フランス国立図書館が所蔵するオリジナルの地図を複製した図版のシート 6枚と、解説巻がセットになっています。図版の 1枚目と 2枚目は、暦・天体の運行表などを描いたもので、3～4枚目がイベリア半島からトルコまでの地中海周辺の地図、5～6枚目が中東を経て、ユーラシア大陸の東の果てアジアまでの地図です。3～6枚目は並べると、つながった一枚の地図になります。図版に書かれているカタラン語を英訳した詳細な解説がついています。中世の世界観を知るのに興味深い資料です。

no loss affects depiction of land or the text, but is luckily situated in the middle of the open sea (no text on verso).

Small tear to map of Frisia, likewise probably due to mounting-strip, though no loss. Some maps have marginal repairs

that do not affect maps, this goes for maps of Africa, Switzerland, Persia, Turkey, Greece and a few others. Overall the

maps are in unusually fine condition. Final three text-leaves repaired at margins. (WABP-37947)

ハクルート（1523-1616）はイギリスの地図学者。生涯聖職にありながら研究を続け、航海史・地理学上、重要な書を著しました。ハクルートはハーフォードシャーの出身で、ウェストミンスター・スクールからオックスフォードのクライスト・チャーチを卒業して、聖職につきました。ウェストミンスター時代から地理学や航海に興味をいだき、大学の頃は何でも貧欲に読みあさったといわれています。1582 年、ハクルートはそれまでの研究をまとめ、「アメリカおよびその属島の発見に関する諸種の航海」として出版、1588年に本書を発表しました。本書はスペイン、ポルトガルの後を追って世界の海原へ乗り出していったイギリス国民の冒険と植民地獲得、貿易などをまとめたもので、この一巻によりジョン・ホーキンズ（1532-95）、フランシス・ドレーク（1545 頃-96）、ウォーター・ローリー（1552 頃-1618）など探検家たちの業績を明らかにしました。

マッフェイ(1533-1603)はラテン語学者、人文学者で 1565年にイエズス会に加わり、東洋でのイエズス会の布教活動の記録係として任命されました。本書はマッフェイの主著で、初版は 1588年に出版され、1589年、1590 年と版を重ねました。イタリア語、フランス語の翻訳も出版されています。335

ページから日本での布教に関した報告書が収録されています。本書はオルテリウスとメルカトルの地図を基にした世界地図が収録された最初の版です。総革装丁で表紙に金装飾が施されていますが所々剥げています。タイトルページ及び本文中に書き込みがあります。

ドイツの医者で博物学者であったケンペル (Engelbert Kaempfer, 1651-1716) は東洋研究を志し、1690

年に長崎出島オランダ商館付き医師として来日しました。翌年 1691年２月 13日に江戸参府のため長崎を出発し、その道中に日本の実状を直接見聞しました。在日２年ののち 1692 年に帰国し、日本の地理、歴史、政治、宗教、貿易などについて記述しました。それまでのヨーロッパ人の日本に関する記述は想像によるものが多かったため、本書によって新機軸が開かれたといえます。

ケンペルの死後、遺稿は大英博物館の父といわれるハンス・スローン卿 (Sir Hans Sloane, 1660-1753)

の求めるところとなり、スイス生まれの医師ヨハン・カスパル・ショイヒツァー (Johann Caspar

Scheuchzer, 1702-29) に英訳を依頼し、1727年に "The History of Japan" としてロンドンで出版されました。ショイヒツァーは英訳する際に、本書をより完全なものにするため「廻国奇観」にある日本に関する記述もラテン語から英訳して付録としました。この付録の内容は、日本の茶や紙、鍼や灸などと共に「鎖国論」にも及んでいます。

本初版２刷は、この英語版初版初刷が出版された翌年、1728年に表題紙を多少変更して出版されました。その後、各国語に訳され、1729年にフランス語版、オランダ語版が続けて出版されました。また 1749年にフランス語からドイツ語に翻訳された版が出版され、後年発見されたドイツ語の原稿から 1777年にドイツ語決定版が出版されました。18世紀のヨーロッパ知識人の日本観を決定づけるのに大きな影響を与えた書であり、また、今日の我々にとっても江戸時代を知るための貴重な文献といえるでしょう。製本はおそらく 20世紀後半、1970年代に新たになされたものと思われます。そのときに全紙大の版画はすべて巻末にまとめられました。第１巻の序章に乱丁がありますが、内部は紙魚も少なく大変良好な状態です。

ケンペル(1651-1716)は、1690年にオランダ東インド会社によって長崎出島のオランダ商館長付医師として来日、翌 1691 年 2月 31日には長崎を出発して江戸参府を行っています。ケンペルの著作に関しては、没後出版された「日本誌(History of Japan, 1727)」が有名ですが、これはドイツ語で書き残した研究や報告書を未刊行のままケンペルが世を去ったために、遺稿として稀代の収集家であるハンス・スローン卿の手に渡ったものを J.G. Scheutzerが英訳し刊行したものです。その後もドイツ語の原文はついに発表されることはなく、1777年に出版されたドイツ語版も英語版からの翻訳でした。本復刻版は、この写本によって残されたドイツ語原文と 1791 年の「日本植物誌」の 2巻と、ケンペル以前の日本に関する書誌学的論考やケンペルと日本を取り巻く歴史的叙述が 2巻に纏められてます。

14世紀末から 20世紀にわたる朝鮮李王朝時代は木版印刷が発展し、様々な木版地図が制作されました。この 10枚の木版地図は 18～19 世紀に印行されたものと考えられています。歴代の朝鮮は八道の地域に分れていました。「京畿道」、「中清道」、「全羅道」、「慶尚道」、「江原道」、「黄海道」、「平安道」、「咸鏡道」でありました。このセットには「八道図」すべてが含まれ、さらに「中国図」と世界地図と言うべき「天下総図」も含まれています。この他「朝鮮国全図」「日本国図」「琉球国図」も作られていましたが、本コレクションには含まれていません。版元名は浮雲墨客板写と印刻されています。これらの地図に見られる天真爛漫、独創性、自由闊達さを有する性格は李王朝以前のものと考えられ、18世紀になってこの様式は知識人を中心に流行しました。この世界観は李朝民画に通ずる素朴な美しさを持っています。このコレクションに含まれる「天下総図」は、我が国の重要な古地図として知られ、明治大学図書館の中村拓文庫にも所蔵されています。

太陽から惑星までの距離に関する法則にその名を残す「ボーデによる星図」というタイトルがついていますが、正確な製作者や出版者は不明です。中央の大きな星図の周囲には、日食・月食の仕組みや惑星の軌道図などが描かれています。右上には、”19世紀における水星の太陽面通過”と題した図があり、何年にどの軌道で通過するか表わされています。

本の風俗・慣習についても書かれています。一部、韓国と中国についてかかれた章もあります。動物

や植物についても関心が高く、巻末にはシーボルトが収集した日本の鳥類のリストが付属しています。
