In India, acid hasoften been used as aweapon againstwomen who haveturned down advancesby men. It has beenestimated that arounda thousand of womensuffer acid attack peryear in India. Acidattacks are seen asone of the most viciouscrimes as it causesperpetual suffering tothe victim. The dailyreporting of incidentsof Acid attacks onwomen clearly showsthat the maleperpetrators disfigurewomen as a form ofrevenge. They get holdof the corrosivechemical withoutdifficulty, and havelittle fear of the law.

Why Acid Attacks on Women? The victims die ahundred deaths. Suchacid attacks havebrought the focusback on the need foreffective monitoringand regulation. Withacids being availablein the market, forpurposes ranging frompainting, use in carbatteries, in de-weeding and as floor-cleaning substances, they easily fall in thehands of those whowant to wreakvengeance.

The maleperpetrators disfigurewomen as a form ofrevenge. Herethe criminal issuccessful in hidinghis identity by

covering his faceduring the crime. This is the reasonwhy there has beentremendous increasein this heinous crimein recenttimes. Perhaps themost dangerous thingabout acid attacks isthe fear that theycreate. With just a

few rupees, anyonecan buy a weapon thatcan ruin anotherperson’s life in just afew seconds. Part ofthe reason is that acidis cheap and widelyavailable. ManyIndians useconcentrated acid tosterilize their kitchensand bathrooms, as

Americans would usebleach. A concretesign of progress inlaw-making has beenthe recent ordinanceon violence againstwomen, which, amongother provisions, included two newsections in the IndianPenal Code (Sections326A, whichprescribes a minimumof 10 years and amaximum of lifeimprisonment fordeadly acid attacksthat leave the victimsgrievously injured andcausing severepermanent or partialdamage and disability, and Section 326B thatmakes plans andattempts to fling acid

on another punishablewith a jail term ofbetween five andseven years with fine).Besides, Section 326Aalso envisages a finethat can go up to Rs.10 lakh and theamount should go tothe victim. In manycases, the victimswere poor and did nothave the means totake up their cases incourt. Just theregulation of acidsales is, however, notenough. While thereare scores of factoriesmanufacturing acidwithout a licence, illegal sales of thedeadly liquid are quitecommonplace too.

ly due to which thesame government andthe same leaders getelected all the time.Voting is the democrat-ic right of every adultIndian. However, it isequally important tounderstand its serious-ness. While castingvote, it is important toelect those candidatesor the party who, thevoters think, will workfor the betterment ofthe common people. The state governmentis spending lots of mon-ey for the benefits ofthe migrants and dueto this, the son of thesoils are not gettingthose benefits. The sonof the soils should begiven first preferencein the state. The statewill progress only if thestate governmentspends money on thedevelopment of theyouth and the people.”

He further added,“It is important that we

bring about a change ofgovernance. WheneverI agitate on any issue,I am declared as a vil-lain. The Maharashtragovernment in theirprevious term had de-clared that the statewill be a toll free but itis still not. They havefailed to live upto theirpromises. The citizenshave the power to ques-tion the government forthe non fulfilment ofpromises. One way ofdoing so is by not elect-ing them again. Themantra is simple:those who work for thebetterment of the peo-ple and the state, wouldbe elected.”

“The present gov-ernment, if chosenagain, will continue todo what they havebeen doing from lastfive years. They knowthat they will not bequestioned. Thepresent government isconfident that they willwin, but the decisionlays in the hands of thevoters only. If theywant, they can bringabout a change. A com-petent opposition is theneed of the time.”

