It is my pleasure to join you in celebrating the Vietnamese Culture and Science Association’s (VCSA) 19th Annual Youth Excellence Recognition Program. This program, which commemorates the achievements of outstanding Vietnamese-American high school students, is an accomplishment of which you should be very proud.

For 25 years the VCSA has worked to instill a sense of civic responsibility among Vietnamese- Americans and build strong communities across Texas and the United States. I commend your efforts today as you recognize the academic accomplishments of these exceptional high school students who graduated as either valedictorian or salutatorian in their respective schools. I also join with their family, friends, and VCSA in congratulating them on their out standing achievements. These students, along with the VCSA, continue to make Texas proud, and I am confident that the VCSA’s Youth Excellence Recognition Program will continue to foster academic success in future generations of Vietnamese-Americans.

The Vietnamese Culture and Science Association is a 501-c(3) non-profit Vietnamese American organization founded in 1990. It has over 550 members which consist of a majority of young Vietnamese American professionals in Houston and in other states of the US and Canada. The VCSA is based in Houston, Texas. Beside the Headquarter office in Houston, VCSA has seven other chapters located in Dallas, Austin, Texas; Minnesota; San Diego, California; Washington DC, Toronto, Ontario, Canada and Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Mission StatementVietnamese Culture and Science Association promotes excellence in education, leadership and skills development through culture and science. Our organization encourages multi-generational and cross-cultural collaborations. We foster civic participation in the mainstream and Vietnamese America.

ObjectivesVCSA’s objectives are to: • Preserve and develop Vietnamese heritage and culture for the Vietnamese American young adults and Vietnamese descendants by establishing various programs and activities. • Promote cooperation among Vietnamese American professionals in exchanging their skills, participating in the programs and activities to build a strong Vietnamese community in North America in general, and in Texas and other states of U.S. in particular. • Encourage participation in community programs and activities and build a strong sense of civic responsibility among Vietnamese Americans. • Collaborate with other Asian communities and the mainstream society.

Activities and Programs • Organize quarterly general meeting to obtain inputs and ideas from members regarding programs and activities of the VCSA. • Organize regular Vietnamese Literature, History classes for young Vietnamese Americans to learn more about the heritage language and Computer classes for the Vietnamese community. • Organize monthly Toastmaster program to improve the communication skills for members. • Organize regular cultural events and participate in the annual cultural events such as the American Asian Festival and the Mardi Gras Festival. • Organize regular professional development workshops to discuss on Science and Technology topics and to share ideas and skills among the professionals. • Organize Annual National Youth Leadership Development Camp “Len Duong”. • Organize Annual Youth Excellence Recognition Luncheon. • Participate in all community related activities such as charitable fund raising events, the Vietnamese New Year Festival, the Asian American Festival and other Asian communities’ events.

VCSA 19th Annual Youth Excellence Recognition Program

After 1975, there have been large waves of Vietnamese refugees escaping from Vietnam to the United States, Canada, and other Western countries. Since then, the Vietnamese-American population has grown tremendously and contributed a great deal to the adopted homeland. With a population of more than one million, the Vietnamese-American communities in the United States have started building their lives and contributed to the society in all different ϐi elds. The second and third generations of Vietnamese-American have increased in population and comprised a major part of these communities.

In 1997, The Vietnamese Culture and Science Association organized the First Vietnamese-American Youth Recognition Luncheon to recognize the academic achievement of 13 Viet-namese-American students who graduated from more than 55 local high schools in Houston as Valedictorians or Salutatorians. Mayor Lee Brown was the Keynote Speaker for this event. The event was very well received by the community and had a very positive impact on the Asian youth in general and the Vietnamese-American youths in particular.

