Flopetrol Nigeria Limited, Port Harcourt Base has seen many transfers, but the transfer of Barry Goulding and his

wife Lorraine was a transfer with a difference. If s not every­one who becomes a Nigerian Chief!

The send-off party for Barry and Lorraine attracted not only Flopetrol (PHB) personnel, but also attracted Client Reps, some of our suppliers and some ex-Flo staff.

SWB/ANB/ Do you knowWhat every one should know before working in Angola

GEOGRAPHY. Situated on the western coast of South­ern Africa, south of the Equator, Angola including the Cabinda enclave, comprises an area of approximately 1246 700 square kilometers, bounded by the Atlantic Ocean, Congo (Cabinda), Zaïre, Zambia and Namibia. It schemati­cally consists of a huge central region of highlands limited on the East and W est by two parallel ranges of mountains and of plateaux which gradually descend to the basin of the Congo ( north and east), to the Atlantic coast ( west) and to the Kala­hari Desert (south). Among many rivers flowing from the centra] regions, we would mention the L iambai or Zambezi which crosses the continent to flow into the Indian Ocean in Mozambique.

HISTORY. T he country was discovered by the Portuguese navigator Diego Cao in 1482 and became a Portuguese colony under the influence of Paulo Dias de Novais between 1560 and 1575. After 500 years of Portuguese colonization, Angola became an independent country the 11th of Novem­ber 1975, taking the name of “Popular Republic of Angola", a socialist state.

ECONOMY. Angola is essentially an agricultural land. Main crops are coffee, maize, oil seeds, rice, sisal, sugar and cotton. Stock-breeding and fishing are also two important activities. Angola has also mineral resources including oil and diamonds, then iron, phosphates, copper, gold, etc.

POPULATION. I 'here are around 6 000 000 inhabitants, belonging for the most part to the Bantu group. T he main ethnic groups are Umbundu (35% ), Kinbundu (19%), Kin- kongo (9% ), Lunda, Chokwe, Luvale, etc. Main cities are Luanda the capital (around 475000 inhabitants) Lobito- Benguela (150000), Huambo (80000), Malenge (35000) Lubango (32 000).

LANGUAGE. T he official language is Portuguese, spoken in the whole country.

RELIGION. Main religions are : Catholicism (2 700 000), Animism (2373 000), Protestantism (600000).

CLIMATE. There are two seasons : the dry and cool sea­son (“cacimbo”) from May to September and the rainy sea­son from October to April.The highland regions of the centre enjoy lower tempera­tures and receive heavier rainfalls.Luanda weather chart :

MEDICAL SERVICES. In Luanda, there are two gen­eral Hospitals : Maria Pia and Americo Boavida and the D. Joao III Clinic for emergency cases.

There are 400 mm of rainfall in Luanda and 1200 mm in Huambo. The best season to visit Angola is the summer: from October to April.

V \ J\ i/. \ Vv ProjectSoyo Base “Project” located at Soyo on the river Zaire is to be the ANB Base.

In the beginning Soyo base looked like a sand pit Then, after much discussion and various visits from important people things began to take shape and they still are today. The base is due to be finished at the end of the year (1983).

Well, the beginning of October saw the commencement of construction work. F irstly, as the jack-up rig “Heron” was at Sharjah for maintenance purposes, we used this time to install support steel (1), together with a bow cantilever plat­form (2) to support one of the two 90 ft flare booms. T he Heron then left Shar­jah mid-October to work-over and com­plete the Saleh IX well, offshore Ras A1 Khaimah. On the process side, a 28 m x 20 m concrete slab was laid (3), with main runner beams levelled to repres­en t as nearly as possible the Heron pipe-rack beams. As equipment and skids arrived from France and other parts of the world, so they were ins­talled in position on the concrete slab (4). In the meantime, the flare booms were undergoing modifications to receive a 10 inch LP flare pipe (5). The principal pipe-rack was constructed (6 7) whilst assembly work continued on the second and third stage separators (8).

One by one, the production skids were installed (9,10) and towards the end of October interconnecting pipes were being fitted (11,12). For all the work, life wasn’t dull at the assembly site (13)!At the end of November, the Heron became available for offshore installa­tion. T he process plant was disas­sembled into principal skids and over two days they were loaded out, then sea- fastened to the offshore transportation barge (14,15,16).On 4th December, the offshore loading commenced, and, with the help of the D B27 derrick barge, the skids were ins­talled in position on the Heron within 36 hours. The skids were aligned and the prefabricated pieces of pipe were reconnected to the skids (17).LP flare lines were run and the flare booms installed (18,19). The tie-in with the Saleh IX platform was completed, (20) and flexible pipes were bolted to the receiving flanges (21). The electri­cal hook-up work comprised powering the process MCC which in turn supplies the 3 export pumps, 3 associated pumps, platform lighting and the con­trol system. A safety shut-down system was installed, linking pressure and level switches on pressure vessels, and H2S and natural gas detectors around the plant to a centrally logical shut­down sequence for the well inlets and export outletUpon completing hydrotesting of the pipe system, function testing of the electrical/control system, and calibra­tion of instruments, the plant was ready for production...

