• Before storing the appliance make sure thatit has completely cooled down.

• This appliance is equipped with safety devi-ces which are to be replaced only by a suita-bly qualified technician.

• Do not direct the steam jet at people, ani-mals or debris.

• Never place your hands inside the jet ofsteam.

• When Refilling the boiler, use HOT ratherthan cold water, pour in gently at first andkeep exposed skin and your face away.Otherwise the still hot tank walls can spitdrops of very hot water or steam spray.

• Do not put any detergent or chemical sub-stance in the boiler. Water by its nature con-tains magnesium, mineral salts and otherdeposits which in hard water areas can con-tribute to limescale build up in the boiler. Toavoid these problems, it is necessary to swillout with tapwater and empty the boiler afterevery 3 or 4 uses.In very hard water areaswe recommend the use of our KALSTOP, aspecial natural-base decalcifier which inhi-bits and breaks down limescale, making iteasy to remove just by swilling out the tankwith a little tapwater. This is a preventiveagainst scale build-up and protects the me-tal walls of the steam generator tank. KAL-STOP is available from Polti dealers or bymail-order from your Polti Service Centre.

• We recommend you use original Poltiproducts only, as products of otherbrands may not be suitable for use inPolti products and could cause damage.

• Never use distilled water or scented wa-ter.

• Make sure the patented safety cap is fullyand correctly screwed on, otherwise youmay experience steam escaping fromaround the cap.

• Check periodically the safety cap and MAKESURE the rubber gasket is in place aroundthe base of the screw thread. Replace with original spare parts if neces-sary. DO NOT USE the appliance if the rub-ber gasket is not in position.

• Do not refill the tank while it is still hot, allowit to cool down for a few minutes before refil-ling.

• Do not empy the appliance when the waterin the boiler is still hot.

• Do not try to unscrew the safety cap whenthe appliance is in use.

• If you iron sitting down, do not put your legsunder the ironing board, the steam cancause burns.

• Iron only on heat resistant surfaces and onsurfaces that allow the steam to escape, e.g.mesh ironing boards.

• The iron must be used and rested on a sta-ble surface.

• When placing the iron on its stand, makesure that the surface on which the stand isplaced is stable.

• This appliance is not intended for use bypersons (including children) with reducedphysical, sensory or mental capabilities, orlack of experience and knowledge, unlessthey have been given supervision or instruc-tion concerning use of the appliance by aperson responsible for their safety.

The crossed-out wastebasket symbolon the appliance means that at the endof its useful lifespan, the product mustbe disposed of separately from ordi-nary household wastes.

The user is responsible for delivering the ap-pliance to an appropriate collection facility atthe end of its useful lifespan. Appropriate separate collection to permit recy-cling, treatment and environmentally compati-ble disposal helps prevent negative impact onthe environment and human health and pro-motes recycling of the materials making up theproduct. For more information on available col-lection facilities, contact your local waste col-lection service or the shop where you boughtthis appliance.

IIMMPPOORRTTAANNTTBefore leaving our factory all our products arerigorously tested. For this reason, your VAPO-RETTO may contain some residual water inthe boiler from the testing.

SSEETT UUPPBefore using VAPORETTO for the first time as-semble the pivoting wheels as indicated in theFig. A.

PPRREEPPAARRAATTIIOONN FFOORR UUSSEE1. Unscrew the patented safety cap (A) and

fill the boiler with about 2 litres of waterusing the filler bottle (14) making sure thatit does not overflow (fig. 1). Normal tapwa-ter can be used. However, as hard waterby its nature contains limestone, whichmay cause a build-up of limescale in thetank, in hard water areas we recommendthe use of our natural-base decalcifierKALSTOP, available from your Polti dealeror by mail order from your Polti serviceCentre.

2. Carefully screw on the safety cap to handtight (Fig. 2). Make sure the patented sa-fety cap (A) is fully and correctly screwedon, otherwise you may experience steamescaping from around the cap.

3. Connect the power supply cable (F) into anearthed power supply of the correct vol-tage.

WARNING: Do NOT under any circumstances

put or leave the filler bottle in the water fillingaperture of the appliance when the applianceis connected to the mains electricity supply.Danger of burns!

IINNSSTTRRUUCCTTIIOONNSS FFOORR UUSSEE1a. Press down the generator on/off switch (B)

and the accessories on/off switch (C) wichwill light up together with the pressure indi-cator light (K).