The event emphasized the importance of education and encouraged the youth to excel academi-cally. In the past eighteen years, we have continued this program as an Annual event of our organization. This program has recognized more than 330 Vietnamese-American students in the past eighteen years for their excellent academic achievements from local high schools. This year, Vietnamese Culture and Science Association is proud to present the Eighteenth Annual Youth Excellence Recognition program. In this event, we will present a slide show featuring the highlights of VCSA activities in the past year. We also would like to encourage the younger generations of Vietnamese-Americans to excel in education by following the footsteps of the outstanding academic and leadership achievements of the Vietnamese-American high school students who graduated as Valedictorian or Salutatorian in the Greater Houston and vicinity. Other scholarship programs will also be presented in this event. The past honorees will highlight the event with spectacular cultural performances and entertainment.

The Recognition Luncheon is organized on Sunday, August 2nd, 2015 at Kim Son Ballroom, 10603 Bellaire Boulevard, Houston, Texas 77072.

Ngày Truyền Thống Hội Văn Hóa Khoa Học Việt Nam 2015

Kể từ biến cố tháng 4 năm 1975, hàng triệu người Việt Nam đã phải bỏ nước ra đi để tìm kiếm một đời sống tự do và trong số này, khoảng hơn phân nửa đã đến định cư tại Hoa Kỳ. Chỉ trong một thời gian ngắn, những người di dân Việt Nam tại Hoa Kỳ không những đã nhanh chóng ổn định đời sống mà còn đóng góp cho xã hội tạm dung nhiều thành quả quan trọng về mọi phương diện như kinh tế, giáo dục, xã hội, khoa học, kỹ thuật, v.v... Trong tác phẩm “Vietnamese Americans” do cơ sở Rourke Corporation tại Florida xuất bản năm 1991, tác giả Susan Auerbach đã viết: “Các thành quả của người Việt trong khuôn khổ học đường, trong lãnh vực khoa học kỹ thuật, và trong phạm vi kinh doanh đã gây phấn khởi cho những người thuộc các sắc dân khác vừa đến định cư tại Hoa Kỳ.” Trong một tác phẩm khác với nhan đề “The Vietnamese Experience in America” do cơ sở xuất bản viện đại học Indiana ấn hành năm 1992 tại Indianapolis, ông Paul Rutledge nhận định là “với sự thành công nhanh chóng của người Việt, chỉ trong một thời gian ngắn, xã hội Hoa Kỳ sẽ được hưởng mối lợi gấp nhiều lần số ngân khoản chính phủ đã trợ giúp họ trong vấn đề định cư.”

Thật vậy, như những nhận xét của các tác giả nêu trên, người Việt tỵ nạn đã thành công khá nhanh chóng so với những người di dân khác và thành công về mọi lãnh vực, đặc biệt tại học đường. Hầu hết những người di dân Việt Nam đã đến Hoa Kỳ với một số vốn nghèo nàn về Anh ngữ. Tuy nhiên, với tinh thần hiếu học đã ăn sâu vào tâm khảm người Việt từ bao thế hệ, chỉ trong một thời gian ngắn ngủi, họ đã trở nên những học sinh, sinh viên xuất sắc tại các trường trung, đại học và sau khi tốt nghiệp, đã mang khả năng của mình để cống hiến cho xã hội Hoa Kỳ. Trong hơn hai thập niên qua, thế hệ con em của những người di dân Việt Nam đầu tiên đã dần dần trưởng thành và đang cố gắng nối tiếp truyền thống cha anh để đạt được những thành quả tốt đẹp trong sự học. Đầu năm 1997, qua sự liên lạc với ban giám hiệu các trường trung học ở Houston và vùng phụ cận, hội VHKHVN được biết số học sinh Việt Nam tốt nghiệp với thứ hạng thủ khoa (valedictorian) và á khoa (salutatorian), niên khóa 1996-1997, chiếm một tỉ lệ khá cao so với các sắc dân khác. Trước sự kiện này, hội VHKHVN đã tổ chức một buổi tiệc vào ngày 3 tháng 8 năm 1997 để tuyên dương và phát thưởng các em học sinh ưu tú kể trên. Mục đích chính của buổi tiệc là để khuyến khích tất cả các học sinh, sinh viên Việt Nam chuyên cần hơn trong sự học. Trong buổi tiệc, tiến sĩ Lee Brown, thị trưởng thành phố Houston, đã phát biểu trên diễn đàn là ông rất ngạc nhiên và vô cùng thán phục trước thành tích vẻ vang của các học sinh người Mỹ gốc Việt. Ý nghĩa và sự thành công của buổi tiệc năm đầu tiên đã gây được tiếng vang đáng kể, không những tại thành phố Houston mà còn lan đến các thành phố có đông người Việt cư ngụ tại Hoa Kỳ và tại một vài quốc gia khác. Sau đó, được sự khích lệ của quý đồng hương, hội VHKHVN quyết định sẽ cố gắng tiếp tục chương trình tuyên dương cùng phát thưởng các học sinh ưu tú hằng năm. Chương trình này sẽ được bao gồm trong các buổi tiệc với danh xưng “Ngày Truyền Thống Hội VHKHVN,” được tổ chức vào mỗi đầu tháng Tám. Trong 18 năm vừa qua, Ngày Truyền Thống đã có dịp tuyên dương thành tích xuất sắc của hơn 330 em học sinh trung học Việt Nam tại Houston và vùng phụ cận. Năm nay, hội VHKHVN hân hạnh giới thiệu thành tích xuất sắc của 30 em học sinh ưu tú của niên khóa 2014 – 2015.

