Still time to plant summer forage cropsWith a dry summer predicted, many farmers will be wondering if they will have enough feed to see them through

DairyNZ’s senior developer feed and farm systems, Kim Mashlan says even though sowing time is nearly over, there is still time to plant crops that will provide a valuable summer feed buffer in some areas.

“There are still some crops that can be planted between now and early December like sweet sudan grass, sorghum-sudan grass hybrids, and greenfeed maize. These maintain relatively high levels of production during hot and dry conditions and can reduce the risk of having inadequate forage during the summer.

“Sudan grass and sorghum-sudan grass hybrids are primarily used for grazing and cutting because of their high regrowth potential. They regrow faster than forage sorghum and recover quickly after grazing or cutting. Warm soil temperatures, 17 degrees celsius and rising, are required for germination.”

Sorghums are known for being drought tolerant. They absorb water more efficiently because they have twice as many secondary roots per unit of primary root as maize and have half as much leaf area and a waxier leaf surface — traits that help withstand drought and provide a source of feed during summer pasture shortages.

Sudan and sorghum-sudan grass can be grazed 35-45 days after planting, when the crop reaches the minimum height of 0.8-1.2 metres recommended. It will normally be ready for a second

cutting or grazing within 28-35 days at 0.8 metres. Intake should be restricted to 30-40 percent of diet.

The quality and feed value drop drastically once the grass begins to mature to greater than 1.4 metres in height. To maximise quality, feed when the crop is between 0.8-1.0 metres in height.

Greenfeed maize can yield large quantities of green fodder per hectare relative to most other alternative summer fodder crops and summer pasture.

It has an energy content of around 10-10.5 MJME/kgDM and crude protein of 8-12 percent. It can be cut and carried to the herd or break fed. The summer green feed option is not suitable for silage.

Intake should be restricted to 25-50 percent of diet. It can be planted once soil temperature is 10 degrees celsius and rising and greenfed from 42-56 days of planting.

Nitrate poisoning is a potential issue with any crop that grows rapidly, has been drought stressed, or has been frosted. Crops should be sampled and analysed before grazing/cutting if nitrate buildup is suspected.

Prussic acid poisoning is a concern if feeding sudan grass and sorghum-sudan grass hybrids to dairy cows. As the danger is highest in early growth stages and after frosting, farmers should not graze or green cut until the crop is greater than 0.8 metres high

and spray out paddocks before autumn frosts or regrassing.

“As sudan grass is low in sulphur, farmers should check pasture sulphur levels — if low, less than 0.25 percent, sulphur supplementation is recommended.

“Farmers should contact their local veterinarian if they have concerns about nitrate or prussic acid poisoning,” said Kim.

Luck would have it that both had connections to Cambridge New Zealand, so when they returned

from their travels, they eventually settled there on a dairy farm, contract milking 485 cows.

Paul moved to Cambridge from Australia with his family when he was 13

for his father’s work and has a Bachelor of Agricultural Commerce from Lincoln University. Kate grew up in Canterbury and obtained a Bachelor of Science from Canterbury University as well as a postgraduate Diploma in Teaching from Waikato University. “I did about two and a half years of travelling after

university working on farms and driving tractors. At the time I was working at a hostel and I met Kate through a mutual friend. She just happened to be from New Zealand and just happened to be living in Cambridge. She was working for LIC doing their DNA testing. It’s a small world,” said Paul.

It was a love of motocross that originally got him into the agricultural industry. He began milking when he was younger to earn money to fund his hobby.

During his high school years Paul had a number of friends that came from farming backgrounds. He says seeing that way of life and the opportunity to have a really good family lifestyle motivated him to continue with farming as a career.

“The farmer dads were the ones that always seemed to be around to coach the teams and come to all the rugby games and to take us to motocross. My dad worked in town. He was very successful but he would get home late and leave really early.”

When he started his own family he wanted to have more time with his children two-year-old Rupert and one-year-old William.

“Kate took time off to have our first child and then our second one came quite soon after that. So she now works on the farm and does all the books.”

Paul says a driving factor in his career choice was having the opportunity for Kate not to have to work in town.

