I have fallen into a helpless condition, bound with the rope of pratiñöhäby the highwaymen lust, greed and anger. I implore those heroicpersonalities (headed by Çré Svarüpa, Çré Rüpa and Çré Sanätana) whoprotect the path of bhakti by which one attains Aghäré Çré Hari, thedestroyer of sin, to defeat my captors and cut the ropes that are bind-ing me.

The disembodied Kämadeva, who attained a body by continuallytasting the nectar of the sight of Çré Yugala, eternally illuminatesthe entire Vraja with a jubilant festival of Çré Kåñëa’s amorouspastimes. When will my heart be laden with love so that I canwitness the confidential play of Çré Çré Gändharvä-Giridhäré, thecrown jewels of innocent, young, beautiful couples?

The city of Dvärakä—where Bhagavän resides with His relatives,including His brother and sons, and where He enjoys pastimes with agreat multitude of queens, each eclipsing many hundreds of Lakñmésin virtues, beauty and good fortune—is dearer even than Vaikuëöha.But Mathurä, due to being the place of Kåñëa’s birth, and being theabode and embodiment of the purest prema, is even more dear thanDvärakä. Within the district of Mathurä, the land of Çré Vraja manifestsin all its splendor. I eternally worship the land of Mathurä.

Even today Çré Mädhava enjoys the sweet nectar of transcendentalpastimes there, lovingly herding the cows with His brother Baladeva

and His dearly beloved sakhäs. The astonishing sweetness of thisplace appears in the hearts of the rasika devotees. I take shelter ofVraja, which is more precious even than Mathurä.

Surrounded by their witty and clever gopé friends, the youthful coupleKiçora-Kiçoré day and night lose themselves in an unending play ofamorous enjoyment in the kuïjas and mountain caves of Våndävana,dense with trees, bushes and blossoming vines. I worship thewonderful forest of Våndävana, delightfully saturated with theintoxicating aroma of Their lotus feet.

In Våndävana is the hamlet of Nandéçvara, where the goddess of for-tune Kamalä always wanders around looking for service; where thegreat mystic perfections, seeking to serve the Vrajaväsés, are presentin full; where the cows, accepting service from everyone, enjoy everincreasing opulences; where the Vrajaväsés live in topmost bliss; andwhere Çré Kåñëa freely enjoys Himself under the loving protection ofHis parents. I worship this town Nandéçvara, the home of Vrajaräja ÇréNanda Mahäräja and the most exalted place within his kingdom

For the welfare of his son, the king of Gokula, Çré Nanda Mahäräja,daily pleases the brähmaëas by respectfully presenting them with

sweets, ambrosial beverages and celestial cows decorated with manyjewels. Satisfying them with these valuable donations, he repeatedlybegged their blessings for his baby boy. I worship the king of Gokula,who is always absorbed in thoughts of his son.

TEXT 10putra-sneha-bharaiù sadä-snuta-kuca-dvandvä tadéyocchalad

gharmmasyäpi lavasya rakñaëa-vidhau sva-präëa-dehärvudaiùäsaktä kñaëa-mätram apy akalanät sadyaù prasüteva gaurvyagrä yä vilapaty alaà bahu-bhayät sä pätu goñöheçvaré

Because of Goñöheçvaré’s immense love for her darling son, a con-tinuous flow of milk trickles from her breasts. She is prepared to giveher life many millions of times to protect Him from even a singledrop of perspiration, and she is so attached to Him that if for amoment she cannot see Him she cries like a cow frightened forher newborn calf. May Yaçodä, the queen of Vraja, protect us.

I worship Rohiëé-devé, who showers her love upon Govinda morethan on her own son Haladhara. She is thoroughly expert in the art ofcooking, she delights the queen of Vraja with the brilliance of hersincere friendship and she gladdens Nanda Mahäräja, the king ofcowherders, with her saintly virtues.

durväroddäma-dhäma-prakara-ripu-ghaöonmäda-vidhvaàsi-gandhaùsnehäd apy unnimeñaà nijam anujam ito ’raëya-bhümau sva-vétaàtad-véryajïo ’pi yo na kñaëam apanayate staumi taà dhenukärim

I joyfully praise Çré Baladeva, the enemy of Denukäsura, whose bodilyeffulgence shines brightly like many millions of glistening moons,who easily destroys even a whiff of the false pride of the most sinful

and formidable demons with His boundless power, and who althoughknowing full well the supernatural strength of His younger brotherÇré Kåñëa, still, out of immense love for Him never lets Him out of Hissight in the woods even for a moment.

TEXT 13parjanya-nämä nija-naptå-garvaiùparjanya-lakñäëy abhito vinindan

yo narma tanvan ramate ’sya karëenamämy aho kåñëa-pitämahaà tam

Aho! I offer praëäma unto Çré Kåñëa’s paternal grandfather, ÇréParjanya-gopa, who proclaims his pride in having Kåñëa as his grand-son in a voice that mocks the roaring of millions of thunderclouds,and who always delights his grandson by speaking many joking wordsin His ear.

TEXT 14priyasya naptuù sukhato ’ti-garvät

pädau na yasyäù patataù påthivyämnamämi narmärcita-naptå-candräà

varéyaséà kåñëa-pitämahéà täm

I offer praëäma to Varéyasé-devé, Kåñëa’s paternal grandmother. Withmerry joking words she worships Çré Kåñëa, calling Him the moon ofgrandsons. Happy and proud of her grandson, her feet no longertouch the ground when she walks.

