At Wagstaff Way, we provide an opportunity for service users in large residential care environments to move on to a smaller service in a transition towards an independent lifestyle within the community.

Opened in 2009, Wagstaff Way offers a homely environment for four female service users living with autism. We aim to offer a transition phase for service users who, at some point in the future, could be living independently in the community.

At Wagstaff Way, we promote the rights to freedom, independence and choice of our service users as individual citizens and encourage full involvement within the local community. We create an environment that provides

more opportunities to empower the independence of each person. One of our service users works independently and walks to the village for her paper.

Outdoor spaceOur large garden allows our service users to feel a sense of freedom and gives them the opportunity to explore horticulture and grow their own plants and flowers. Service users at Wagstaff Way can also use the outdoor space at nearby Gorse Farm, which also includes a sensory garden.

Indoor spaceThe four bedroomed house provides a homely, welcoming environment and is tastefully furnished. Featuring an open-plan lounge and dining area, fully fitted modern kitchen, and a separate quiet space, the communal areas mean that the service users can socialise and relax, as well as spend time alone. Service users are encouraged to decorate their bedrooms to their own specific taste.

ActivitiesEveryday at Wagstaff Way, service users are given the flexibility and opportunity to take part in various activities that enhance their independence and involvement within the community. They often go shopping, attend discos and zumba, go bowling and have pamper evenings as a group. As well as taking part in group activities, individual activities such as cookery, gardening and music are also encouraged.

EnvironmentFor each service user, we create and deliver an individual care plan that caters for their specific needs. Within this care plan, we encourage each service

user to do as much for themselves as possible in order to maintain independence, physical ability and potential. Care plans are regularly monitored and formally reviewed every 6-12 months through a discussion between service users and staff to ensure that individual needs are being catered for.

Staff teamAt Wagstaff Way, we have a qualified staff team who are dedicated to providing the best care possible for adults with autism. All members of staff have undergone a supervised induction period, regular supervision from senior members of staff and a thorough introduction to the service’s policies and procedures concerning care plans, health and safety, equality and challenging behaviour. The members of staff at Wagstaff Way work hard to ensure that service users have as much control over their own lives as possible and that they are getting the most out of their experience at the home.
