Properties

Mechanical and Electrical PropertiesThe UP-SYSTEM types of unsaturated resins range from brittle to tough and from rigid to flexible.

Using reinforcement fibres the strength can equal that of structural steel and provide a favourable

strength/weight ratio. At low temperatures the resins embrittle less than thermoplastics. They have

good heat resistance. E-glass reinforced laminates possess good electrical insulation properties and

dialectic behaviour as well as excellent creep or tracking resistance.

Chemical ResistanceThe UP-SYSTEM polyester resins generally have good chemical resistance to a range of chemicals

at normal concentrations. In our range you will find the suitable resin for your application.

Processing

• Unfilled resins:

As a cold curing casting resin for electronic encapsulation, casting in general and for decorative

embedding

• Filled with powder or chopped strands or glass fibre:

As fillers and bonding materials

• With fibre reinforcement: Processed by means of hand lay-up or spray-up application. They can

also be used with foil/vacuum machines, vacuum injection as well as cold and hot press moulding.

• Hollow parts: can be produced using filament winding

• Rotational means: using the centrifugal process

• Pultrusion: producing rods, pipes and other profiles

Various types of UP resins are available: General purpose laminating resins, gelcoats, sealing top-

coats, air drying coatings, bonding and embedding resins. The label UP-SYSTEM stands for a wide

range of high quality polyester resins.

Applications:

Non-Reinforced Casting Resins

• The casting of electrical and electronic components

• Decorative encapsulation and clear castings

• Producing moulds and patterns

Reinforced Casting Resins

• For vehicle production:

Car bodies, parts of car bodies such as bumpers (fenders), bonnets, spoilers and boot lids, boat

hulls, in panelling for aircraft interiors, bodies of trains, containers for sea transport etc.

• Construction work:

Translucent roofing sheets, coating roofs, external cladding panels, shop fronts and shelters,

prestige foyers in offices, airports and other areas etc.

• Hobbies and sport:

Figures for leisure and theme parks and for play equipment in childrens play grounds, waterslides

and whirlpools for swimming pools etc.

• Installations:

Oil tanks, food tanks, transport containers etc.. Using filament winding large diameter pipes are

constructed.

• Machine and tool construction:

Castings for machines, making patterns for moulds and reproducing tools etc.

• Furniture manufacture:

For manufacturing tables and chairs, for garden furniture etc.

• Theatre and film studios:

FILLERS

Polyester Fillers

Polyester fillers have been produced by VOSSCHEMIE GmbH for more than 50 years. During this

time VOSSCHEMIE GmbH has become one of the leading producers of car repair fillers in Europe

as well as overseas. This has been achieved by developing new types of fillers as well as constantly

improving existing formulations. Our fillers are used mainly for car repair.

Under the label UP-SYSTEM (UPS) we arranged the fillers, which are especially used for producing

patterns and moulds, for surface finish of GRP mould parts before painting or for repairing GRP parts.

In addition, we offer for large-scale consumers dispensing systems for fillers and BPO hardeners

in industry cartridges as well as suitable fillers which are immersed in water, for GRP repair and for

producing moulds and models.

Properties

Because of ever increasing labour costs all our fillers have been formulated to apply and sand easily

so as to provide a surface ready to paint. These properties are much appreciated by the people who

work with these materials every day.

Almost all (98 %) of the polyester fillers we produce are hardened with Benzoyl Peroxide (mainly red)

paste. Because of its red colour it is easy to mix evenly as a car body filler must have a short curing

time i.e. be sandable after 15-20 minutes.

We are confident that you will be able to select the right filler for your requirements from our product

range.

Technical DataPolyester fillers normally contain 30-40 % polyester resin which is amine accelerated. It is cured by adding

1-5 % BPO hardener (usually 2-3 %). Fillers also contain mineral filling materials and pigments. Amongst

these are talc and titanium dioxide.

POLYURETHANE:

POLYURETHANE

Properties · Processing · Application

Polyurethanes have good weather resistance but most turn slightly yellow. Their resistance to many

normal chemicals is known, but it is safest to make a practical test first.

Among others, polyurethane is not resistant to the following chemicals: acetone, many organic acids

(acetic acid), ammonia, methanol, methylene chloride, high concentrate mineral acids (nitrate, sul-

phur, salt, phosphoric acid).