TEXT 15çveta-çmaçru bhareëa sundara-mukhaù çyämaù kåté mantraëä-bhijïaù samsadi santataà vraja-pateù kurvan sthitià yo ’rcitaù

sva-präëärvvuda-khaëòanair mura-bhidaà bhrätuù sutaà toñayetsähäre nivasan sa goñöham avatän nämnopanandaù sadä

His face handsome with a great white beard, and his complexiondark, the pious Upananda is the respected prime minister in the councilof the king of Vraja. He is prepared to give up his life millions oftimes over to please his nephew Çré Kåñëa. I pray that Upananda,who lives in the village of Sähära, may always protect the land ofVraja.

May we always be protected by Nanda Mahäräja’s younger brotherSannanda, whose complexion is golden and whose beard is black;who is tender, generous and affectionate; who is deeply devoted tohis older brother’s feet; who is the father of Sunandä-gopé; who is themaster of a great herd of cows who have mothered many calves; andwho worships his nephew Mädhava with every breath and pleasesHim by giving Him palatable dishes made with fresh yoghurt.

TEXT 17çyämaù sükñma-matir yuväti-madhuro jyotir-vidäm agraëéù

päëòityair jita-géñpatir vrajapateù savye kåtävasthitiùkåñëaà pälayatéha yaù priyatayä präëärvudair apy alaà

mantreëäpy upananda-sünum iha taà prétyä subhadraà numaù

Upananda’s son Subhadra is dark complexioned, youthful, handsome,intelligent, and mild natured. He is the best of astrologers and morelearned than even Båhaspati. Always at the left side of the King ofVraja, he gives good advice for protecting Kåñëa, who is millions oftimes more dear to him than his own life. With great love I offerpraëäma unto Subhadra.

TEXT 18daityäd bhéter ati-vikala-dhéù komaläìgasya sünoùkåñëasyoccaiù satatam avane vatsalä vyagra-cittä

kåcchrair ambäà bahubhir abhito hanta santoñya çüraàdaitya-ghnaà yä sutam ajanayat sämbikä pätu dhätré

Frightened that the delicate Kåñëa may be hurt by the demons, Ambikäperformed severe austerities for many days to please Goddess Pärvaté.Satisfied, Devé granted her a heroic son who was able to kill manydemons. May Çré Kåñëa’s wet nurse Ambikä, whose mind is alwaysabsorbed in maternal affection for Him, protect us.

TEXT 19nädair yasya sphuöati parito divya-vidhy-aëòa-koöiù

ke te tävat kila diti-sutäù kñudrakät kñudra-jéväùsnehän mäträ vijayam abhito rakñaëe sanniyuktaà

kåñëasyärät param iha bhaje hanta dhätré-sutaà tam

Saying “Where are the demons? With ease I shall shorten their lives,”Vijaya, the son of Kåñëa’s wet nurse, calls so loudly that his roaringvoice causes millions of spiritual universes to crack, what to speak ofthe demons, who are the most insignificant of living beings! Out ofmaternal affection for Kåñëa, Ambikä instructed her son Vijaya toalways stay near little Kåñëa to protect Him. I worship Vijaya, theson of Kåñëa’s wet nurse.

TEXT 20mantra-nyäsair iha mura-ripos tat-purodhäù purastät

sarväìgäni prakaöa-nigamo bhägurir yo ’bhirakñyaäçérbhiç ca prati-dinam aho tac-chiro jighratédaà

vande tävan muni-sura-pates tasya pädäbja-yugmam

Bhäguré Muni, the learned chief priest of Vraja-pura, is the shelter ofthe personified Vedas, who pray to him for some small service to ÇréNanda-nandana. Daily, while touching every part of Çré Kåñëa Muräri’sbody he ceremoniously recites mantras to Bhagavän Näräyaëa forthe protection of each of the child’s limbs. And daily he smells andkisses Kåñëa’s head while offering Him many benedictions. I bowdown and offer praëäma to the king of all sages, Bhäguré Muni.

TEXT 21kåñëasyoccaiù praëaya-vasatiù sampravéëaù sakhénäàçyämäìgas tat-sama-guëa-vayo-veça-saundarya-darpaùsnehäd vandhoù kñaëam akalanäj jäyate yo ’vadhütaùçrédämänaà hari-sahacaraà sarvadä taà prapadye

I fully take shelter of Kåñëa’s constant companion Çrédämä, who neverleaves Kåñëa for an instant, who is the object of Kåñëa’s profuse love,who is the most skillful and clever of the sakhäs, whose complexionis dark, who is proud that his qualities, age, clothing and handsomefeatures closely resemble those of Kåñëa, and who trembles withanxiety if he cannot see his friend for even a single moment.

TEXT 22gäòhänuräga-bharato virahasya bhétyä

svapne ’pi gokula-vidhor na jahäti hastamyo rädhikä-praëaya-nirjhara-sikta-cetäs

taà prema vihvala-tanuà subalaà namämi

I offer praëäma unto Subala, the embodiment of very concentratedand ever fresh änuräga, who adores Kåñëa, the moon of Gokula, somuch that when they are separated at night, he weeps and prays tothe moon for morning to come so that he can be with Kåñëa again, andwhen sleeping, even in his dreams he is playing with his friend andnever lets go of His hand. His heart is overwhelmed in prema,remembering how his friend Kåñëa enjoys the greatest happinesswhen meeting with Çrématé Rädhikä and He is bathing in a cascadeof Her praëaya. Indeed, Subala lives for this.