Đặc biệt năm nay là năm kỷ niệm lần thứ 19 Hội thực hiện chương trình ý nghĩa này và công tác tổ chức do chính các em học sinh xuất sắc các niên học trước phụ trách. Với chương trình tuyên dương và phát thưởng các học sinh Việt Nam ưu tú, hội VHKHVN hy vọng sẽ ít nhiều góp phần vào việc khuyến khích các em trau giồi sự học để làm thăng tiến cộng đồng người Việt chúng ta tại Houston và vùng phụ cận.

Mr. Quy “Charlie” Ton came to America as a boat person, grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. He graduated from Louisiana State University with a Bachelor degree in Chemical Engineering. He began his business career importing nail supplies, in part, because his wife owned a nail salon and her customers wanted quality nail care products without having to pay exorbitant prices. He named the company Alfalfa Nails Supply after the flowers loved by the bees he tended as a work/

study student at LSU. He began by selling to local nail salon owners and expanded throughout the United States.

Today, Alfalfa Nails Supply has more than ten thousand salon customers. Ton has developed many lines of nail products including well-known brands like Regal lacquers, ANS, QT, Lexi, Beyond, Sheila, Lila, Geluv, and Gelart. He engineered, developed, and now produces Ispa, Everest, Katai, Kata Gi, GspaW, Ion, Petalo and many more pedicure spas using the top of the line massage chairs known as HT-135 PS brand and designs, and builds much of the spas designs and the furniture used in his second business venture.

That business venture — Regal Nails — took root in 1997 while shopping in Wal-Mart. He noticed that Wal-Mart had a hair salon on site and yet it had no nail salons. Based on that observation, Ton developed the concept that became Regal Nails salons. Ton met with Wal-Mart officials to convince them to lease space to Regal Nails. Wal-Mart turned him down at first because they did not think the concept would work. Ton refused to give up. He kept after Wal-Mart officials until they agreed to let him open a test store in Shreveport, La. The first Regal Nails opened on October 29, 1997. The salon proved so successful that Wal-Mart agreed to let him open other salons inside their stores. He began selling franchises to Vietnamese immigrants and within ten years Ton had sold more than 900 franchises with plans to reach more soon. Franchises are located inside Wal-Mart Supercenters, Meijer, and HEB Stores and now working with AAFES to create services within military. At one point, they were growing at a rate of a hundred per year.

