You may notice some new bird boxes around your community this summer. Bruce Power’s Environment and Sustainability Department has coordinated with Old Farm Woodworks to procure these bird boxes for various areas in our region.
Francis Chua, Department Manager of Environment and Sustainability explained: “Bruce Power wanted to share these bird boxes with those who would appreciate the creation of habitat for our friends, the birds. We share this environment with each other and this is a way of giving back to nature. We hope these make good homes for everyone to enjoy.”
The birds that could use these homes include the Ash-throated Flycatcher, Carolina Wren, Eastern Bluebird, and Violet-green Swallow.

The Prairie Point Alvar at Cape Croker is a globally rare native alvar grasslands. Its international, national
and provincial significance is recog-
nized in several recent peer-reviewed
ecological studies. The site sustains
one of Canada’s very few populations
of the federally and provincially endan-
gered plant, Gattinger’s Agalinis, as
well as threatened bird species and
many other grassland plants and ani-
mals considered either rare or in seri-
ous decline. The site also sustains tra-
ditional medicinal plant species im-
portant to the Nawash community, in-
cluding False Pennyroal and Cala-
mint.
Preparations for the Alvar Boardwalk Begin

The area, because of its shallow soils
and unusual hydrology, is vulnerable
to any kind of vehicle traffic as well
as other intensive human activi-
ties. Bruce Power has provided
funds to the Boardwalk Project to
protect the prairie alvar from all po-
tential harm.
Preparations for the construction of the Boardwalk began in August. At the time of this writing, materials for
100 feet of the approximately 400 feet of boardwalk have
been prepared and are ready for construction! Pictured
here is Anthony Chegano, working hard with his helpers
Coco and Nebo.