TEXT 23kåttvaikatra gaväà kuläni paritaù kåñëena särddhaà mudähastähasti-vinoda-narma-kathanaiù khelanti mitrotkaräù

premämbhodhi-vidhauta-gaurava-mahä-paìkäs tad-aìkärcitästat-pädärpita-citta-jévita-kalä ye tän prapadyämahe

Gathering together all the läkhas and läkhas of cows scattered hereand there, Kåñëa’s cowherd boyfriends take great delight as they movealong in playfully pulling each other by the arm [grabbing Kåñna’spalm and reading the lines of His fortune, and joking about Kåñëa’smeeting with His beloved]. They have not a scent of aiçvarya-bhävain their hearts—the mud of awe and reverence has been completelywashed away by the water from the ocean of their pure sakhya-bhäva.I take shelter of these sakhäs, who are decorated with all the apparelof cowherders, like horns and sticks, and who have placed their hearts,lives, knowledge and their everything as an offering at Kåñëa’s lotusfeet.

TEXT 24mürto häsya-rasaù sadaiva sumanäù kämaà bubhukñäturaù

präëa-preñöha-vayasyayor anudinaà väg-deha-bhaìgy-utkaraiùhäsyaà yo madhumaìgalaù prakaöayan sambhräjate kautukétaà våndävana-candra-narma-sacivaà prétyä suvandämahe

With great loving respect I praise and glorify Våndävana Candra’spriya-narma-sakhä Madhumaìgala, who is the very personificationof häsya-rasa, the mellow of comedy. He is pure-hearted and everjovial because he is always with Kåñëa. As he is controlled by hunger,Kåñëa and the sakhäs enjoy teasing him and all laugh when he threat-ens with his curses. He is expert in drowning his dearmost friendsKåñëa and Balaräma in an ocean of laughter with his comical wordsand entertaining gestures.

TEXT 25güòhaà tat-su-vidagdhatärcita-sakhé-dväronnayanté tayoù

premnä suñöhu-vidagdhayor anudinaà mänäbhisärot-savamrädhä-mädhavayoù sukhämåta-rasaà yaivopabhuìkte muhur

goñöhe bhavya-vidhäyinéà bhagavatéà täà paurëamäséà bhaje

I worship Bhagavaté Paurëamäsé, who provides for the perpetual aus-piciousness of Vraja. With the help of the most expert sakhés, shesecretly makes wonderful arrangements for the clever Rädhä-Mädhava’s meetings. Nourishing Çré Yugala’s mäna (loving quarrels)and abhisära (nocturnal rendezvous) she again and again relishes theocean of nectar produced from these blissful festivals of love.

TEXT 26kharva-çmaçrum udäram ujjvala-kulaà gauraà samänaà sphurat

païcäçattama-varña-vandita-vayaù-kåäntià pravéëaà brajegoñöheçasya sakhäyam unnatatara-çrédämato ’pi priya-

çré-rädhaà våñabhänum udbhaöa-yaço-vrätaà sadä taà bhaje

I forever worship the renowned Våñabhänu Mahäräja, who sports aneatly clipped beard, who is very generous, who comes from a bril-liant dynasty, whose complexion is golden, who at age fifty is verywise and highly respected by everyone in Vraja, who is the mostintimate friend of Vraja’s King Nanda, and who loves his youngerdaughter Rädhä even more than he does his eldest child Çrédhamä.

TEXT 27anudinam iha mäträ rädhikä-bhavya-värttäù

kalayitum ati-yatnät preñyate dhätrikäyäùduhitå-yugalam uccaiù prema-püra-prapaïcair

Her mind overwhelmed with a flood of love, every day Kértidä-devéwithout fail sends the two unmarried girls of Rädhikä’s childhoodnanny to gather the news of her daughter’s activities in Jävaöa . [Lalitä,Viçäkhä and the maïjarés convey to them only good news, tellingabout Rädhikä’s happiness, never any bad news.] May Kértidä-devé,the mother of Çrématé Rädhikä, protect us.

TEXT 28prathama-rasa-viläse hanta roñeëa tävat

prakaöam iva virodhaà sandadhänäpi bhaìgyäpravalayati sukhaà yä navya-yünoù sva-naptroù

param iha mukharäà täà mürdhni våddhäà vahämi

I carry the dust of the lotus feet of elderly Mukharä-devé upon myhead. Pevishly and cleverly contriving many obstacles to impede theamorous pastimes of her two young grandchildren, Kiçora-Kiçoré, sheonly increases Their boundless bliss.

TEXT 29sändra-prema-rasaiù plutä priyatayä prägalbhyam äptä tayoùpräëa-preñöha-vayasyayor anudinaà léläbhisäraà kramaiù

vaidagdhyena tathä sakhéà prati sadä mänasya çikñäà rasairyeyaà kärayatéha hanta lalitä gåhnätu sä mäà gaëaiù

Flooded with the nectar of intense love for Yugala Kiçora, who aremore dear to her than her own life, Lalitä-devé, affectionately arro-gant in Their presence, daily arranges for Their rendezvous, and thenwith clever and nectarean words instructs her sakhé Rädhikä on howto best utilize Her mood of jealous anger. I pray Lalitä-devé will oneday accept me into her own party.

TEXT 30praëaya-lalita-narma-sphära-bhümis tayor yävraja-pura-nava yunor yä ca kaëöhän pikänäm

nayati param adhastäd divya gänena tuñöyäprathayatu mama dékñäà hanta seyaà viçäkhä

Viçäkhä-devé, who is the object of Yugala-Kiçora’s love and playfuljoking, pleases Them with Her divinely sweet singing that eclipseseven the cooing cuckoo. Aho! May Viçäkhä-devé be pleased with usand teach us the art of singing.

