• Frederick Buechner “Compassion is not religious business, it is human business, it is not luxury, it is essential for our own peace and mental stability, it is essential for human survival.”

April may well be the cruelest month, according to Chaucer and T.S. Eliot, and as the semester is drawing to its swift end, it is one of the busiest of the year. Don’t give up! Get help! Use the SSC, talk to your instructors, don’t miss class trying to catch-up. Work with your classmates.

During Learn Different Day, parents and caregivers will gain a new and hopeful perspective on their child’s learning difference. Students will explore how to become empowered. They’ll learn about opportunities for support, be encouraged to understand how they learn, and become able to self-advocate so they can thrive in school and in life.

The day is part of a series to be featured around the U.S. in 2018, to help bring together the community of parents, guardians and students with learning and attention issues like dyslexia and ADHD.

Attendees will be split into parent and student groups to participate in these activities:

• Art Projects: Students will attend an “art room” to experience Eye to Eye’s social-emotional curriculum and foster a partnership with a college/high school student who has a similar learning and attention issue.

• Meet the Eye to Eye Diplomats: Parents will join a session featuring college-age students who will share inspiring personal stories and practical strategies for success.

• Expert Panel featuring: • Marcus Soutra, Eye to Eye President • Luke Hayes, Director of Mobilization at Understood.org • Matt Brown, Eye to Eye Diplomat

Eye to Eye’s mission is to unlock greatness in the 1 in 5 who learn differently so students can achieve their fullest potential. To learn more, about Eye to Eye, visit eyetoeyenational.org. Learn Different Day takes place on Saturday, April 14 from 11:00 AM until 1:30 PM in the College’s dining hall and in room 103.

At the start of the 2017-2018 academic year, Villa Maria College launched its own chapter of Eye to Eye through the efforts of students Victoria Smith and Katie Jones.

MAKING CONTACT

By Virginia Satir

I believe The greatest gift I can conceive of having From anyone is to be seen by them, heard by them, to be understood and touched by them. The greatest gift I can give is to see, hear, understand and to touch another person. When this is done I feel contact has been made. Poem from Teaching With Fire, Jossey-Bass Books, 2003.