On 3rd January 1984 at 15.45 hrs, after approximately 25000 manhours of engineering, procurement shipping, fabrication, installation and testing, and after having installed approximately 250 tonnes of production equipment

and piping, the Saleh IX well was opened and the plant put into produc­tion. Up to the point of writing, the aver­age daily production has been about 3,500 BOPD with 18 MM SCUFT/D of gas, on the one well.We look forward to seeing Saleh 2X and 3X wells brought on stream in the near future, and wish the Flopetrol produc­tion team headed up by Eddie Shreeve (EPF coordinator) and Tony Hughes (production supervisor) many happy barrels of production.

W ith the International Offshore Petroleum Equipment and Technology Exhibition in Tianjin over, Flopetrol Johnston received an

invitation from the Chinese National Oil Com­pany to visit 5 Chinese oilfield centers in Nor­thern China... in winter.

Chairman Max (Tuech) contacted “Ober- fiihrer” Simon Domzalski and François Millon Frémillon “San” and barked the order : “BLITZKRIEG CHINA”.

A “Polak” in sheep’s clothing, Simon went through the dress rehearsal prior to departure, knowing full well that François “San” was bring­ing along from Nippon secret equipment to ensure the complete success of the mission.

In a three week frantic odyssey across Nor­thern China from East to West, 9 000 km were covered in minibus, train and airplane.

T he oilfield regions visited were Renqui, Shengli, Zhong Y uan, Liaohe, Karamay situated within a 1000 km radius from the capital Beijing (Peking) with the exception of Karam ay,2 500 km from Beijing, in the Gobi Desert near the Sino-Soviet border.

NORTHERN CHINAA blur of variety, people... a way of life. Flat

brown fields, naked trees waiting for summer’s wardrobe. Rivers of small donkey carts, bicycles, thundering trucks laden with cab­bages. Snow, desërt landscape, railway stations, smiling faces, banquets at each oil province. Health to France, friendship, toast to working partnerships, strong Chinese spirits, excellent beer, food, long meetings, seminars, presenta­tions (all translated by patient translators)... and again into a cold which went from — 5 "C to — 30 °C.

Having thrown everything we had to offer at our host’s feet — SPRO, MUST, SSDP, DST, etc., François “San” in a desperate bid to divert attention (his moustache had long ago caught frostbite), highjacked his pants and unveiled his * last hope from Nippon — aubergine suede work boots with shining black patent leather toe- caps... He still claims his wife bought them for him!

Although winter had gripped the middle kingdom, Marco Millon/Simon managed to find a bouquet of winter flowers, which they knew they would never be able to offer to their better halves.

If this article is read by any of our Chinese hosts, we would once again like to thank them for the unfailing help and kindness which they extended to us during our visit to their magnifi­cent country. We hope that cooperation between Flopetrol Johnston and their companies will flourish in the years ahead.

Flopetrol Rugby Team

After a mere five weeks of designing, modelling and field testing, Melun pro­duced in December its latest creation : a “Rugby Team ”. With only fifteen mov­ing parts, plus 2 spares, this life-size model of the real thing fulfilled everyo­ne’s wildest dreams, by being awarded second place in its first public perfor­mance.

T he brainchild of Peter Airey (RND) and fashioned in his spare time from mostly rusty elements scrounged from several departments, the team rapidly took shape. M ercilessly hound­ed by Christian Robert’s (TEC) Dober- mann, Jenny, such was the progress made that after only three sessions, almost the whole team could run all the way round the practice ground. Later, the science of catching die ball was mastered by many. By next season, it is intended that a combination of both running and ball-handling will be achieved.

As the first prototype was only expect­ed to give good workmanlike service, high technology was (exceptionally)

omitted from the drawing board. But fine engineering ensured that each moving part was interchangeable with most others, a significant factor on the day.

Chosen testing ground for the new product was an existing field in the geo­thermal belt at Fontainebleau. Lined up as competition was the much older and already gremlin-free Belifontain model known as “Folklorique” which holds a dominant market position and is well- liked by its clients.

Undaunted by such a reputation, the Melun machine gave a vigourous show of its potential, emphasizing in particular its capabilities under high pressure and in low temperatures.

The pieces will be required to lock into the formation better in future ver­sions (3).