“It’s a lifestyle option where I can be there and Kate doesn’t have to work

as much so someone is always with the kids.”

The unique community amongst farmers is another aspect the couple enjoy.

“Farming is quite unique because everyone is trying to help one another. It’s not like other businesses where you are the competition. Everyone works together and if someone comes up with an idea they share it. I’m always chatting to other people about what they are getting up to.

“There is a good supportive community. You’ve got discussion groups and everyone is working together.”

He says because he hasn’t come from a farming background he has had to learn everything from the beginning.

“Everything I know I’ve learnt off other people or off the Dairy NZ website. If I don’t know something I will ask people or read about it. I’ve got no preconceived ideas or old ways of doing things and I

think that has really helped. If you want to get ahead that’s the way to do it. Just read about it and keep trying to improve yourself and keep learning.”

The couple are heavily involved with the Dairy Industry Awards and won the 2015 Waikato Farm Managers of the Year award.

“The awards have been great,” Paul says. “I entered once as a trainee and I came second for Waikato and then we have entered three more times as managers and the third time we won.

“Even the times we didn’t win I found it really beneficial. You can gain a lot of knowledge when the judges give you feedback.

“There is also the networking side of things. The people that are usually entering these awards are young like minded go ahead people. When we went to the nationals we mixed with 11 other regional winners’ groups and just meeting all those guys, we all got on so

well just because they have the same interest and mind set and most of them had young kids. We are all going through the same process and there were quite a few farming differences between regions which was interesting.”

Next year Paul is considering entering again in a different category and together he and Kate have goals of herd and land ownership.

Entries are now being accepted in the 2016 New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards, including the New Zealand Share Farmer of the Year, New Zealand Dairy Manager of the Year and New Zealand Dairy Trainee of the Year competitions.

Deep in the heart of the Dordogne, Perigord Noir, in south-western France, writer Paul Campbell visited an old friend’s sprawling chateau, sited among 50 acres of rolling land, part forest and part walnut plantation. It wasn’t long before he was . . .

I arrived to find my pal, Pierre, with a finger badly crushed in an accident involving a tractor and a tree, as he

inspected his walnut farm. He greeted my arrival with an appeal for help. It was harvest time, and his ability to help out was rather limited.

I’ve had a Kiwi upbringing, harvesting potatoes and kumaras on school holiday jobs, scrub cutting, tractor-driving, milking on an uncle’s’ farm. Walnuts? Shouldn’t be a problem.

That’s when Pierre mentioned his 700 trees and a 10 tonne harvest.

Ah well, nothing ventured, nothing gained. So after waiting for the optimum ripening date required, I soon found myself the man of the moment.

But expectations of overseeing a host of seasonal workers picking walnuts from the ground beneath the trees were soon dispelled.

First job off the rank was mowing the verdant grass between each lane of trees to a close crop, a task that took a couple of days on a familiar steed — a Massey Ferguson tractor-mower.

Then the cavalry arrived in the form of some mechanised locals. The old hand-picking days were long gone, and in their place was another tractor with a contraption on the PTO that clamped onto each tree trunk in turn and simulated an earthquake. Suddenly it was raining walnuts, shaken from the husks and piling up below the trees,

A man with a powerful version of a leaf-blower then marshalled the nuts into windrows, and then another entered aboard a giant vacuum cleaner on wheels. Another day and a half of roaring machines then saw a 10-tonne truck loaded to the brim and heading for a washing and grading plant nearby.

A subsequent wander through the trees turned up many a basket of overlooked nuts, as well as some unwanted chestnuts that would go into the chateau’s autumn and winter larder. And it was job tidy. Perigord hosts thousands of walnut trees and the history of their produce dates back many thousands of years to the cave dwellers who once inhabited the rocky cliffsides of the area, and whose

cave art today is a huge tourist draw.Peasants of mediaeval times paid their debts in nuts, or walnut oil, which was traded afar afield as Holland, Germany and Britain following the October — November harvest. The region today boasts the Ecomusee de la Noix, that salutes the walnut’s place in the history of the region’s commerce.