I throw myself at the lotus feet of Våndä-devé, who, filled with a greatflood of love, decorates the ever-fresh kuïjas of Våndävana with avast abundance of fragrant flowers, creating a festive atmosphere forÇré Çré Rädhä-Kåñëa and Their beloved sakhés to enjoy sweet pastimes.

päkärthaà yä vraja-pati-mahiñy-äjïayä sannayantépremëä çaçvat pathi-pathi harer värttayä tarpayanté

I worship Kuëòalatä-devé, who on the order of Queen Yaçodä dailycomes to Jävaöa to take Çrématé Rädhikä to Nanda Bhavan to cook forKåñëa, and, as she hurries Rädhikä along, she pleases Her with acontinuous narration of the latest news of Çré Hari. In turn, thecharming Kuëòalatä-devé, glowing with friendship and auspiciousplayfulness, becomes filled with happiness.

mudä kämaà nandéçvara giri-nikuïje praëayinéchalaiù kåñëaà rädhäà dayitam abhi täà särayati yädhaniñöùäà tat-präëa-priyatara-sakhéà täà kila bhaje

I worship Rädhä and Kåñëa’s dearmost sakhé Dhaniñöhä-devé, who,after Çré Rädhä has been brought on Vrajeçvaré’s order to cook forKåñëa in the morning, happily finds any pretext to arrange for ÇrématéRädhikä and Her beloved to meet in a kuïja on Nandéçvara Hill. Andwhen she brings Rädhikä from Jävaöa, she knows which path to takewhere they will come upon Kåñëa. Because she arranges these meet-ings, she is Rädhä’s life!

Her waters tinted and fragrant with kuìkuma, kastüré (musk) andcandana fallen from Çré Çré Rädhä-Kåñëa as They joyfully play in herwater, the Yamunä River happily smiles at Them with the smile ofher foam and softly splashes Them with the beautiful hands of herwaves. I pray that Yamunä, the daughter of the Sungod, may expandour happiness.

Çrématé Rädhikä’s priya-sakhés, having gone to fetch the supremelyblissful Çré Hari on the order of their beloved sakhé, find Him sittingalone in a solitary place. When He invites them to meet privatelywith Him and catches them by the hand, they vehemently reject Hisappeal. Pushing Him away, they spontaneously and angrily rebukeHim, “You will not find so much enjoyment with us. Our sakhé willgive You much more pleasure, so come with us.” Thus, they dailyarrange for Rädhä to meet with Her sweetheart. I place my head atthe feet of Çrématé Rädhikä’s priya-sakhés and pray for the day whenI will have the chance to do this sevä.

I worship Kåñëa’s servants, led by Patri, who in all circumstanceslovingly, enthusiastically and respectfully arrange for His happi-ness by bringing Him His flute, offering Him a mirror, water andbetel nuts scented with camphor, carrying messages for Him, andplaying véëä and other instruments for Him. Lovingly dividing upall these services amongst themselves, and acting like His sakhäs,they eternally attend to the Lord of their lives with body, mind andwords.

By offering Her betel nuts, massaging Her feet, bringing Her water,arranging for Her secret meetings with Çré Kåñëa, and performingvarious other services, countless gopé maidservants constantly pleaseÇré Rädhä, the queen of Våndävana forest. In their service to Yugala-Kiçora they are even less shy than the präëa-preñöha-sakhés, forwhom Çré Rädhä is more dear than life. I take shelter of these gopémaidservants, led by Çré Rüpa Maïjaré.

I worship Mädhava’s fortunate associates who consider the vast oceanof their own happiness to be as insignificant as a blade of grass, andwho filled with pure love for Çré Kåñëa, the enemy of the Mura demon,always lovingly and humbly strive to increase His happiness.

I worship Çrématé Rädhikä’s intimate däsés, who become so distraughtthat they appear as if dead if they cannot see their Sväminé even for amoment, who take their pleasure exclusively in Rädhikä’s pleasure,whose hearts are melted with affection for Her, and who enchantKåñëa with their pure characters and their single-pointed focus inliving only to bring joy to Yugala Kiçora.

I praise and glorify the highly fortunate rival gopés, who blossom withmany amorous desires and who have so much puëya that Govindabriefly enjoys amorous pastimes with them. Unable to satisfy Himfully, these competing gopés serve to enhance Çrématé Rädhikä’s for-tune, Her ecstatic bewilderment and Her pride in being the undis-puted heroine of çåìgära-rasa.

I forever worship the exalted gopas, who at every moment considerthemselves to be blessed with a happiness greater than all the happi-ness in the creation multiplied a million times over, who are protectedby Kåñëa with more prema than can be found in all the universes puttogether, and whose minds always remain fervently alert to protecteven the specks of dust falling from the tips of Kåñëa’s handsome lotustoenails.

I perpetually venerate the foot dust of the elder gopés, who, brim-ming over with motherly affection, most lovingly adulate the dropsof perspiration that trickle from Mukunda’s lotus feet, whom theylove more than their own sons and their own selves, and who repeat-edly kiss His head which is so nicely decorated with a peacock feather.

TEXT 44indranéla-khura-räjitäù paraà svarëa-baddha-vara-çåìga-raïjitäùpäëòu-gaëòa-giri-garva-kharvikäù päntu naù sapadi kåñëa-dhenavaù

Çré Kåñëa’s cows have very beautiful, bright blue hooves that shim-mer more than blazing sapphires. Their gold-studded horns are mostattractive, naturally looking like brilliant multi-colored gems, and theirradiant white humps cripple the pride of snow-capped mountainpeaks. May these cows ever protect us.

