VERNON TOWNSHIP’S SUMMER READING PROGRAM
June 20th: Book Day!For the first time in our history every student, at every grade level, will receive a book to
take home for the summer on the first day
of summer.
Walnut Ridge:
Before they even begin school, families signing up for kindergarten will receive two books as gifts from Mrs. Gebhardt and Mrs. Krops to read to their children as they prepare for school!
Walnut Ridge: Kindergarteners going to 1st Grade and 1st Graders going to Second Grade.
Using the Developmental Reading Assessment for the levels that the child is reading on, the children in kindergarten and first grade choose on “Book Choice Day” two books on reading level. Then, on another day the child gets to choose three more books that are “reach” or high interest books. All five books are gifts that go home in a cool bag on June 20th – Vernon’s Book Day! Thanks to Mrs. Gebhardt for her support of this program.
Rolling Hills and Cedar Mountain: The Competition Begins!
USING THE DEVELOPMENTAL READING ASSESSMENT AS AN INDICATOR OF PRESENT READING LEXILE LEVELS, MRS. QUE AND MRS. WALKER WILL BE SETTING UP A BOOK FAIR IN THEIR ROOMS AFTER THE DRAS ARE OVER. USING THE ASSESSMENTS FROM THE PREVIOUS WEEK THEY WILL INSTRUCT STUDENTS TO MAKE TWO CHOICES OF “ON-LEVEL” READING BOOKS AND THREE “FOR FUN” CHOICES!
A BIG “THANK YOU” TO MR. SCHMIDT AND MR. MUDRICK FOR THEIR SUPPORT OF THIS PROGRAM!
In both Cedar Mountain and Rolling Hills the principals have agreed to have a contest with their students. If 80% of all the books given out (5 books per student)are read and a signed book log is returned then a “Fall Fun Day” of literacy and games will be awarded to each school.
One Book, One Grade! Lounsberry!
Tales from “The Hollow:” The exiting students from Cedar Mountain and Rolling Hills are going to be greeted by Mrs. Rostami, Mrs. Schiano, Ms. Sabia with the book Wonder by RJ Palacio. This “one book, one grade” moment is a first of its kind for Lounsberry. The children will read the book over the summer and prepare for the first week of school with the summer reading assignment. The assignment will ask them to compare a character in the book to themselves. Upon entering Lounsberry as a new student they will, in their new classes, introduce themselves by discussing who they are most like in the novel. Thanks to Dr. Stumper and Ms. Piszczek for their funding of this project!
Lounsberry Hollow! It is your choice: • For our incoming 6th graders
there will be a book fair in Mrs. Schiano’s library. The children will come in with their language arts teachers and learn through video trailers and discussion about the genres these five novels. They will then choose their summer book. This event will happen on June 20th. They will be allowed to begin reading right there! At the end of the day they take their gift from Dr. Stumper and Mrs. Piszczek home for the summer.
