ADSL and SDSL (colle ctive ly xDSL) conne ctions norm ally provide Inte rne t conne ctivity. W ith Private xDSL, conne ctivity th e Inte rne t is optional. Each line is prim arily conne cte d to a private routing dom ain or “cloud”, not th e Inte rne t.

Th e obje ctive of Private xDSL is to provide a supe rior re place m e nt for traditional IPSEC/PPTP VPNs. Be caus e th e s e traditional VPN solutions are de s igne d to w ork ove r th e public Inte rne t, th e y are by ne ce s s ity com ple x. Th is com ple xity is w h at m ak e s th e m unre liable and difficult to m anage .

Private xDSL by contrast is far le ss com ple x, s im ply be caus e th e data be tw e e n s ite s doe s not trave rs e th e Inte rne t. Inste ad traffic is pass e d dire ctly be tw e e n s ite s via th e private routing cloud.

Unlik e IPSEC, th e re is no ne e d to configure a m e s h of tunne ls be tw e e n s ite s. Each s ite conne cts to th e cloud, w h ich in turn give s th at s ite acce s s to all oth e r s ite s w ith in th e cloud. W ith Private xDSL, configuring route rs at e ach s ite be com e s a trivial m atte r.

Be caus e e ach Ne ts e rve rs custom e r ope rate s w ith in th e ir ow n private "cloud" (or routing dom ain), th e y are fre e to us e w h ate ve r private IP addre s s e s th e y w is h ove r th e ir xDSL line s. Th is include s IP range s such as 19 2.168.0.0/24 e tc. (RFC19 18).

Most (but not all) of our custom e rs also w ant to conne ct to th e Inte rne t. Th is can be done in a varie ty of w ays. Th e route r at e ach s ite can be is sue d w ith a public IP addre s s th at is pe rm itte d onto th e inte rne t.

Alte rnative ly, a s ingle Inte rne t gate w ay can be adde d to th e private ne tw ork e ith e r at one s ite (e .g. your H Q), or in our London co-location facility. Th is w ill e nable you to ope rate a s ingle fire w all/conte nt filte r for your e ntire ne tw ork .