Safe commutingIn the past few years the vehicular population in Navi Mum-

bai has grown manifold. The modes of transport have multipliedand the vehicular density is increasing exponentially with everypassing year. However the quality and quantity of the road net-work and traffic control aids have not kept pace with the demand. The traffic discipline has deteriorated and there seems to be norespect for the traffic rules and the traffic authorities. Rather theyoung generation seems to enjoy flouting the traffic rules andseems to take pride in driving fast but rash imitating Bollywoodmovies. Many of them take pride in driving vehicles even beforethey attain the mandatory qualifying age of 18 years, to be eligi-ble to possess a driving license. They do not have even the slight-est inkling that by their behavior they are not only playing withtheir lives, but are also putting to risk the lives of other commut-ers. It is very unfortunate that the statistics for the road acci-dents are increasing at an alarming pace, matching the pace atwhich the people are driving these modern machines. The grav-ity of the situation has forced the government to direct its atten-tion towards road safety measures and to seek solutions to theproblem. Celebrating “Road Safety Week” every year is a feebleattempt in that direction.

While a number of factors are responsible for road accidents, prime reasons are blatant flouting of traffic rules and most im-portantly primitive and inadequate traffic control aids. Traffic sig-nals are effective means of regulating traffic. However if theseare installed before proper survey, they can become a nuisancefor the motorists and pedestrians alike. In Navi Mumbai the au-thorities seem to have installed traffic signals haphazardly with-out carrying out a proper survey of the traffic. Hence one canspot five signals in a distance of about two kilometers i.e. fromsector 10, Vashi to the highway. These signals, which are of 100to 120 seconds duration even during non-peak hours, have be-come the cause for traffic jams through out the day and are prov-ing to be great irritants. In busy areas like sector 28 junction,Vashi, Kopri junction, sector 26, 3 tank junction, Koperkhairaneetc. there are no traffic signals leading to anarchy and conse-quent traffic snarls. Even the traffic policeman does not man thesebusy junctions. The diversions are also made without proper plan-ning. At Shivaji chowk, so dangerous is the recently made diver-sion, that it can cause major accidents besides traffic jams.

Adequate street lighting, smooth riding surface, properly func-tioning of traffic control aids, traffic markings are some of the waysof reducing road accidents. Since a large number of accidents in-volve pedestrians, it is necessary to devote attention towards theirsafety. An adequately designed and encroachment free pedestrianpathways are essential for segregating the vehicular and pedestri-an traffic and they can provide the much desired sense of safetyand protection to the pedestrians. Special attention should be giv-en towards lighting pedestrian cross walks and junctions.

An effective way of controlling and curbing accidents is the strictimplementation and enforcement of traffic rules. The driving li-cense should be issued only after rigorous examination process. While helmets should be made compulsory to the riders of twowheelers and fastening of seat belts should be made mandatoryfor the drivers of four wheelers. By imposing other legislativemeasures like introducing fines for flouting rules, imprisonmentor endorsement on licenses for reckless driving, road accidentscan be minimized. The other field which needs immediate atten-tion is traffic planning. It is today a very specialized field and can-not be designed by thumb rules as is being done today by the au-thorities. It needs understanding of the subject besides studyingthe traffic behaviour and the psychology of the commuters in aparticular region / city. So there is immediate need to have thetraffic study carried out by professionals and long term planningdone with futuristic approach, for Navi Mumbai, to optimize theinfrastructure and to have easy and speedier and safe commuting.

As my thirteen yearold daughter, Mahikaand I were goingthrough some quota-tions, we came acrossone by APJ AbdulKalam – “Success iswhen your signaturebecomes an auto-graph”. She frowned, and said she did notagree with the state-ment. I asked her toexplain. “You don’thave to prove your suc-cess to people. Successis when you love, re-spect and know your-self, even if everyoneelse around you doesn’tknow about what youhave done.” Her state-ment got me thinking.

Most of us tend toequate success withfame – a successful per-son must be well-known, with picturessplashed all over me-dia, shelves of awardsand trophies on dis-play, and must be visi-ble giving interviews asyou switch channels onyour TV. Success is themiddle name of a celeb-rity whose autographyou seek and with

Success withoutan Autograph

whom you click a self-ie and post on socialmedia.

But can success bemeasured with yourown level of satisfac-tion, rather than byothers? Can we experi-ence success throughthe achievement of thegoals we have set forourselves? Can we feelcontented just know-ing that we have donethe best we could? Canwe search for successwithin instead of theexternal environment?