Safety aspects of the team showed up well; there was very little surface friction and only two or three elements showed anything more than normal wear and tear. Given the rock-hard con­ditions at the site, this was no mean achievement

No client demonstration is com­plete without the accom panying pub­licity and thanks go to the support provided by Fontainebleau’s answer to the Tiller Girls (6).

The second prototype, incorpo­rating a number of amendments, is expected to be out in the field shortly. With superior technology, it is hoped that it will eliminate the competition.

Things didn 7 start too well as André Rocklin was on the wrong side o f the table.Ill spite o f having to crawl underneath, aided and abetted by willing helpers, he regained his customary dignity to present Henri Bemadat (ex TliC. now RND) with his five year pin.

The last suggestions received and exam ined were very valuable : three out of seven have been reta ined and

rewarded. T he winners are :

T erje Baustad and Gerhardus Hoog Antink. Will have to share the 500 dol­lars reward fora modificati on of the Flo­petrol sampler transfer. To transfer the sample from a “dri lled rod” type sampler into the Flopetrol bottle with the transfer bench may lead to accidental release of the sample into the upper mercury drain, should the drilled rod be plugged by foreign material (paraffin). In this case, when filling up with mercury the closed loop formed by the lower transfer head, the drilled rod, the upper transfer head and the sample bottle, the pressure is applied to the upper shutter of the sampler. Since the locking mechanism is freed by the upper transfer head, the sample trapping system (shutters + drilled rod) can move up, thus releasing the sample into the upper mercury drain.

Terje Baustad and Gerhardus Hoog Antink were the first to detect this prob­lem. Then they suggested a minormodi- fication of the lower transfer head so as to screw together the transfer piston and the central rod. They also proposed a change in the transfer procedure.A technical c ircular is being issue con­cerning this problem.

Patrice Corjon. Has been awarded 450 dollars for a soft setting and releasing system. It is used for ELS tools during “yoyo” measurements while flow ing. In wells with high flow rates,or when it is not possible to overcome friction on the cable,or when the tool is lifted up by the flow. T he first embodiment is a combination of a normal ELS string in­cluding pressure gauges, a releasing mechanism comprising a mechanical clock, a connector of the SPRO type and a lock with latches. T he clock is set at surface so as to release the latches after a predetermined period of time. In the second embodiment, a pyrotechnically operated releasing head is used instead of the releasing head operated by the mechan ical clock.

The members of the Committee then had a difficult but rewarding task : to select, among the 44 suggestions, the best one received since the beginning of the challenge. In order to do so, several aspects were considered, such as the non-obviousness of the principal increase of the safety, the possib i lity of bringing new revenues to Flopetrol, etc. The competition was very strong, mainly among the suggestions received from Léon Dereymez, Patrice Corjon and T erje Baustad and Gerhardus Hoog Antink. It was finally Terje Baustad and Gerhardus Hoog Antink who won the race for the suggestion concerning the sampler fransfer. Both will receive a very nice present. We hope that the awards ceremony will appear in Echoflo.

Massa Turns 53Ê Jk assa, the world’s oldest known # • gorilla, celebrated his 53rd b irth­day last Friday at Philadelphia Zoo, where he lives and reigns as the star, despite a greying coat and the absence of several teeth.Like all old mammals, Massa suffers from arthritis and doesn’t see so well, but he still draws the crowds.Nearly 150 people gathered on Friday in front of his cage to sing “Happy Birth­day”.Bom in West Africa, he was taken to Philadelphia in 1935.Very unimpressed by his visitors and displaying a regrettable lack of cour­tesy, Massa turned his back on them to lick his fingers as he tasted his birthday cake, which contained bananas, grapes and vanilla ice-cream, the whole thing be ing topped off by five carrots in the place of the traditional candles. Questioned as to how long his guest could be expected to live, the Zoo’s vet., Mr. Wilbur Amand, stated that gorillas generally don’t live beyond the age of 25 and that “no-one would have believed that Massa could reach 50”.

T'h e M UST -T h is is the new Flopetrol down-hole shut-in tool for use in Drill-Stern testing.

It is a multi-shot, wireline operated valve, which allows real-time surface read-out of bottom hole pressure and temperature.

T he presentation was held to demonstrate the functioning of the M UST after a simulated Sand-Frac. Amongst those clients present were representatives from Agip, Total and Elf, whilst clients from Aberdeen (BP and Shell) were brought to Melun for the day.

An abrasive mixture of mud, Frac-Sand, and drilling cuttings was pumped through the valve for half an hour before latching the valve operator and performing a full function test.

Thanks to the efforts of protoshop, who were preparingthe demons­tration up until 10 pm the previous night, the show ran very smoothly.