2a. Open the cover of the central connectorblock (D) and insert the central connector(4) pressing the connector button (5) andtaking care that the locking tab (6) is cor-rectly positioned in the lock-in aperture (E)on the block (Fig. 3).

3a. When the pressure indicator (K) goes off,the steam cleaner is ready for use.

4a. The steam gun (2) is equipped with a sa-fety switch (2A) which prevents the acci-dental start of the steam jet by children orpeople who do not know how to operatethe appliance. With the switch (2A) in the “OFF” position, the lever controlling the steam jet islocked (Fig.4b). Should the hose be leftunattended for a moment whilst the ap-pliance is connected to the mains, it is re-commended to put the safety switch in the“OFF” position. To start working, set the(2A) button to the “ON” position and pressthe steam button (Fig.4a).

The first burst of steam may contain somewater droplets, due to imperfect thermicstabilisation inside the flexible hose. Wewould therefore advise that the first jet ofsteam is played onto an old cloth until aconstant pressure of steam is obtained.Note: The pressure indicator (K) may go onand off from time to time during use of VAPO-RETTO. This indicates the machine maintainsthe correct and constant pressure and is quitenormal.

SSTTEEAAMM RREEGGUULLAATTIIOONN FFEEAATTUURREEVAPORETTOs are equipped with a steam re-gulator control (I) (Fig. 5). You can increasethe steam flow by turning the control in an anti-clockwise direction. Turning it in a clockwisedirection reduces the steam flow. Here aresome suggestions for the choice of steam flow

that the soleplate of the iron has reachedthe required temperature.

4d. Press the steam request button (R) to en-able the steam to come out. The steamflow will stop when the button is released. After each filling, when you first start to usethe iron, a few drops of water mixed withthe steam may be emitted (due to imper-fect heat stabilisation). It is therefore advis-able to direct the first jet of steam onto arag.

5d. The iron can also be used in a vertical po-sition e.g. for removing creases from cur-tain, clothing etc.

6d. To obtain a continuous jet of steam movethe sliding button (U). The steam will con-tinue to come out even when the steam re-quest button (R) is released. To stop theflow of steam push the sliding button (U)backwards. NOTE: using the iron, it is advisable to ad-just the steam jet at medium output, or todo some testing in order to find the jetwhich is most suitable to the fabric to beironed.RECOMMENDED TECHNIQUE for steamironing with the Polti iron is to APPLYsteam (button R) on the upstroke, then re-lease button R (so no steam) for the back-stroke, thus reclosing the fibres, preventingoversteaming and wetness.

DRY IRONING• If you need to DRY iron (ONLY) (NOT steam

ironing), press the accessory on/off switch(C) and adjust the temperature of the iron bysetting the dial (S) to the temperature re-quired for the fabric (as shown on the dial). ATTENTION: when dry ironing, be carefulnot to press the steam request button (R), ashot water could come out of the iron ontoyour garment and board.

IIMMPPOORRTTAANNTT• Do not leave the iron unattended whilst con-

nected to the mains. • Iron only on heat resistant surfaces and on

surfaces that allow the steam to escape e.g.MESH ironing boards.

• ATTENTION: if you iron sitting down, do notplace your legs under the ironing board, thesteam can cause burns.

WARNINGS• DO NOT USE ON leather, wood or delicate

fabrics especially dralon, velvet and otherpile surfaces.

• For cleaning leather, wood or delicate fa-brics especially dralon, velvet and other pilesurfaces, consult the manufacturers instruc-tions. Clean only by using the hand gun at asafe distance together with a soft cloth andalways do a test on a non visible part of theitem first or on a sample.Allow the test area to dry completely beforeobserving results and effects on surface orcolour before proceeding to clean furtherareas.

• For cleaning wood surfaces (furniture, doorsetc.) take great care as a too long applica-tion of the steam could alter the waxed ap-pearance, the shine or the colour of the sur-faces cleaned. We therefore recommendyou to apply the steam on such surfacesonly for brief periods or to clean these surfa-ces using a cloth first held in the steam.

• Please pay particular attention while clea-ning brick floors: a too long application ofsteam could damage wax, brightness or co-lour of these surfaces.

