SITE NUMBER: WA-II-756 ADDRESS: 51-53 South Main Street, Boonsboro, MD OWNER/LOT NUMBER/ACCESS: private BUILDING DATE: mid 19th century? pre-1877

51-53 South Main Street is a west-facing, horizontally massed,

one-and-a-half-story, six-bay, brick, freestanding, double house.

The building, which is set directly at the public-right-of-way and

an alley, rests on a stone foundation. The brick is laid in a

common bond and is painted red. The structure has a side-gable,

tin roof with two, endwall brick chimneys and one interior brick

chimney. A eastlake, flat-roof porch extends across the facade of

the house and protects the entrances. The doors appear to have

been replaced in the 1960s. Fenestration includes double-hung,

one-over-one sash windows with wood sills and lintels. Three of

the windows are rectangular in shape, while two (in the

southernmost bays) are square. There is a detached frame garage in

the back.

A building of similar configuration is indicated on the 1877

map of the town. Each of the Sanborn maps of Boonsboro (1897-1940)

show the same structure, which is numbered 256 and 257 Main Street.

The building is within the Western Maryland Geographic

Organization, the probable Development Period of Agricultural-

Industrial Transition, and falls within the Historic Period Theme

of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Community Planning.