From Pierre, over a glass or two of post-harvest vin du noix — a liqueur made from leaves and nuts steeped in alcohol, I learned that locals attribute health and longevity to the nut which boasts cholesterol-lowering properties and is high in potassium, zinc, copper and magnesium.

“My papa was originally a Dally gumdigger and had a billiard hall in town. At

the Tinopai slipway he had a clinker dinghy with a seagull motor. That was my introduction to the sea — you didn’t have to go far to catch big fish and he taught me a lot,” said Zane.

Zane married Justine Jeffs who also holidayed at Tinopai at her family bach in front of the Peko’s and the couple now have three daughters. He worked in logistics as well as on a pilot boat at the Ports of Auckland. He applied for a position at Sanford’s to manage their greenshell mussel farms and got the job. “Sanford’s had just purchased the Marlborough Mussel Company,”

said Zane. “Mussels are interesting to work with. The mussel seed is called spat and we have three main sources to get this. The first is on seaweed which floats in the water at Ninety Mile beach with spat attached.

“It washes up on the beach and collectors gather, sort and send it to us to grow out. We hang weighted fluffy rope in the water and wild spat settles on it and grows at Golden Bay in the South Island. Our third source is from Sanford’s mussel hatchery in Nelson.”

The spat it is left to grow to 5-7mm and then the juvenile mussels are stripped and thinned out. This is called inter-seeding. “Over the life of the mussel this happens three more times

before harvest at 90 — 100mm. The trick to good mussel farming is having all the mussels on the line near the same size.

“Our mussel operations are geographically spread from Kaitaia to Stewart Island. There are several operations involving partnerships with Iwi and private growers. Our farms range from two to 2695 hectares. Sanford’s largest farm in Pegasus Bay is still under construction.”

There are many challenges in the industry including la Nina and el Nino weather patterns.

“The weather has a big impact on the upwelling of nutrients for the crops as they are filter feeders. We study this closely and what we are finding is if it’s an el Nino we have strong mussel growth and if we have a la Nina we have slower growth. I am expecting that this season will be a bumper crop as we are going into a strong El Nino.

“Another challenge is rainfall. We use a world class sampling programme that is based on monitoring rainfall and river flows. We are continually testing water quality.

“There is a lot of pressure when it rains as our harvesting areas may be temporarily shut due to extensive nutrient runoff from the land which the mussels feed on.”

When the crops are harvested they are sent to Sanford plants in Havelock and Tauranga. Both factories are capable of processing 18,000 tons per annum.

The mussel industry is good for rural communities which don’t traditionally have a lot of job options for local people.

The mussels get graded for size, then go through a cooking process where the shell opens slightly and the byssus thread is pulled out by rollers.

They then go to the automatic opening machine leaving the half shell with meat. The mussel is frozen and a water glaze is added.

It then goes to a weigh machine which sorts to optimum weight for packing. The mussels are then put into the cold store for shipping to distribution centres or customers.

“Much of the final product is sold to international markets with the majority going to the United States. The future

of our industry is looking great. Seafood is an important contributor to the export sector and aquaculture is a big part of that. Sanford has access to good water space for growing mussels.

“Mussels are full of protein and are nutritious. The greenshell species are the only ones that have lyprinol content which is good for the joints. They have great medicinal properties and are native to New Zealand.

“It’s a sustainable industry. What we grow — we harvest. I believe we are a very green industry — mussels don’t pollute the water, they improve its quality.”

Dear Fonterra Shareholder,

A special resolution to change the constitution of Fonterra reducing the size of the current board from 13 to nine by March 31, 2016 is the subject of a Notice of Motion at the annual meeting of shareholders of Fonterra Cooperative Group Limited on November 25, 2015.

You will have heard by now the Council does not support this proposal. We are disappointed but not surprised by their stance. For clarity, their position does not stop the proposal going forward for a shareholder vote. If the proposal was successful they would then have the option to rescind their stance.