Ton has won numerous awards including ‘Young Alumnus of the Year” from the LSU Alumni Association Hall of Distinction; “Top Forty Under Forty” from the Greater Baton Rouge Business Report and “Young Business person of the Year” from the Baton Rouge Business Awards & Hall of Fame. He also had previously served on the Baton Rouge Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

Ông Quý “Charlie” Tôn là một thuyền nhân, đến Mỹ và trưởng thành tại New Orleans, Louisiana. Ông tốt nghiệp Đại học Louisiana State với bằng Cử nhân về Kỹ sư Hóa học. Ông khởi đầu doanh nghiệp bằng việc nhập cảng những dụng cụ làm móng tay, một phần vì vợ ông làm chủ một tiệm làm móng tay và thân chủ của bà muốn có được những sản phẩm tốt chăm sóc móng tay mà không phải trả giá quá mắc. Ông đặt tên cho công ty của mình là Alfalfa Nails Supply, theo tên những loại hoa có sức quyến rũ loài ong rất mạnh; sở dĩ như vậy vì khi còn học tại LSU ông phụ trách nuôi đàn ong trong chương trình work study. Doanh nghiệp của ông Charlie khởi đầu bằng việc bán dụng cụ cho các tiệm móng tay và nay đã được mở rộng trên toàn quốc Hoa Kỳ.

Cho đến nay, Công tay Alfalfa Nails Supply có hơn mười ngàn khách hàng là những chủ tiệm nail. Ông Charlie đã chế biến nhiều loại sản phẩm dành cho móng tay, gồm có những hiệu nổi tiếng như Regal lacquers, ANS, QT, Lexi, Beyond, Sheila, Lila, Geluv, và Gelart. Ngoài ra ông đã chế tạo, hoàn thiện và sản xuất các sản phẩm như Ispa, Everst, Katai, Kata Gi, Gspa W, Ion, Petalo và nhiều những cửa tiệm làm móng chân dùng những chiếc ghế massage nổi danh như HT-135PS, đồng thời vẽ kiểu, thiết kế cho những bàn ghế dùng trong lãnh vực kinh doanh thứ hai.

Lãnh vực kinh doanh thứ hai này là Regal Nails. Khởi đầu từ năm 1997 khi mua hàng ở Wal-Mart, ông Charlie thấy rằng Wal-Mart có tiệm làm tóc nhưng hoàn toàn không có tiệm làm móng tay. Theo quan sát này, ông Charlie bắt đầu có ý tưởng mà sau này trở thành Regal Nails; ông liên lạc với Wal-Mart và xin thuê địa điểm trong Wal-Mart để mở tiệm, nhưng Wal-Mart từ chối vì nghĩ rằng không khả thi. Nhưng Charlie vẫn kiên trì theo đuổi và cuối cùng Wal-Mart đồng ý cho thử nghiệm với tiệm đầu tiên tại Shreveport, LA, vào ngày 29 tháng 10, năm 1997. Cửa tiệm Regal Nails đã thành công vượt mức và Wal-Mart đồng ý cho ông mở thêm những tiệm khác trong Walmart. Cho đến nay ông đã có hơn 900 đại lý và còn có kế hoạch để phát triển thêm. Những đại lý của Regal Nails tọa lạc trong những siêu thị Wal-Mart, Meijer, và HEB. Hiện nay Charlie đang thương thảo với AAFES (Khu Thương mại dành riêng cho quân đội Hoa Kỳ) để mở những cửa tiệm trong những trung tâm này. Trong quá trình hoạt động Re-gal Nails đã có lúc tiến triển với tốc độ 100 tiệm mỗi năm.

Ông Charlie Quy Ton đã nhận được nhiều giải thưởng như “Cựu Sinh viên Trẻ Trong Năm” của Hội Cựu Sinh viên LSU; “Bốn mươi Nhân vật Hàng đầu dưới Bốn mươi tuổi” của Greater Baton Rouge Business Report và “Doanh gia Trẻ trong năm” của Baton Rouge Business Awards & Hall of Fame. Trước đây ông cũng là thành viên Hội đồng Quản trị của Phòng Thương mại Baton Rouge.