As humans, weconstantly seek theapproval of others toreinstate our confi-dence in ourselves. Weyearn for appreciationand recognition; forour success seems in-complete without theacknowledgment ofour achievements. To-day, in an age of socialmedia, this translatesinto the number oflikes, comments andshares of our posts, and the number of‘friends’ and ‘followers’we have. It is besidesthe point that some ofthese friends blindly‘like’ the posts withouteven reading them, and that we can paysocial media to boostthe number of ‘likes’ onour pages.

The Bhagwad Gitatells us that we need tokeep doing our duty, without concerningourselves with the re-sults – that we havethe right only to per-form our prescribedresponsibility, but thatwe are not entitled tothe fruits of our action.Yet, what we end updoing is weighing thefruits first, and assess-ing the way the bal-ance tilts. If theweight of the fruits isnegligible, the taskdoesn’t seem to beworth the effort we putin. However, if the re-wards are lucrativeand attractive, we putin the energy and timeto ensure we do it well.

Perhaps it is time tolook at the world fromthe perspective of achild – who can see thewisdom in our ancienttexts that we have for-gotten over a period oftime. Perhaps, it istime to reconsider ifsuccess is possible evenif our signature is notan autograph for oth-ers, but only for our-selves!

Stability is the keyword for the people ofMaharashtra in theensuing

A s s e m b l yElections. Over andabove people look forfree and fair

elections andincident free polling. Weneed to have agovernment withabsolute majority. After seeing coalitionpolitics people are fed upwith price of vegetables, fruits and othercommodities going upto pinch the pocket ofthe people very much. The best solution to theproblem is to have an absolute majority for asingle party so thatthere will more co-ordination and controlover the raising prices. More over the Centre-State relations shouldbe cordial to make boththe ends come up withan amicable solution tomore pressing problemsfacing the State. It istime to have a broaderoutlook for pressingproblems and do aworld of good to thewelfare of the people.

Petty party politicsplay pivotal role indeciding the fate of theelection. The destiny ofthe State ofMaharashtra is in the

Absolute majority for a single

party is the best solutionhands of the people. They should go in largenumbers to vote on thepolling day. Sitting athome watching theproceedings and lateron playing the blamegame will not going tohelp in any way. Manydevelopmental projectswere shelved due to thevarious factorsconcerning the state.

As a citizen of theState I look for stabilityand a state of peacefulliving with lessproblems and morecomforts. We need notlook for Shanghai inMumbai or makingNagpur as the capitalcity but work in unison.United we standdivided we fall is true.

It is time to increaseemployment withinNavi Mumbai. Peopleneed not spend theirtime on travelling toMumbai, Pune or otherstates on the look outfor a job. We would liketo have a disease freeNavi Mumbai. We findmosquito menace isworrying the citizen ofsatellite city for sometime. Dengue, Malariacases are on theincrease. We look outpollution free and eco-friendly city.

Main worry for theroad users is theconditions of the roads

full of potholes andcaters and number ofaccidents are takingplace because there arelack of even roads atfocal points of the city.So the immediate needis to improve the basicstructure of NaviMumbai in a phasedmanner. If the city issafe and secured thenwe can develop theplace as a tourist spotwith various amenitiesfor the foreigners canpick a better option instaying in satellite cityand go around Mumbai,Pune and othersurrounding places likeNasik, Aurangabad,M a h a b a l e s h w a r,Khandala, Lonawalaand Ganpatipule andother summer resorts.

People living in flatslook for increase in FSIin private buildingsand look for removal ofhutment all over thecity for better living. Weneed to have onewindow system forredevelopment of oldbuildings. It is time tothink in terms ofmaking over NaviMumbai and the voiceof voters go a long wayin making the dreamscome true.

There is only onemethod by which toattain knowledge, thatwhich is calledconcentration. Thevery essence ofeducation isconcentration of mind.