We have been very careful and deliberate to take the politics out of what we are doing. So for that reason both of us have made it clear we will not seek election during the downsizing process ourselves and have not targeted individual directors. Our proposal is all about getting a fitter, faster and higher performing Fonterra, something we all desperately want. That improvement has to start at the very top.

Farmers have always elected their cooperative’s board and they have shown over time to be very responsible with their vote. The only difference this time is that they will be electing all six farmer directors at one time. We do not see this as a risk to Fonterra.

Our primary objective in this proposal has been to avoid targeting any individual director. The board is currently made up of nine elected directors and four appointed. We propose all elected directors be elected at the same time. This method is the only methodology we can see which avoids disadvantaging individual directors who may have recently been elected or those who are retiring by rotation. It also is the only method which achieves a quick, clean result.

Following such an election there will be at least four appointed directors for continuity. Any alternative mechanism which did not elect all the new number of elected directors at the same time would be either unfair or it would take at least three years – or most likely both. Directors will be conflicted and reluctant to put their personal positions at risk even although they know it is in the best interests of the cooperative.

Both of us are experienced directors not just with Fonterra but outside that company. We know how board dynamics work. On the outside looking in we can see weaknesses in the current board structure and we firmly believe that is holding Fonterra back from fulfilling the promise it showed when it was formed. Look at Air New Zealand. The Government bailed it out for nearly a billion dollars at about the same time that Fonterra was formed. At that time it had a board of 13 directors and the company had lost its way. Today it has a board of 7 and it is one of our high performing international companies. That is not a coincidence.

3 There is no accountability There is no accountability

Over the years at election time we often get the "who do I vote for" call. It’s a reasonable call because with a large group no one knows who's performing. Imagine if each Fonterra director spoke for two minutes on each item...a very long meeting would ensue. So what happens in a group of this size is that some stay quiet, some dominate and some feel alienated. With a smaller board that becomes easier......they are all accountable. Those who are not performing or out of their depth will be quickly identifiable and typically they move on. That's the dynamic of a smaller group.

It has always been difficult to attract good external directors to a cooperative company. That's driven more out of perception than reality. But it gets harder when they see a board of 13. That's something they are not used to and don't support. And remember - GOOD appointed directors have choice around which board/s they sit on. We are competing for their services. As an aside we have had unsolicited support from some of these people who have left the Board. The word on the street is that this is currently the case particularly as there is a strong view around why Ralph Norris is going and he rightly commands huge respect in the Australasian business community.

Once again this is a totally normal and predictable behaviour in a larger group. This can deliver undue power to the Chair and also to a politically motivated executive. We are talking divide and rule.

Our Constitution is the domain of the owners, not the board. We as shareholders have the absolute right to review it and change it. To slow down a review of the size of the board in order to have another six months of consultation is perplexing and inconsistent and is being used as an excuse only when it suits. How much consultation was there on PKE or spending large capital sums which led to recent credit downgrades? Would the Council have been so supportive of the farmer loans had they realised this consequence? These are just two recent examples of zero consultation on important issues and there are many more.

Fonterra has three mantra's it pushes very hard - Value, Volume and Velocity. For those principles to succeed they need to be led from the top but the three-year old governance review is hardly an example of velocity! When the board looks at its own functions it takes over three years while a review of staff positions takes six months and results in over 700 redundancies. What kind of message is the board’s behaviour sending to staff?

Any further delay in reducing the size of the board means we’ll get more consultation, more reviews, more delays and more costs while the most important change of all gets put off again.

Our proposal is a tangible move we can make right now to improve the performance of the cooperative. No delays, no putting it off. Sorted by the end of March. Counting the cost of schoolIt is never too soon to start planning for education, and while 2015 heads towards Christmas and long summer holidays, many rural households will also be looking towards the new school year, with perhaps young ones just staring at local schools, or older ones looking at college further afield.

On the heel of holidays, back to school can be an exciting time, but costs can also bring stress and strain on the family budget.

Enrolment fees, uniforms, transport, stationery, schoolbags, even provision of lunches — it all adds up.

Budget advisors are well aware that some families may find it difficult to avoid tension at this time. Good advice is to make back-to-school preparations fun and get the family involved, making a fun atmosphere so that budgeting and saving is an enjoyable activity.

