I am 62-years-old and having diabetes for the past 22 years. I am taking insulin and oral drugs for diabetes. When will be oral insulin available to us?

This is one of the common questions which is being asked by several diabetes patients. An Indian bio-tech & pharmaceutical company is doing research and development in oral insulin. Insulin is a protein hormone. Once insulin is taken by oral method, it will be destroyed by our normal gastric acids. So as to avoid insulin destruction and enhance the insulin secretion in the gut, bio-tech modified insulin is needed. Oral insulin manufactured by an Indian company is under phase III trial. Once it completes phase IV trial, oral insulin will be made available in the market. Hope soon we will be able to get oral insulin.

Since diabetes manifest due to lack of insulin secretion or action or both, administering insulin is the best treatment option for diabetes patients.