TEXT 45yäsäà pälana-dohanotsava-rataù särddhaà vayasyotkaraiù

I worship these cows, the daughters of Surabhi, who are alwayseager to engage Vrajendra-nandana, Balaräma, Çrédämä and the othercowherd boys in the joyful, daily festival of taking them out to grazeand milking them. Worshiped by Kåñëa and all the sakhäs, they coverthe boys and themselves with a mist of sparkling snow-like dustraised by their hooves as, filled with love, they roam around thedense forests, high mountains and river banks of Vraja.

All glories to Kåñëa’s pet bull Padmagandha, who is fragrant like alotus, whose handsome, gold-studded horns shimmer like manycolored jewels, whose charming hooves are more effulgent thanprecious sapphires, and around whose splendid white neck dancesa brilliant necklace made of red and white rope charmingly twistedtogether with bells and jewels.

Sometimes Kåñëa feeds the calves, lovingly placing small bunches oftender fresh grass in their mouths, and sometimes He gently scratchesand rubs their bodies. Oh, how I yearn to one day see Kåñëa’s calvesjumping and frolicking in Våndävana.

TEXT 48naktan-divaà mura-ripor adharämåtaà yäsphétä pibaty alam abädham aho subhägyäçré-rädhikä-prathita-mänam apéha divya

nädair adho nayati täà muraléà namämi

Aho! I continuously offer praëäma unto the most fortunate Muraléflute, who is nourished by deeply drinking the nectar of Kåñëa’s lipsday and night without obstruction, and who dissolves Çré Rädhikä’sgreat loving pique with her sweet sounds.

TEXT 49dütébhir bahu-cäöubhiù sakhi-kulenälaà vaco-bhaìgibhiùpädänte patanair vrajendra-tanayenäpi krudhälé-gaëaiùrädhäyäù sa hi çakyate davayituà yo naiva mäno yayä

phut-kåtyaiva nirasyate sukåtinéà baàçéà sakhéà täà numaù

Neither the flattering cajoling words spoken by Våndä and other gopémessengers, nor the gestures and jokes of Madhumaìgala and othersakhäs, nor the Prince of Vraja personally falling at Her feet and beg-ging Her to forgive Him, nor even the angry rebukes spoken by Herintimate friends were able to mollify Çrématé Rädhikä’s unrelentingmäna. Only Kåñëa’s flute, disdaining all previous useless attempts,was able to easily chase away Her jealous anger. I always glorify andoffer praëäma to this most fortunate sakhé, Kåñëa’s vaàçé.

I eagerly yearn to see Täëòavika, the king of peacocks. I rememberhow he bloomed with joy upon hearing the melody of Hari’s muralé,and how, when Rädhä-Kuïja Vihäri were enjoying in the nikuïja, hedelighted them by spreading out his tail-feathers and joyfully dancedbefore Their gate on the bank of Rädhä-kuëòa.

May we always be protected by Çré Govardhana, who becameworshipable when Çré Muräri for seven days lovingly held the hillaloft with His graceful hand to defend Vraja. May we always be pro-tected by Çré Govardhana, whose caves are colored with shiningkuìkuma particles falling from Gändharvä-Giridhäré as They enjoyamorous pastimes. May we always be protected by Çré Govardhana,whose boulders serve as beautiful jewelled sofas for the comfort ofYugala-Kiçora.

I take shelter of the supremely enchanting saìgam, named Keli-priya-sthala, where Rädhä-kuëòa and Çyäma-kuëòa meet. This is Rädhä-Mädhava’s favorite playground, and is especially enchanting beingfull of many campaka, beautiful young açoka, mango, näga-keçara andbakula trees and dense masses of lavaìga and mädhavé creepers.

What to speak of other places, the delightful forest of Våndävana,beautiful Govardhana Hill, and the Räsa-Sthali flowing with nectarare not equal to even a single particle of one of the atoms of Rädhä-kuëòa. I take shelter of this most special pond, which is as preciousto Mukunda as His dearmost beloved Çrématé Rädhikä Herself.

Rejecting many lavish golden pavilions studded with jewels andpearls as thoroughly paltry, I eternally worship Yugala-Kiçora’s pre-ferred pastime place, the brilliantly shining and fabulous mahä-kuïjaon the bank of Rädhä-kuëòa, where Yugala-Kiçora enjoy Themselvesblissfully absorbed in discussing at great length the humorous go-ings-on in the kingdom of Kämadeva, having appointed him as Theirminister of amorous affairs.

The creator Brahmä has beautifully fashioned Themfrom the fabric of good fortune, and They are the abode of thegreatest beauty within the three worlds. When will I be able todirectly serve my dearmost golden-bluish Yugala-Kiçora, beauti-ful like a streak of lightning flashing against a fresh, dark rain cloud?

I always eagerly worship Ariñöa-kuëòa (Çyäma-kuëòa), which is non-different from Çyäma Himself, which, upon the killing of the wickedAriñöäsura, automatically sprang from Kåñëa’s lotus feet just as nectarnaturally trickles from a blooming lotus. This pond, which holds Rädhä-kuëòa in an eternally tight embrace, is so dear to Çrématé Rädhikä thatwith Her own hand She lovingly beautified it with bathing staircases.

On the pretext of going to fetch clear water, the lotus-eyed gopésagain and again go to Pävana Sarovara where they meet Gopendra-nandana with great happiness and love. May Pävana Sarovara, whichis surrounded with many kadamba trees resounding with the pleas-ant humming of many bees, protect us by granting us residence on itsbank. [May Pävana Sarovara enable us to directly realize the sweet-ness of Yugala-Kiçora’s pastimes.]