It also creates an awareness of the costs associated with everyday items among children and contributes towards a sense of responsibility.

In fact, organisation is key, and writing lists is a great way to identify costs and by being organised before you head off to the Warehouse Stationery or other outlets, you’re less likely to fall into the overspending trap. Make sure you

have your list of the new school year needs. Identify the most important requirements — what is needed now, and what perhaps can be postponed until later in the year — for instance, sporting clothing and equipment might wait until the winter season comes around.

And another good tip is to make an inventory of what is already in the family. Perhaps an older sibling can pass on books or other items that may serve a ‘second term.’ rather than being bought new.

Check around — there might be pens and pads around the house that can go in the schoolbag. The cost of education cannot be taken lightly in New Zealand households, with state education perhaps costing the average parent nearly $35,000. Kiwi parents would pay about $16,000 for eight-year primary school state education and more than $18,000 for the secondary school years.

Make the right startSo you have the means to invest in a new property? There is an essential consideration that is the first step to ensuring that the experience is a good one, and that is obtaining a LIM report — a Land Information Memoranda.

It’s a document that, by law, a council has to provide for any property within its district within 10 days of request.

Anyone can request a LIM about any property and in fact you do not have to be the owner, or potential purchaser.

The council that covers the area that the property is in will have a file containing information relating to that house. It is a summary of the content in this file that is contained in the LIM.

A LIM can include a lot, or a very small amount of information, depending on the history of the property, where it is, and when and how often there has been council involvement with the property.

Officially a LIM is a document produced by a territorial authority that contains a summary of any relevant current and historical information held by the council about a particular piece of land or property. If you are putting in an offer on a property, you should make a satisfactory LIM report a condition of the sale.

The document is very useful in helping you decide whether the land is worth purchasing. You can determine whether the property has permits for all its building work, what zoning it has,

whether it is free from any restrictions, what proposed local developments may affect the property, and whether the intended use of the land is feasible.

A LIM may contain all sorts of information that can impact significantly on your perception of a property value.

Husband it and it will grow our food, our fuel and our shelter and surround us with beauty. Abuse it and the soil will collapse and die, taking humanity with it.”

It appears that producers around the world are engaged in an orgy of soil destruction, so intense, that according to the United Nations Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, initiated in 2001, the world on average has just 60 years left of

growing crops. To keep up with global demand, the UN estimates 6 million hectares of new farmland will be needed every year. Instead, 12 million hectares a year are lost through soil degradation. We wreck it and then move on trashing rainforests and other precious habitat as we go.

Soil is a magical substance, a living system that transforms the materials it encounters, making them available to plants. A handful of healthy soil contains more microorganisms than all the people living on earth.

The techniques of agro-chemical production that were supposed to feed the world now threaten us with starvation and malnutrition not to mention the serious health problems coming from the GM foods. In hindsight, the chemical age although initially looking good, has not done life on our planet any favours, in fact it has demineralised our soils resulting in nutrient de� cient food which in turn is increasing disease within all form of life on our planet.

United Nations FAO has chosen 2015 as the International Year of Soils. Soil is the largest pool of organic carbon essential for mitigating and adapting climate change. In an era of water scarcity, soils are fundamental for their appropriate storage of water and its distribution. Soil micro-organisms boost soil’s ability to absorb carbon and mitigate deserti� cation.

According to FAO Director-General Jose Graziano de Silva, it can take up to 1000 years to form one centimetre of topsoil. He urged investment in sustainable soil management saying that

it would be cheaper than restoration. Soil sustainability is de� nitely the best option; however, providing degraded soil still contains some carbon, restoration is possible through Agrissentials method and recipe of multi mineral, microbial-rich fertilisers. The formula is for building humus (carbon) in the soil and at the same time providing nutrient to plants, animals and people. In trials on topsoils of some 50mm deep on a clay base, in Ruawai, Dargaville, over an eight year period, the topsoil increased to a depth of 250mm and deeper in some areas of that dairy farm.