• For delicate surfaces (e.g. synthetic mate-rials, lacquered surfaces etc.) we recom-mend that the small brush should always becovered with at least two cloths to reducethe intensity of the steam, and (on machineswith steam variation control) with the steamset at low level. Always test first on a non-vi-sible area, allow to dry thoroughly, and ifsuccessful, make sure to use exactly thesame tool, technique, steam level and steamjet distance.

• If cleaning glass surfaces in particularly lowtemperatures preheat the glass using thehand gun from about 50 centimetres di-stance from the surface to be cleaned.

• For care of your plants vaporise at a mini-mum distance of 50 centimetres.

sistant the stain, the closer you should hold thegun, the steam pressure and temperaturebeing higher at the source. Always wipe with adry cloth (or a slightly abrasive sponge if thespot is a difficult one to remove) after using thegun. Steam gun is particularly efficient at: • breaking down rug and carpet stains before

they are treated with the large brush;• cleaning stainless steel surfaces, panes,

mirrors, enamelled surfaces;• cleaning hard-to-reach corners, such as

stairs, window sills, door posts;• cleaning cooking top knobs, taps bases• cleaning window shutters, heaters, car inte-

riors;• spraying plants (from a distance);• removing odours and creases from clothes. To reach higher points, the steam gun can beconnected to one or both extension tubes.

LARGE BRUSH (8)To wash floors, put a clean, dry kitchen clothunder the brush and swing back and forthwithout applying any pressure. Use the otherside of the cloth when the first one is impre-gnated with dirt. Use the brush directly withoutthe cloth on particularly dirty or incrusted areasand in spaces between the tiles: swing thebrush sideways to detach the dirt. Highly obsti-nate stains may require a steam gun treatmentbefore the brush and cloth are used (an oldbath towel is an ideal cloth) . Apply the sameprocedure to ceilings and vertical surfaces, likewallpaper. The cloth can easily be fastenedaround the brush and held in place by the 4clips (9) on the brush itself. Smooth cottoncloths are suitable for the treatment of glasssurfaces: fasten the cloth around the brushthen pass it over the window pane (or mirror)to remove the greasy film. Finally, spray thesurface with the steam gun and wipe dry with aclean cloth. In cold weather, window panes willrequire pre-heating with the steam gun (from adistance of 50 cm), prior to the actual cleaningwith the the brush. VAPORETTO is ideal forboth syntetic and wool rugs as well as for alltypes of carpets. Its use ensures total hygiene, revives colours and restores the original bril-liance of the pile. Drying occurs practically atonce. Fold a cotton cloth over 2 or 3 times (ac-cording to the length and resistance of the pile)and fasten it onto the brush. Move the brush

rapidly in all directions without applying anypressure. You should avoid lingering in thesame place, as this may soak the area. Thetreatment can be repeated as frequently asyou wish, with no damage whatsoever. Dryingoccurs practically at once.Particularly dirtyrugs may need several treatments. Obstinatestains may require the use of the steam gun(at a distance of 5-10 cm) prior to treatment.

SMALL BRUSH (12)The small brush is used whenever the bigbrush is too big or not practical to be used. The small brush can be connected directly tothe steam gun or to the extension tubes. Thesmall brush can be used on:• furnishing fabrics (after testing on small

parts)• velvets and leather (not too close)• car linings, car windows • small window surfaces• tile and other small surfacesTo clean wood ( doorposts , floors etc) do notapply the steam directly but cover the brush(big or small) with a doubled cotton cloth. Forfurniture cleaning, direct the steam jet onto adry cotton cloth, and then start the cleaning. The warm moisture on the cloth traps the dust, spots and the static electricity so that the furni-ture stays clean longer.

120° STEAM ACCESSORY (16)The 120° accessory (which can be connecteddirectly to the gun or together with the exten-sion tubes) allows you to concentrate a power-ful jet of steam to otherwise inaccessible loca-tions, such as radiators, door posts, sills andshutters, as well as for sterilising toilet bowls. It’s a very useful and indispensable tool.

WINDOW SQUEEGEE TOOL (18,19,20) The window squeegee tool allows you to cleaneffectively and rapidly all glass surfaceswithout using detergents. Your glass will re-main cleaner longer thanks to the absence ofthe film normally left behind by chemical clea-ning products on which new dust and greasecan attach themselves.Cleaning glass is done in two stages:• Spray the steam onto the surface to be

cleaned to loosen the dirt (not touching withthe blade).

• Pull the blade straight down the window sur-face from top to bottom without applying the
