Waikerie Lutheran Primary School is a supportive Christ-centred community, equipping each student for life.
Message from the Principal ‘Waikerie Lutheran Primary School is a supportive Christ
centred community equipping each student for life’
Life is a rollercoaster; life is like a box of chocolates; such is life
and life goes on.
But does life go on? It seems to be monotonous at times,
mundane and laborious. Sometimes there are absolute highs
and at other times life sapping lows and then there
appears to be a dull thud to every life – the end. So is there more?
Well, if you believe in a life after death, you are a spiritual person. At this
school we are also spiritual, as we teach our students the about the Triune
God. For me personally, when life throws me those life zapping moments, or
those mundane and laborious tasks, it is God calling me to look to him. Christ
gives hope to all situations, as his message is “I am with you always, to the very
end of the age” (Matthew 28:20).
Like the saying ‘life doesn’t end when you’re 40’, we are happy to boast as a
Lutheran school that ‘life doesn’t end when you die’.
A Mission Statement
A mission statement provides a goal for an organisation. We set high goals so
that we might strive for excellence. Thank you for reading along this term. It
has helped me as principal to focus on our goals, as much as Chapel
messages have helped our staff and students focus as well.
Blessings on your week and holidays,
Adam Borgas

Phonetic Instruction Results at WLPS
This year’s NAPLAN literacy scores for WLPS are particularly significant. For the Year 5
and Year 7 students, these NAPLAN scores measure a period of time where we have
particularly focussed our approach to teaching literacy using a purely phonetic
approach.
Below is a table using the raw NAPLAN data for spelling as it is the area that will best
show progress in phonetic instruction. For the two year period measured from when
the Year Five students (this year) were in Year 3 (in 2014), average growth is known na-
tionally to be 1.5 bands. No matter what our student’s ability, our results indicate all of
the Year 5 students grew at this average rate or better. Some students were able to
‘catch-up’ to their peers by doubling the expected growth rate!
So why the switch to SSP?
Continuously monitoring student progress is a critical part of the SSP program. It allows
us to collect whole school data every five weeks. This is important to be able to give
written feedback on a more continuous basis.
SSP is more than a spelling program. It allows us to work on the skills of processing
speed, working memory and more. It is an integrated approach to Literacy teaching,
much broader than simply a spelling lesson. It begins explicitly teaching speaking and
listening skills and empowers learners by teaching them how to ‘crack the code’ of the
English language. Students have been empowered by the focus on sentence level
writing and reading this year and teachers believe that student attitudes to reading
and writing have greatly improved (this also shows through work samples). Our NAPLAN
results demonstrate above the national average in the majority of literacy areas!
How is the SSP going then?
One of the positive aspects of the program is seeing students work through the colours
at their own pace, always receiving instruction targeted to their needs. In Term 1 Week
2, you can see where the students started as a group. In Term 3, you can see the cur-
rent progress of our students is above our expectations! By Term 4 we hope that again
students will be tested and in the F-2 levels we can use PM reading testing to give us an
idea of their reading progress.
We will also be keen to see our 2017 NAPLAN results which will give us a more specific
read on how the SSP program is performing.