Technology targets water temperaturesHigh groundwater temperatures are a common problem for the dairy farmers who attended an open day at Meddo Farm to view an innovative new milk chilling system.

Around ten groups of local farmers came to see the Vari-COOL chilling system designed by Hamilton based refrigeration specialist, Coolsense, and part-funded by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority. The smartplant snap chills milk, but does so more efficiently, reducing power consumption and also producing hot water as a by-product.

Farm owner, Hans Geessink installed the Vari-COOL system in May after he found a new water source to his farm was delivering water at 26 degrees Celsius — six degrees higher than his previous supply. It meant he could no longer comply with current milk chilling standards, or with the proposed

regulations coming into effect from mid-2016, which will require milk to be chilled to 6 degrees Celsius within two hours of milking completion.

Coolsense general manager Allan Steele, says all the farmers who attended Friday’s open day were facing the same problem of high groundwater temperatures and would need to take action, some requiring an upgrade of their milk chilling systems.

Meddo Farm’s Vari-COOL milk chilling system is one of ECCA’s technology demonstration projects, a programme which contributes to the cost of demonstrating energy saving technology not yet widely adopted in New Zealand. ECCA Projects and Relations Manager Kirk Archibald, says high ground

water temperatures are a problem for many dairy farmers, particularly in the Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Northland. He says the Vari-COOL system offers a solution, while also saving on energy costs.

“It’s expensive to run a dairy farm, and the average New Zealand dairy farm spends over $20,000 a year on electricity,” Mr Archibald says. “So any technology that helps reduce this spend is a big bonus for farmers.”

He says energy is a controllable cost and makes up around five percent of the cost of running a farm.

“If you can reduce your energy spend the savings can be ploughed back into the farm or used in leaner months to keep the farm going.”

The older petrolheads talk in hushed tones to a new generation of the mighty Falcons and Commodores of yesteryear; of the coming of the Valiant Chargers, and the season of the mighty Godzilla Skyline.

The thing is, this could be the last year of the great rivalry between the red and blue — at least as we know it. In the 12-hour endurance race which is a curtain raiser to the big day, Nissan’s GT-R blitzed past in the final laps to steal the crown — from a podium made up of an Aston and a Bentley. Audi came fourth. In the main event, too, the other marques are showing their fangs, with Volvo pipped for a podium place. With Commodore and Falcon now facing big changes, what will 2016 look like?

Holden are keeping tight lipped, but in the meantime they are not letting the Commodore go quietly into the twilight. Their ferocious Redline model V8s have been a revelation, spurring arch-rivals FPV to make their own swansong just as manic. Now Holden have released a special edition of their usually tamer, calm and comfy V6, dubbing it the Storm.

The Holden Commodore SV6 Storm ups the ante in the engine department, packing a 210 Kw, 3.6 litre direct-

injection V6, delivering, interestingly, more power than some of those old V8 ‘commies’ did back in the day. This mill is mated to a six speed transmission, an automatic with active select technology for crisp, rapid shifting.

In line with some of that classic Commodore racing pedigree, the Storm features a limited slip diff as well, which may show a little of Holden’s intent. You could certainly tow a lot with the 350Nm of torque on tap, but it’s more likely that you’d like to enjoy seeing

what such power can do unleashed on the open road. What’s best about the Storm, though is its price. Following up on a very successful, limited-run Storm edition of the Commodore in 2014, the Holden management decided to make this model even more enticing. So as well as design tweaks such as custom red stitching on the upholstery, fog lights and satnav, the Storm only costs marginally more than its standard V6 counterpart. Many will consider this over the V6 Calais in the lineup.

Ford and Holden battle it out each year on the hallowed tarmac of the mountain, in a struggle which seems as old as time.

In the world of off-road vehicles, there’s always room for more innovation.

Adding more power can only push a machine so far in terms of practicality, before it gets claimed by the hardcore, dune-busting gearheads at the sports end of the spectrum. Adding utility, however — that’s another story. Yamaha managed to find a way to shoehorn in a little extra practicality when they released their three-seater Viking UTV a few years back. With the appeal of a helmet-free ‘cage’ for farm work, a big load tray and seating for three burly blokes (or two and the dog), the Viking stood out with a point of difference to its rivals. After all, many hands make light work.