Seeing that his son Vrajaräja Nanda had no offspring, GrandfatherParjanya Gopa went to the bank of Kñuëëähära Sarovara. There heworshiped Bhagavän Çré Näräyaëa by ardently fasting from food andwater in order to attain a worthy grandson who would be the abodeof all transcendental virtues, who could destroy all the demons andlift Govardhana Hill. May this sacred pond, which is known all overthe world as Kñuëëähära Sarovara (the lake of fasting), be our shelter.

Ordered by Brahmä speaking from the sky, Bhagavaté Çré Paurëamäsé-devé coronated Çrématé Rädhikä as queen of the super-excellentkingdom of Våndävana. Accompanied by Sävitri-devé and manyother joyfully dancing goddesses, she jubilantly performed Herabhiñeka ceremony with the waters of Mänasa-gaëgä and othersacred rivers. May this sacred place, known as Unmatta-Rädhä-sthalé (the place where Çrématé Rädhikä was showered with joy),shower us with great happiness.

As He was dancing with the intelligent, graceful and splendidly beau-tiful gopés, Çré Kåñëa, the subduer of the Mura demon, suddenly lefttheir company and went with Çrématé Rädhikä to a secluded place.There, after wonderfully decorating Her with many, many kinds offlowers, He greatly enjoyed intimate exchanges with Her. I pray thatthis sacred Räsa-sthalé, whose sweetness astonishes the residents ofall the three worlds, may grant us residence.

In the secluded caves of GovardhanaMädhava enjoys intimate pastimes with Çrématé Rädhikä.

While tending the cows in the summertime, Brajendra-nandana ÇréKåñëa jubilantly plays with His friends in the cool waters of the streamsand expansive lakes of Vraja. In their joking combat, both sides areeager for victory and vigorously splash each other as they enjoy theirsports. I eternally worship these lakes and streams where the son ofthe king of gopas enjoys with His sakhäs.

[Gopendra-nandana comes with His friends and cows to the banks ofthe streams and lakes to get refreshed. The inviting, cool breezesthere carry the fragrance of the surrounding flowers, causing Kåñëato remember His beloved Rädhä. Suddenly overwhelmed in separa-tion He begins to perspire (sveda). Seeing this, the breeze drops thefragrance of the flowers and replaces it with cool mist to relieve Kåñëaof His symptoms, but the breeze is not successful in alleviating Hisviraha. Kåñna turns to His sakhäs for relief and joins in their games,thus controlling His çåìgära-bhäva. The sakhäs invite Him to play inthe water for boating and swimming.]

Hearing the beautiful sound of Çrématé Rädhikä playing Her Kacchapévéëä accompanied by Çré Kåñëa playing His Muralé flute, the mostenchanting, best of deer become stunned with rapture. With half-chewed grass hanging from their mouths and with deep feelings offriendship, they surround Yugala-Kiçora, looking up to gaze uponTheir lotus faces. May these charming deer, who are full of love forÇré Yugala, give us the treasure of their ecstatic love and thus delightus at every moment.

Witnessingthese ever-fresh verbal contentions, the creepers of Vraja also smileand laugh, their profuse blossoms expressing their joy. May we servethese transcendental creepers with great love and devotion.

[The birds especially love to be with Çrématé Rädhikä, taking shelterof Her oceanic vätsalya-bhäva and Her prema, greater even thanKåñëa’s. The birds perform so many intimate services for Her—help-ing to arrange the léläs by carrying messages and letters to and fromKåñëa, warning when Jatila is coming, fanning Her with their wings,watching Her from the branches of the trees and singing just the rightsong to increase Her moods, and even knowing when to keep silent,being so in tune with Her heart. These birds, deeply drinking prema-rasa, become thoroughly intoxicated, lose control of themselves andforget who they are. May these birds, who are Rädhikä’s constantcompanions, delight me with their merciful glance and help me toreach their mistress. My heart is on fire without Her sevä, so I pray forthe cool shower of their glance. Because they are fully under Herprotection I pray that I may also come under Her wing. And may theyinspire me to sing Rädhä-Mädhava’s glories as sweetly and lovinglyas they do.]

Blooming with happiness Giridhäré, the king of the kuïjas, decoratesNikuïjeçvaré Çré Rädhä with many fully blossomed flowers that Hepicked from the grand kadamba tree outside Their kuïja. Her heartblossoming with joy as He covers Her with kadamba flowers, Shebrings Her beloved under control with Her crooked glances. May thatking of kadamba trees, who assists in Çré Yugala’s enjoyment, appearbefore me and enhance the pleasure of my eyes.

[Her eyes rolling in invitation, Nikuïjeçvaré signals to Giridhäré thatShe will certainly satisfy His earnest request for prema. His heartabounding with excitment, Giridhäré is anxious to do battle withNikuïjeçvaré’s two soldiers, and He happily prays, “I want to fightwith My two enemies.” Happily, Çrématé Rädhikä, now svädhénabhartåkä controlling Her beloved, immediately accepts His proposal.With great delight Nikuïjeçvara Çré Kåñëa decorates His sweetheartwith flowers from the nearby kadamba tree. From that tree’s manycolored and many sized blossoms He fashions earrings, nose stud,armlets and various other ornaments. He weaves flowers into Herhair and delicately places petals on Her cheeks in a charmingdesign.]

Greatly fearful that he had committed an offence to Çré Kåñëa, Sura-pati Indra humbly grasped His lotus feet. With the help of a Surabhicow, he performed Kåñëa’s abhiçeka festival, bathing Him with thewater of the celestial Ganges. Receiving the name ‘Govinda’ Kåñëawas established as king of the cows with great pomp and splendor. Ipray that Govinda-kuëòa, the lake created by that ceremony, mayeternally manifest before my eyes.

