In most normal circumstances, we are truly free in our actions and therefore must take responsibility for those actions. St. John Paul II said that freedom properly understood is having the ability to do what we ought - not necessarily whatever one desires to do. Further in this First Reading, we learn that John Paul II is correct in his understanding of freedom when Sirach tells WE ARE DISCIPLES: LEARNING, LOVING & LIVING CHRISTS MISSION Sunday, February 16, 2020 us that God does not give license to sin - meaning our freedom is given to us so that we might choose to do what is right and good. That freedom is not given to us so that we can do whatever, but so that we can freely do the good. It is also noteworthy that the Commandments corre- spond to our nature. They are not arbitrary rules, but they truly match up with who we are as human persons. They help us to live as we are created to live. This Week:

God’s Commands are Good

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Keep the Commandments - They Will

Save You!

Our First Reading comes from Sirach this weekend. In it,

we learn that God has given us the gift of freedom where-

by we can choose to keep the Commandments and that in

so doing, we will be saved. This reading from Sirach em-

phasizes the importance of our freedom in the moral life.

In most normal circumstances, we are truly free in our

actions and therefore must take responsibility for those

actions. Our society is heavily concerned with freedom

today, but there is a general misunderstanding of what

freedom actually means. St. John Paul II said that

freedom properly understood is having the ability to do

what we ought - not necessarily whatever one desires to

do.

Further in this First Reading, we learn that John Paul II is

correct in his understanding of freedom when Sirach tells

WE ARE DISCIPLES: LEARNING, LOVING & LIVING CHRIST’S MISSION

us that God does not give license to sin - meaning our

freedom is given to us so that we might choose to do

what is right and good. That freedom is not given to us

so that we can do whatever, but so that we can freely do

the good.

It is also noteworthy that the Commandments corre-

spond to our nature. They are not arbitrary rules, but

they truly match up with who we are as human persons.

They help us to live as we are created to live. They help

us to live a most authentically human life and they ulti-

mately lead to happiness not only in this life, but they

also lead us to the ultimate happiness of the next life.

I Have Come to Fulfill the Law

In our Gospel Reading this weekend, we are reminded

by Jesus Christ that He did not come to abolish the law,

but to fulfill it. The Israelites began to live in a very

legalistic mentality - one in which the law was not

properly understood.

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, God’s

Commands are Good, as we Learn, Love, & Live

Christ’s Mission!

Our Lady of the Most Blessed Sacrament, Pray for us!

The fulfillment of the law was understood in the

superficial performance of certain tasks, but without any

real amendment to one’s life. Throughout His ministry,

Jesus Christ sought to help people truly understand the

demands of the Commandments by showing the Israelites

the superficial way in which they attempted to fulfill

them, and then deepening their understanding so that they

might be authentically fulfilled.

“We Are Disciples”

Thank you to the 98 families who completed their

commitment cards last weekend. Completed commitment

cards may be returned to the parish office or placed in the

offertory basket for the next three weeks. Our goal

through this program is to bring more souls to Christ,

raise awareness as to why we do what we do, and return

our blessings back to God.

Deepening Our Understanding

Just like the Israelites, Jesus calls us into the right the

relationship with God. Are we living by God’s

commands? Are we inviting others into that same right

relationship? How can we be witnesses to God’s

Commands?

WE ARE DISCIPLES: LEARNING, LOVING & LIVING CHRIST’S MISSION