Three seats also meant that hunters and anglers could bring a whole party, not just have to choose one of their mates and leave the rest cold. Now, some other UTV manufacturers have built extended frame versions of their machines already, offering four seats to play with. Some have even added a bit more pep to the power plant to handle the extra weight. But when Yamaha brought out the Viking VI (as in a Roman six, to mix your ancient cultures), they did more than just create a stretched off-road limo. The engineering process involved was far more complicated than simply ‘cut, weld, bolt on seats, have a drink to celebrate’. While the Viking VI uses the same 686cc single overhead

cam motor as its three seat counterpart, there is no lack of get up and go. The longer wheelbase would mean a hard time turning on a machine without power steering, but the Viking’s assisted system makes the wheel feel precise, even at low speeds.

Locking diffs and ample torque mean that, despite its size the Viking handles obstacles well, and don’t let the space between the wheels fool you — it won’t bottom out like a passenger car, even with six on board.

The passenger has come first here, with a completely redesigned roll cage for safety, plenty of room on every seat to avoid the ‘not in the middle’ arguments we remember from dad’s Valiant, and a comfortable ride thanks to model-specific Maxxis tyres, built just to handle the extra weight.

Most importantly for summer, the Viking VI has a total of eight cup holders — just the ticket when you’ve got six people to the job site or the camp site. While many people need a UTV as a bigger brother to the old trusty quad, those who really want a go-anywhere alternative to the ute should definitely take a look at this voluminous, trail-ready Yamaha. After all, more seating can easily become more storage — look at the double cab utes on the road as an example!

Special resolutionFarmers of New Zealand supports highly respected dairy leader and former Fonterra Director Greg Gent in sponsoring a special resolution to change the constitution of Fonterra reducing the size of the current board from thirteen to nine by 31 March 2016.

This proposed Notice of Motion is up for discussion and resolution at the annual meeting of shareholders of Fonterra Cooperative Group Limited scheduled to be held on 25 November 2015. The reported response by Fonterra Chairman John Wilson hitting back with, “We need to have a constructive and genuine consultation within the shareholder base, not have imposed a solution by two of our farmers on the back of an envelope”, demonstrates the typical father and mother stance that, we know best and we just can’t have an idea like this coming from out of the blue and not in our control.

Chairman Wilson should not be so disrespectful or dismissive of Greg Gent. Greg is a director of a number of high profile New Zealand companies, an ex-chairman of the Northland and Kiwi Dairy Companies and played an integral part in the setting up of the Fonterra structure,

which was not easy. The Gent proposition seeks shareholder support to reduce the size of the board and achieve a leaner and fitter Fonterra, making the Fonterra Cooperative more globally competitive and successful. As supplying shareholders our businesses and livelihoods depend on that.

What Chairman Wilson proposes as an alternative is that they simply knock up a few options in a discussion document that they like or can live with and then undertake consultation with shareholders which will guarantee that board members and the shareholders council end their preferred solution. It is called self-preservation.

Remember the board has a number of ex-shareholder council members and the council itself has no doubt many aspiring directors currently in its ranks. Chairman John Wilson’s criticism of this

resolution is in fact contrary to what the board previously promised. The chairman fails to disclose in his media release that the board’s stated position in the 2012 notice of meeting assured suppliers that the board and Fonterra’s Council had initiated a review to consider development of Fonterra’s governance and representation to meet the challenges of the coming decade. Over the last three years John Wilson and his board have not produced any review options to shareholders and therefore not met their obligations to shareholders.

Shareholders must question why highly respected ex-directors are taking this action. They also must ask themselves why high profile independent directors are choosing to stand down from the board. Such behaviour may be symptomatic of potential issues of concern around the board table. The proposal to reduce the number of directors does not target any directors on the current board. The process has been designed to make sure that shareholders retain the absolute power to elect the candidates they regard as the best candidates for the job.

