school interpreting the data. Below is a summary of the data as the staff have analysed:

The WLPS Year 3 group of students is above the national average in all areas apart from numeracy. We look forward to tracking their results in Year 5 and 7 to be able to see the students’ growth (our schools progress) over the next four years.

The WLPS Year 5 group of students have closed the gap between the national average and their class average in 3 of the 6 areas. For the average Year 5 student, students averaged expected growth (developed in line with their peers) in 3 of the areas tested, and accelerated their learning (exceptional growth) in the other 3 areas.

The Year 5 class demonstrated accelerated learning (exceptional growth) in:

Reading - 70% of Year 5

Writing - 50% of Year 5

Spelling - 40% of Year 5

Grammar - 20% of Year 5

Numeracy - 50% of Year 5

Out of the 50 tests sat, only 6 results displayed minimal growth. This typically is your students that ‘had a bad day’ on testing day. Also students who are operating at a high academic level will naturally experience less growth in their learning.

The WLPS Year 7 group of students have finished their time at WLPS above the national average. On the website you will not find a class average as our class group is too small to display an average. Our data has been put together by the school from the individual summary pages. For the average Year 7 students averaged expected growth (developed in line with their peers) in 3 of the areas tested, and accelerated their learning (exceptional growth) in the other 3 areas.

The Year 7 class demonstrated exceptional growth in:

Reading - 60% of Year 7

Writing - 80% of Year 7

Spelling - 20% of Year 7

Grammar - 60% of Year 7

Numeracy - 40% of Year 7

Out of the 25 tests sat, only 3 results displayed minimal growth. This typically is your students that ‘had a bad day’ on testing day. Also students who are operating at a high academic level will naturally experience less growth in their learning.

In all three year levels, numeracy is the subject area where our school displays most disparity with the national average. As a school wide focus for 2014, we are targeting this area for development. In all three year levels, reading and writing is where we have displayed the most positive growth, reflecting our school wide focus on literacy in the past few years.
