FRAN CUMMINGSThe Titan family lost a popular longtime member when former women’s volleyball Head Coach Fran Cummings passed away on May 31, 2005, at the age of 51, after a bout with breast cancer.

Cummings coached at Cal State Fullerton from the 1980 through 1988 seasons. It was a transitional time for Titans’ women’s athletics -- a young, still developing Div. I program thrust into a conference (Western Collegiate Athletic Association) that included UCLA, USC, San Diego State, Arizona, Arizona State and Long Beach State. When the Pacific Coast Athletic Association embraced women’s sports beginning in 1985, her program was confronted by such budding powers as Pacific and Hawai’i, both eventual national champions.

Victories were hard to come by those nine seasons, along with financial resources, but Cummings didn’t openly lament her situation. She focused on the competitive matches and outside of conference she posted a respectable 75-89 record.

In 1984, she and her husband, Rod, welcomed twin sons Michael and Eric into the world. Upon leaving Fullerton she continued to coach for several years at Saddleback College and later she became an administrator and served as director of athletics at Santiago Community College in Orange.

A memorial service was held June 5, at Pacific Country Club in San Clemente. The Fran Cummings Memorial Scholarship Fund was set up to accept donations in her name at Santiago Community College -- Attention SCC Foundation, 8045 E. Chapman Ave., Orange, CA 92868.

TITAN GYMTitan Gym continues to undergo major renovations.

In the past few years, chairback seats have replaced

most of the bleachers, new paint and banners have

been applied to the walls, the playing surface has

been redone and a new sound system has been

installed. Recently completed was an expansion

that features numerous classrooms, physical test-

ing laboratories, a new upstairs practice facility,

as well as additional seating. A new “drop down”

scoreboard over center court was installed in the

spring of 2003. The facility also features practice

and match rooms for the wrestling, gymnastics and

fencing programs.

Entering her fourth full season as the Titans’ head coach, Carolyn Zimmerman continues to build Cal State Fullerton into a contender in the always-tough Big West Conference.

In just three seasons, Carolyn Zimmerman has steered the Titans from a five-win program in 2002 to a 14-win program in 2004 – the third-best victory total in the school’s history. Her efforts especially paid off at Titan Gym as her Titans compiled a school-best home record of 13-4, shattering the 1996 squad’s record of nine wins. She also guided that team to six wins in Big West Conference play, tying the school record set by the 1995 team.

Under Zimmerman’s tutelage Fullerton has produced three All-Big West Conference honorable mentions in Kim Levey (2002), Tif-fany Dolven (2004) and three-time honoree Lauren Goins (2002-04), and has posted two pre-season tournament championships (both in 2004) and a pair of second-place finishes (both in 2003).

Zimmerman is no stranger to the Titan program, serving as the top assistant to former head coach Mary Ellen Murchison for seven seasons (1995-2001) until Murchison’s retirement prior to the 2002 season. Zimmerman was named interim head coach for that season and was hired on a permanent basis in 2003.

Prior to joining the staff at Fullerton, Zimmer-man was an assistant at Cal State Northridge in 1994, when the Matadors posted a 23-8 record and captured the NIVC title in postseason play. In 1995, she guided her South Bay 17-U Vol-leyball club team to a fourth-place finish at the prestigious Nike Volleyball Festival. She was also a varsity assistant and junior varsity head coach at perennial prep powerhouse Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach.

Zimmerman is a 1992 graduate of Pepperdine, where she was the setter/right-side hitter for four West Coast Conference championship squads. A four-year letterwinner and three-year captain for the Waves, Zimmerman earned

first-team All-WCC honors three times and was named the conference’s Player of the Year and a Volleyball Monthly honorable mention All-American in 1991. She was also a member of the gold-medal winning south team at the Olympic Festival in Los Angeles in 1990.

She wrapped up her Pepperdine career as the Waves’ all-time leader in digs with 1,371 and stood third in block assists, fourth in total blocks and service aces, and eighth in kills and total attacks. She also set a Pepperdine single-season record with 383 digs in 1990.

Zimmerman is a 1988 graduate of West Tor-rance High, where she was a three-sport star. In addition to earning Bay League volleyball MVP honors as a senior, she was an All-American in soccer and CIF champion and state qualifier in track and field. She was named West Torrance’s Athlete of the Year in 1987 and 1988.

Zimmerman resides in Redondo Beach with her husband, Joe, sons Jimmy and Danny, and daughter Kira.

This year’s fund raiser again looks promising as

single-season dig record holder Vanessa Vella returns

to the floor to lead the Titans in this important cause.

Former Titan Head Coach Mary Ellen Murchison, a

two-time breast cancer survivor, initiated the event

during her tenure at Fullerton from 1992-2001.

MARY ELLEN MURCHINSON

In an effort to raise both awareness and dollars in the fight against breast cancer, the Cal State Fullerton women’s volleyball team will again conduct its “Dig for the Cure” fund-raiser in the month of October.

The event raises funds for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, a foundation that provides a broad

range of services for breast cancer patients and survivors.

For each dig collected in the month of October the Titans will be donating a portion of their sponsorships to the

Susan G. Komen Foundation. The remainder will be going to help support Cal State Fullerton volleyball.

The Big West has established an impeccable pedi-gree in the sport of women’s volleyball entering its 22nd season of conference sponsorship.

Six national championships. Eight national Players of the Year. Over one hundred All-America awards. Three National Coaches of the Year. Since 1984, the Big West Conference has enjoyed unparalleled success in the sport of women’s volleyball and has positioned itself as the nation’s elite conference.

The Big West has sent a representative to the Final Four in 14 of its 21 years as a volleyball conference. In 2001, Long Beach State earned its eighth trip to the Final Four and reached the national champion-ship match for the fourth time. The conference currently is riding a seven-year streak of sending at least four schools to the postseason, and a two-year streak of sending six teams to the tournament. The Big West never has sent less than three teams to the NCAA Tournament in any given year.

UC Santa Barbara and Pacific are two of only four programs in the entire nation to have competed in all 24 NCAA Tournaments. In addition, Big West schools have tallied an impressive 97-53 record (.647) against non-conference opponents all-time in the NCAA Tournament.

In 1999, the Big West comprised half of the con-tingent at the Final Four in Honolulu, Hawai’i, with the presence of Long Beach State and Pacific. It marked the first time since 1994 that two teams from the same conference competed at the pres-tigious event.

The alumni who have competed in the Big West reads like a Who’s Who of volleyball superstars. Long Beach State’s Misty May, a two-time NCAA Player of the Year, is widely considered the best col-legiate volleyball player ever. She is now known as one of the world’s top beach players. Long Beach State’s Tara Cross and Danielle Scott, and Pacific’s Elaina Oden have contributed greatly to the suc-cess of the United States Olympic Team in indoor volleyball. The conference was represented in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, by the LBSU trio of Tara Cross, Danielle Scott and Tayyiba Haneef.

The quality of coaching in the Big West is top notch. Two of the nation’s all-time winningest coaches are in the Big West – Long Beach State’s Brian Gim-millaro and UC Santa Barbara’s Kathy Gregory. Gimmillaro’s .812 career winning percentage ranks third all-time among active coaches, while Gregory became only the sixth coach in NCAA history to surpass the 700-win career mark.