The NZ Institute of Directors in publishing The Four Pillars of Governance Best Practice for New Zealand Directors, states that a board composition is a direct contributor to board performance, achieving a balance of skills and experience on the board is a key goal. Diversity on a board is vital but should always be approached through the lens of demonstrated competence. Farmers of New Zealand believes that both the size of the board and the current mix

of expertise around the board needs urgent consideration.

We do not believe the current composition is even close to being appropriate to govern a large global processor and marketer of food products.

It is also important to understand that after a certain period time a board can become comfortable with one another.

While this can be a sign of seamless operations, it can also be an early sign of complacency. Recruiting new board members is an important way to introduce new thought and perspective to board debates while avoiding groupthink and related risks. Succession planning is inexorably linked to board composition.

The NZ Institute of Directors makes the point that the interests of shareholders will be best served if its board acts with maximum efficiency and effectiveness. A Board that is too large may not give its members the opportunity of participating in discussions and decisions to the best of their ability.

We believe thirteen directors is far too many. The notice of motion is timely and well considered. If this action had not occurred what we believe to be a critical debate would not be taking place.

We thank Greg Gent’s and Colin Armer’s courage of conviction and professionalism bringing this issue to shareholders. It is timely to remind Fonterra’s Chairman John Wilson, the board, and the shareholder council not to underestimate the intelligence of Fonterra’s shareholder suppliers, to consider and form their own opinion regarding this very important notice of motion to downsize Fonterra’s board.

Finding the best in dairyingThe dairy industry is looking for the top player in the industry through the 2016 New Zealand Dairy Manager of the Year competition.

New entry criteria in the contest means dairy farm workers with a variety of backgrounds, experience and skills are able to enter.

Entries are now being accepted in the Dairy Manager competition, as well as the 2016 New Zealand Share Farmer of the Year and the 2016 New Zealand Dairy Trainee of the Year competitions. All entries are being received and close on November 30.

New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards General Manager Chris Keeping says the entry criteria changes have broadened the scope of potential entrants in the Dairy Manager of the Year competition. “We made the entry changes as some

good people were missing out on being able to participate in the dairy awards programme as they were either too old, too experienced or were not in the right position to enter. We’ve made it a lot more accommodating and that means a wide variety of potential dairy farm workers are now eligible to enter the Dairy Manager competition.”

Mrs Keeping says farm managers, assistant farm managers, senior herd managers, production managers, herd managers, and 2ICs could all be eligible to enter.

To be eligible entrants need to be employed full time on a dairy farm on an individual employment contract (not

self-employed), and have no equity in the farm business.

“It’ll be really interesting for our judges as an entrant could be new to the industry — but have maturity and other work experiences — or have been in the industry for some years.”

The Dairy Manager of the Year competition also allows for entrants to play to a particular strength in a Power Play section. “The Power Play is worth 20% and enables entrants to choose a

topic from five options to present on. It recognises that some entrants may have a greater responsibility or strength in one aspect of the farm business as compared to others.”

Stock feed not to blameThe dairy industry has moved to distance itself from concerns that it is indirectly responsible for environmental damage as a result of sourcing palm kernel as stock feed.

Federated Farmers says it agrees with Greenpeace and other groups about the devastation and environmental impact of forest fires that have burned for more than three weeks across Indonesia.

However, while the land may be being cleared for planting the it says the use of Palm Kernel Expeller (PKE) as a supplementary feed source for dairy cows is not to blame.“It’s important to remember that PKE is not the reason for these fires or tropical deforestation. It is a by-product of the extraction of palm oil and palm kernel oil which would otherwise be treated as waste,” says Federated Farmers Dairy Industry Chair Andrew Hoggard. “Dairy farmers are taking this

waste product and making use of it as a supplementary food source, used mainly as an alternative to pasture during adverse weather such as droughts, to maintain the welfare of herds and the productivity of New Zealand’s vital ly impor tant dairy industry.”

Greenpeace has been attacking Fonterra with allegations linking them to fires through the deforestation of rainforests and peatland for PKE — claims which

ignore both the core product being sought (palm oil) and the realities of Fonterra’s procurement strategy.