The chemist whoworks in hislaboratoryconcentrates all thepowers of his mind, brings them into onefocus, and throwsthem on the elements; the elements standanalysed, and thus hisknowledge comes. Theastronomerconcentrates thepowers of his mindand brings them intoone focus; and hethrows them on toobjects through histelescope; and starsand systems rollforward and give uptheir secrets to him.So, it is in every case. That is in every casefrom common manto yogi, all have to usethe same method toattain knowledge saysSwami Vivekananda.

The more thepower ofconcentration, thegreater is theknowledge that isacquired. The cookwith concentration

Inspire : How toacquire knowledge

will cook a meal allthe better. In makingmoney, or inworshipping God, orin doing anything, thestronger the power ofconcentration, thebetter will that thingbe done. It is the onecall, the one knock, which opens the gatesof Nature, and lets outfloods of light.

Swamiji says, ninety percent of ourlife force is wastedbecause we do notwork withconcentration. That isalso the differencebetween man andanimal. The basicdifference betweenman and man also liesin its power ofconcentration. Thebasic difference inachievements in fieldsof arts, science, musicis also this only.

When the mind isconcentrated andturned back on itself, all within us will beour servants, not ourmasters. The Greeksapplied theirconcentration to theexternal world and there perfection in art, literature etc. TheHindus centred on theinternal world, uponthe realms in the selfand developed thescience of yoga. Howto check it and bringthe mind undercontrol is the wholesubject of studyin Rajayoga.

The practice ofmeditation leads tomental concentration.“To me the veryessence of education isconcentration of mind, not the collection offacts. If I had to do my

education once again,I would not studyfacts at all. I woulddevelop the power ofconcentration anddetachment, and thenwith perfectinstrument, collectfacts at will.”

Vivekananda saidthe power ofconcentration can bedeveloped by followingstrict Brahmacharya.Abstinance is the key.If we can followbrahmacharya for 12years, it is possible todevelop great power ofconcentration, for thatwould lead todevelopment of greatmemory power. Thechaste brain hastremendous energyand gigantic willpower. Withoutchastity there can beno spiritual strength.

Every boy shouldbe trained to practiseabsoluteBrahmacharya andthen, and then alonefaithand Shraddha willcome. Chastity inthought, word anddeed always and in allconditions is what iscalledBrahmacharya. Theidea of true Shraddhamust be brought backonce more to us. Thefaith in our own selvesmust be reawakenedand then only thenthe problems whichface our country willgradually be solved byourselves saysVivekananda.

The Centrealso said that acid soldthrough retailers willbe not strong enoughto corrode humanbody. Moreover, theperpetrators of acidattacks, among themost heinous ofcrimes, deserve theseverest punishment. It is necessary toimpart and inculcatemoral values andstreamline the policeand prosecuting

agencies. Leaderscutting across partyaffiliations shouldshow the requisitepolitical will, courageand conviction to dealruthlessly with crimesagainstwomen. Instead ofpreaching always nowit is time to awakeand do something forourselves and forsociety otherwise suchincident will becontinued and we allhere to repent afterthat. Only holisticeducation system andmoral upliftment canbring the change inthe society for thisburning gender-sensitive issues.

Moreover, theattacks leave thevictims in a state ofshock and in hospital

decades. Such attacksin particularconstitute is an act ofanimalism, brutalityand cruelty anddegradation of humansociety which deservesmaximumpunishment beyondforgiveness, but whenthe victim or thevictim’s family standbefore the law thepunishment meted out

to the accused is ofteninconsistent with thegravity of the offencecommitted. Thoughthe number of acidattacks have risen inrecent times, thewomen can’t sit athome due to fear ofsuch attacks. Sheneeds to be cautiousandaware. Compensationshould be given to thevictim as soon aspossible so that shecould proceed with hertreatment properly.

Media can alsoplay an active role incurbing acid attacksby highlighting everybit of the story wherea woman has been avictim of an acidattack. There is animmense need to comeout with legal

measures and medicalreforms by ourgovernment to helpthese victims. Menwho commit thesecrimes are usuallyspurned suitors whowant to avenge theirrejection. The menshould be punished sobadly that no one willever think ofattempting to ruin agirl’s life.