TEXT 75vrajendra-varyärpita-bhogam uccair

I take shelter of the place named Annaküöa, where Vrajaräja Nandaoffered a mountain of rice and huge quantities of other foodstuffs toGiriräja Govardhana. Here Aghäri Kåñëa assumed a gigantic form,proclaimed that He was actually Govardhana Hill, and invited every-one to ask boons from Him. Fooling all the Vrajaväsés, and even ÇrématéRädhikä [who don’t know that Govardhana is actually Çyämasundara]He gave benedictions to each person and then ate the huge offering.

[All the Vrajavasis happily prayed to Giriräja that Çyämasundara shouldhave a long life and should be blessed with a nice wife. Rädhikä wasalso there, praying to Giriräja to make Kåñëa Her upapati and to giveHer the chance to serve Him. Våhat Käya Kåñëa answered Her prayerbut only after some time, wanting to keep Her there in front of Him todrink Her beauty deeply.]

hariù svayaà yatra vihära-kärésadä mudä räjati räja-bhogair

hari-sthalaà tat tu bhaje ’nurägaiù

With great love and devotion I worship the place located at the sum-mit of Govardhana Hill, named Hari-sthala, where the charming andhandsome Hari always enjoys ever new and fresh blissful pastimes.Here He is decorated with royal ornaments befitting a prince.

[From this peak Hari is able to see Çrématé Rädhikä and the gopés standingin another part of Govardhana, and He experiences great jublilationwhen They look at each other from the distance. Here He is deco-rated with Rädhikä’s bhävas which inspire His heart from afar. I dopraëäma to Hari-sthala, who should inspire anuräga in my heart sothat I can taste svaräsiké upasana.]

One morning Nägarendra (the youthful king of amorous heroes), sur-rounded by His friends, became eager at heart to enjoy the däna-kelipastime. Blocking the path, He forbade Çré Gändharvä and Her girl-friends to pass, proclaimed Himself a toll collector appointed byMadana, and demanded that they pay tax on the milk products theywere carrying. Time and again I offer praëäma and sing the gloriesof Çré Kåñëa-vedé, where this lélä took place. [When will the day bemine when I can go there with Çrématé Rädhikä and Her sakhés?]

Bathing here and drinking it waters, I worship Käliya-hrada, the lakewhere Hari punished Käliya-näga for having offended His friends,who are more precious to Him than His own life. He danced on hishoods and rhythmically kicked him with the soles of His feet.

I eternally take shelter of the sacred place which bears the nameDvädaça-sürya-tértha (the place of the twelve suns). After chastizingKäliya in the Yamunä the munificent Mura-ripu Çré Kåñëa wasshivering with cold. Here He was warmed with great devotionby the strong rays of twelve suns (Ädityas) while the gopas,gopés and lowing surabhi cows looked on.

When Çré Govinda was being served by the intense heat of the Ädityasshining from every direction, perspiration trickled from His body,creating a sacred pond. The waters of this charming pond are mostaromatic and splendid, bearing the sweet fragrance of Govinda’stender, beautiful and lustrous limbs. I worship and praise the mostbrilliant Praskandhana-kuëòa.

kanyänäà prakarasya céra-nikaraà saàrakñitaà térataùhåtväruhya kadambam ujjvala-paréhäsena taà lajjayan

I take shelter of Céra Ghäöa, where the cowherd maidens performedan exceptional vow to please Kätyäyané-devé to get Kåñëa as theirhusband. They left their clothes on the bank of the Yamunä and dippedinto her clear cold waters. Smiling, Çré Kåñëa stole their garmentswithout being noticed and climbed a nearby kadamba tree with theirclothes. After teasing and embarassing the gopés sufficiently, Heeventually returned their garments.

With his mad whinnying the great horse-demon Keçi made the threeworlds tremble, and with the wild rolling of his burning eyes he setthe entire universe in flames. Çré Kåñëa killed this demon as easily asone splits a blade of grass and then washed His blood-stained handsin the Yamunä at a place now known as Keçi-tértha (Keçi-Ghaöa). Iworship that sacred place.

I praise the place where Kåñëa and Balaräma were playing freelywith Their beloved sakhäs when they were attacked by hunger. Herethe supremely beautiful wives of the learned yäjïika-brähmaëashappily and devotedly fed all the cowherd boys many varieties ofthe four kinds of foodstuff, each dish rebuking the taste of nectar. [Ialways glorify this sacred place and roll at the feet of these brämaëés,for it is certain that with their blessings one will attain steady devo-tion.]

Desiring to attain the precious gift of being embraced by the arms ofVrajendra-nandana Çyämasundara, the splendid gopés, filled withpraëaya, devotedly and happily worshiped Gopéçvara Mahädeva onthe bank of the Yamunä. I daily worship that Gopésvara Mahädeva,who quickly granted the gopés their desire.

Fearing Kaàsa [who was killing the new-born boys and kidnappingthe baby girls], Våñabhänu Mahäräja safely hid Çrématé Rädhikä in thesecluded place known as Santanupada. Having seen the handsomeÇyäma, whose complexion is as dark as a host of monsoon clouds,She earnestly worshiped Sürya-deva to attain His association. MaySürya-deva protect us [and remove all obstacles to our bhakti].

During Çré Kåñëa’s great birth festival, Vrajaräja Nanda respectfullyand happily donated to the local brähmaëas a mountain of glitteringjeweled ornaments, an even greater mountain of sesame, and 200,000young cows, all beautifully decorated with gold and strings of pearls.I glorify Mahävana, the place where the king of Vraja distributed thischarity.