Significant Achievement: The significant achievement that I’m most proud of is gaining the title of Colonel for the Wildcats Dance Team. Over the four years in high school, I’ve dedicated a big part of my time towards the dance team and have seen great improvement in my leadership skills as the years past. Therefore, I truly believe the title belongs to me and I was determined to continue to prove myself worthy of that title.

Goals: I’m determined to travel the world in searching for new remedies in herbs. That was due to my parents’ obsession with herbs. I’ve hiked up to small mountain sights with my parents in Vietnam and look for herbs with them. Due to the lack of nutrients that I faced during the worst times of this disorder, I was forced to consume many pills that supported my metabolism. By experiencing this first hand on how my body responded to the pills, I became interested in enhanc-ing my knowledge on this field of study. I realized my dream is not to just treat patients with the drugs and treatments that are already been made, but to treat them with something new that will give a more effective result.

Mục đích: Tôi quyết tâm đi du lịch thế giới để tìm kiếm các biện pháp chữa bệnh mới trong các loại dược thảo. Đó là do đam mê của bố mẹ tôi với các loại thảo mộc trong việc chữa bệnh. Tôi đã từng leo lên đỉnh của ngọn núi nhỏ với cha mẹ tôi ở Việt Nam và tìm kiếm các loại thảo mộc với họ. Vì bị thiếu dinh dưỡng trong giai đoạn khó khăn này, tôi phải uống rất nhiều loại thuốc bổ. Trải qua những kinh nghiệm trực tiếp về ảnh hưởng của các loại thuốc này, tôi bắt đầu chú ý đến việc gia tăng kiến thức về lãnh vực này. Tôi nhận ra giấc mơ của tôi là không chỉ điều trị bệnh nhân với các loại thuốc và phương pháp trị liệu đã có sẵn, nhưng với những phương pháp mới mà hiệu quả hơn.

Significant achievement: My proudest achievement would be none other than advancing far further in UIL this year and performing better than I ever have even though the region my school district had been placed in had grown exponentially more difficult and competitive. All the while, I accrued many of what I consider my most cherished memories at these competitions where I was amongst friends and rivals.

Goals: I aspire to graduate with a PhD in Computer Science so as to teach at a university and actively engage myself in researching the field in which I hold so much passion.

Special thoughts: I’d like to thank my parents for their support and encouragement and my brother for his guidance as success would have been otherwise impossible alone.

Mr. Anthony Nguyen Thanh Toan was always an avid supporter of education, taking inspiration from the dedicated work of his wife, Kim Yen Vu, a long time public school educator. Kim Yen Vu was the previous president of the Vietnamese Culture and Science Association. The scholarship fund was established in memory of Anthony, who passed away on July 22, 2011, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. He was an active member and longtime supporter of VCSA.

LEPHAM CITIZENSHIP AND PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD The LePham family and committee is looking to award this scholarship to an aspiring Vietnamese-American student who is able to demonstrate strong civic participation and active citizenship within the community. Changes and improvements can only take place when future leaders organize within the community to address problems. We seek to empower young Vietnamese-Americans to attend college, and to pursue their dreams for further community service and public works.

About Nicholas C. LePham Nicholas ChiLinh LePham is a graduate of Tufts University, Boston, Massachusetts, with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. Mr. LePham was born in Houston, TX, and spent his childhood there before moving abroad. However, he has always considered Houston his home and would like to give back to the community. He’s also a passionate political activist, whose past experience includes work on the Presidential campaign of US Senator John F. Kerry (MA), the Congressional campaign of US Rep. Nick Lampson (TX-Sugar Land), the Hillary Clinton for President Committee (NY) and the Center for American Progress. More recently, he co-founded the National Organization of Vietnamese Leaders (NOVAL) where he is the DC Chapter’s Treasurer and currently works at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the government agency that ensures consumer financial products and services work for all Americans. His goals with the scholarship are the following:

• Encourage civic participation, leadership and service among Vietnamese/Vietnamese-American students in the community • Foster awareness of Vietnamese/Vietnamese-American culture and history • Promote the interests of the Vietnamese/Vietnamese-American student bodies

Anh Nguyen STEM Scholarship for Female Vietnamese-American The Vietnamese Culture and Science Association (VCSA) and Dr. Ngoc Anh Nguyen are pleased to invite applicants for the 2015 Anh Nguyen STEM Scholarship for Female Vietnamese American. Dr. Ngoc Anh Nguyen is looking to award a $300 scholarship to an aspiring female Vietnamese-American student who plans to major in any science, technology, engineering, or math field. About Dr. Ngoc Anh Nguyen Dr. Ngoc Anh Nguyen was born in Saigon, Vietnam and moved to Houston when she was 7 years old. She grew up in Houston, Texas and was a Youth Excellence Recognition Program honoree in 2003. After high school, she went on to graduate from Rice University in 2007 and she earned her M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine in 2011. Afterwards, she trained at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital in New York City, formerly Columbia University, now Mt. Sinai University. Dr. Ngoc Anh Nguyen specializes in Emergency Medicine and is currently practicing at Clear Lake Regional Medical Center. She hopes to encourage women to pursue careers in the STEM fields, as she believes that there is great opportunity to effect change and advance progress in the world. There is a large deficit of women in these fields, and she'd like to do her part to attempt to close the gap through this scholarship.

era Tran was born on April 22, 1982 in McKinney Texas to Mr. and Mrs. LamTran. She graduated Salutatorian from Michael DeBakey High School forHealth Professions in 2000. She was a VCSA Youth

Excellence Recognition Award Recipient in 2000, and joined VCSA afterwardsand became the Director of Social Services. Every summer, she met up withformer recipients to help organize the Youth Excellence Recognition Program. Shewas in her last year of studies at the University of Houston, Baylor-Houston Pre-Medical Academy, majoring in Biology, when the tragic accident occurred. On April15, 2003, one week before her 21st birthday, Vera tragically died in a car accidentthat occurred when an 18-wheeler ran a stop sign. Though we mourn theunfulfilled goals she had yet to achieve, we celebrate her enormous contributionsto our lives and her love for humanity.

Vera dedicated her life to community service. In the summer she would work in a nutrition research lab at the Children’s Nutrition Research Center. She wasalways a smiling, helpful and cheerful volunteer. The Children’s Nutrition ResearchCenter has since named an internship in her honor. Since November 2002, shewas involved with the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Foundation-Student Global AIDSWalk Committee. She was the City Director (Fundraising, Marketing, Recruitment, Logistic planning) of the group of undergraduate students to coordinate a HoustonAIDS walk to benefit clinics in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. In November2001 she helped to organize a Fund Raising Drive in Houston to raise funds forthe flood victims in Vietnam. She helped to raise more than $25,000 for the floodvictims in Vietnam. She also has been the initiator and leader of the “Meals for theHomeless” project every Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday since 2001. Hersudden departure has greatly impacted so many people whose lives have beentouched by her.

Vera Tran was a role-model, an inspiration, and a friend to all who met her. Shefearlessly took on life armed with only love and compassion. Vera greeted everyone she met with a smile – a smile that could light up an entire room. Shehad an immaculate soul and a song in her heart. This is how Vera will beremembered by her family and friends, as well as the Vietnamese community atlarge.Her demise was a tragic loss that resonated throughout the community. In 2003,2000 VCSA Youth Excellence Recognition recipients Trang Pham and Huy Phamcreated the Vera Tran Memorial Foundation Scholarship.

With a generous donation from Vera’s father, and yearly contributions from Huyand Trang, we hope to continue this annual scholarship going.

The $2,000 scholarship recognizes a graduating student of Vietnamese descent, with an excellent academic record and atrack record of compassion and initiative in community service. The ideal candidate encompasses Vera’s twin commitments ofacademic excellence and community service.
