eep in the heart of an ancient jungle, hundreds oflight-years from Earth, an engine roared to life. Moments

later, a sleek silver ship lifted from the ground. It shot up

over the towering trees and sliced through the clouds,

a spear of light. The jungle growled and chittered and

screeched at the unnatural sight. Raptogons threw back

their heads, bared their teeth, and shrieked at the sky.

The ship rocketed up and up, a rising star that blazed

sharp and bright . . . and then was gone.

In its wake, a blanket of silence dropped over the

jungle. Only the quiet chirping of birds and buzzing of

insects disturbed the stillness.

Until . . . footsteps.

A boy stepped out of his hiding place in the trees.

A boy who did not belong on this planet, any more

than the crew of the silver ship had.

A boy with a ship of his own.

He was dressed all in black, with an omega symbol

emblazoned on his right shoulder. He tilted his head to

ash Conroy studied the touch screen besidethe portal, tracing his finger along the route hed mapped

out. Each symbol marked a different junction in the vast,

tangled nest of tubes that wove through the ship. A single

wrong move, and everything would be lost. He was the

Alpha team leader, responsible for everything that hap-

pened on board the Cloud Leopardand this missionhe

couldnt afford to make mistakes.

He checked the route.

He double-checked it.

Perfect.

Dash tapped the screen, finalizing the input. Then

he wrapped his hands around the horizontal metal bar

installed above the portal.

This was it.

Moment of truth.

He took a deep breath and swung himself off his feet

and into the tube. A gush of air swept him into motion,

speeding him toward the heart of the Cloud Leopard.

The navigation deck exploded with confusion.What is that?

Whois that?

How can there be anyone else out here?

Are they following us?

Who arethey?

Voices overlapped, all of them tinged with panic.

They were hundreds of light-years away from home,

hurtling through the vast emptiness of space. It was im-

possible that they would just happen to cross paths with

another ship.

And yet . . .

There it was, a dark, hulking ship, about the same

size as the Cloud Leopard. Where the Cloud Leopard

was all graceful sloping curves, this ship was straight

lines and sharp angles, like an arrow slicing through the

fabric of space. But there was still something familiar

about it. Something niggling at the back of Dashs mind.