In Våñaravi-pura, densely populated with many gopas, gopés andsurabhi cows, the precious jewel of Çrématé Rädhikä emerged fromthe mine of Kértidä-devi’s womb, which is glorified by jubilant demi-gods and sages as well as ordinary human beings. I pray that when Ienter King Våñabhänu’s capital city of Rävala, I may drown in a greatflood of love.

I pray that Çeñaçayé Çré Kåñëa will kindly bestowupon us eternal residence in His enchanting Vraja.

[Kåñëa briefly displayed His Anantaçäyé Viñëu form to satisfy Rädhikä’scuriosity and laid down on a thousand-petalled lotus in the middle ofKñéra-sägara while She massaged His lotus feet.]

I worship Bhäëòéravana, where my rasa-mayé mistress, Kåñëa’sbeloved Rädhä, dressed Herself and Her closest friends as wrestlers.When She proudly and eagerly wrestled here with Kåñëa, the killerof Bakäsura, She greatly pleased Madana, the god of love.

As the Yamunä was slowly flowing towards the salt ocean due toseparation from Kåñëa, Balarämajé ordered her to come close. Whenshe would not comply, He became irate and dragged her with the tipof His plow. Even today the river’s crooked course can still be seen.With deep devotion I praise this wonderful place known as RämaGhäöa.

Distressed at seeing His bosom friends enter the greatly sinfulAghäsura’s belly, which burned with virulent poison dangerous as agreat forest fire, Muräri also entered the serpent’s mouth. Within amoment He killed that vile demon and rescued His friends. May Sarpa-sthalé, the place where the Lord enjoyed these pastimes, also protectus.

Hari then assumed the forms of all theboys and calves and greatly pleased their mothers by gladly eatingall the delectable foodstuffs they offered Him.

I eternally offer respects to the sacred place known as Çeña-bhéru-caturmukha, as well as to Çeña Çré Kåñëa Himself. Here the four-facedBrahmä fell on the ground and offered prayers to the Lord, afraid thathe had committed a grave offense by stealing the cowherd boysand calves. Amidst profuse tears, he offered many wonderful andunprecedented prayers glorifying the gently smiling Mukunda, thewonderful cowherd son of the king of Vraja.

I glorify again and again Kåñëa’s dearly prized twelve forests, wherearmies of intoxicated bees buzz about masses of fragrant flowers.These forests are splendid with many desire trees and wish-fullingcreepers, and are further beautified by many expansive lakes, riversand large hills.

With utmost reverence I worship Çré Uddhava Mahäçaya, who is filledwith the flavors of love for Çré Muräri both as servant and friend. Kåñëa’slotus feet are millions of times more dear to him than his own life, buthe left them behind and stayed in Vraja for ten months. There heconsoled and revived the Vrajaväsés by constantly narrating Kåñëa’spastimes and assuring them, “Look! Kåñëa is just now coming fromMathurä!”

How fortu-nate they are to be so dear to Kåñëa and to always lovingly serve Him.Just to have the chance to bathe in the footdust of these piousVrajaväsés, even the great Brahmä, busy with the creation entrustedto him by Bhagavän, sincerely yearns to take birth in Vraja as a bladeof grass, shrub, creeper or any other similar species. I praise the glories of the blissful grass, bushes, creepers, insects,snakes, animals, birds and other creatures of Vraja, who, helpingto enrich His pastimes, are all very dear to Mukunda. They are alltranscendental and increase His pleasure. Their good fortune iscoveted by Brahmä, Uddhava and others, as is repeatedly and clearlyestablished in Çrémad-Bhagavatäm.

Aho! When will I wander around the slopes of Govardhana, madlycalling out over and over again, “Hey Rädhe! Hey Kåñëa!”, and when,stumbling and sometimes falling unconscious on the ground, will Isprinkle Their playland with the constant flow of my tears?

TEXT 104na brahmä na ca närado na hi haro na prema-bhaktottamäùsamyag jïätum ihäïjasärhati tathä yasyocchalan-mädhurémkintv eko baladeva eva paritaù särddhaà sva-mäträ sphuöaàpremnäpy uddhava eña vetti nitaräà kià sa vrajo varëyate

How can I possibly describe this land of Vraja, whose billowing sweet-ness cannot be fully comprehended even by Brahmä, Närada, Çiva,or many other of the most exalted premé devotees. Only Baladevaand His mother Rohiëé-devé truly know the glories of Vraja, and ÇréUddhava, intoxicated with prema, knows something of it.

TEXT 105anyatra kñaëa-mätram acyuta-pure-premämåtämbho-nidhisnäto ’py acyuta-saj-janair api-samaà nähaà vasämi kvacit

kintv atra vraja-väsinäm api samaà yenäpi kenäpy alaàsaàläpair mama nirbharaù pratimuhur väso ’stu nityaà mam

Even if I have the opportunity to bathe in the nectarean ocean ofprema, and even if I have the pure devotees as my associates, I willnot consent to live, even for a single moment, in any sacred placeother than Vrajabhümi. Even if the residents of Vraja appear to beordinary, and even if they fill my ears with useless gossip, I pray thatI may remain among them, eternally residing here in Vraja.

guëärädhita-rädhäyäù päda-yugmaà ratir mama

May all my inclinations to love be fully fixed at the lotus feet of ÇréRädhä, who is so qualified that all divine attributes worship Her. Shehas become the exclusive object of Muradviña’s blind infatuationthrough the diplomatic genius of Rüpa Maïjaré, who lovinglyand cleverly brings Yugala-Kiçora together for Their passionateenjoyment.

Those who always reverently and eagerly recite this beautiful Vraja-viläsa-stava, which is filled with the sweetness and loving sentimentsof the eternal residents of Vraja, will certainly attain direct darçana ofYugala-Kiçora along with all Their associates.