Polyurethane Coatings

One component coatings are tough, have good adhesive strength and high abrasion resistance. The

material usually contains a solvent, is applied with a roller or sprayed (using a fresh air protective

mask). After the solvent has evaporated a reaction occurs with the moisture (in the air or substrate)

which leads to a duroplastic cross linkage.

The one component polyurethane is used as a concrete coating or as a bonding agent for GRP on

wood, mineral materials and steel – not stainless steel. It is also used as a paint coat on these ma-

terials. Pigmented polyurethanes have good abrasion and chemical resistance and are used as floor

coatings in warehouses and production halls, workshops, garages and as protection for concrete on

feeding containers and portable silos in the agricultural market.

The mechanical properties of the two component coatings can be altered by adding filling materials

to the A component. The viscosity increases gradually. The material is used as a casting or coating

compound and is applied by hand or machine.

They are used for mouldings or cores in the concrete and electronic industry and as mould compo-

nents in the technical field.

They can be applied as a thick coat to protect metals from abrasion or corrosion and polystyrene

foams from mechanical and chemical attack.

Self levelling coating systems are used for industrial floors exposed to high stress.

Polyurethane Foams

Polyurethane foams (PUR foams) can be hard, medium hard or flexible, with or without a skin. They

are available as one or two component foams, each type with a very different density, start time and

mechanical properties.

Duroplast polyurethanes (PUR) are one and two component coating, casting and foam materials.

The two component casting materials possess varying mechanical properties such as elasticity,

surface hardness and high tear strength.

One component foams have a density of 22 to 30 kg/m³ and can withstand a shear force of up to

1 kg/cm². They are available in aerosol cans containing a CFC free blowing agent. One component

foams harden by absorbing air moisture (as do the 1 component coatings). 1 component foams are

certified B2 as a building material according to DIN 4102 and are predominantly used for fixing and

sealing doors, window frames and around pipework.

Two component foams are CFC free and have a density of 10 kg/m³ (foam packaging) up to 700

kg/m³. Their properties are therefore very different.

They are mixed by hand or mechanically stirred and are poured into a mould or cavity. PUR foams

can also be sprayed onto the surface that is to be coated or insulated. Foams with a density up to

20 kg/m³ are used for foam packaging and insulation.

Hard foams with 40 to 60 kg/m³ are used for insulation both thermal and noise and filling buoyancy

chambers in boats and floating jetties. Sandwich cores are used for GRP or aluminium panels.

A spray foam that has at least 39 kg/m³, certified B2, can be used in the building industry.

Hard foams from 60 kg/m³ upwards can be walked on and are used on roofs (only those applied in

the building industry) and as a filling agent for buoyancy chambers.

Self supporting small castings and patterns can be made out of hard foam that has a density of 75

kg/m³ (structural foam). A foam with a density of 200 kg/m³ upwards can be nailed or screwed and is

used in the orthopaedic sector.

The compressive strength of soft foams can be altered by adjusting their density. They are used as

structural foam parts in the upholstery and vehicle industry (seat padding).

Mechanical and Electrical Properties

EP resins provide a high adhesive strength to the reinforcement fibres and a minimal shrinkage.

Reinforced moulding materials have good residual strength even when subject to oscillatory stress.

The mechanical properties strongly depend upon the fibre content, the fibre direction and the type of

fibre. Depending on their structure the materials range from stiff to elastic, very tough, hard, abrasion

resistant, dimensionally and heat stable. Very good insulating properties.

Epoxy resins are available as casting, coating and laminating resins, moulding material or as pre-

pregs (woven fibres pre-impregnated with resin). The resins are used for the following purposes:

Moulded components with E-glass, R-glass, aramide, carbon, and boron fibres; coatings with and

without glass fibre reinforcements for protection against corrosion; moulding material with glass fibre

reinforcements and metal inlays; polymer concrete for components that have a chemical resistance;

polymer cement based floors as a wear resistant surface coat; casting, saturating and embedding

resins for the electronic field; lacquer resins (thermoplasts and duroplasts); bonding resins.

Chemical Resistance

Epoxies generally have a better resistance to alkaline solutions than polyester resins. They are also,

depending on type, resistant to a range of acids and chemicals such as styrene, xylene, gasoline,

white spirit, petroleum, diesel and fuel oil.

Processing

EP resins can be processed by cold curing or hot curing. When cured with heat they clearly develop

better mechanical properties. Cold curing occurs with the casting of construction parts, the hand

lay-up and vacuum processes. Pre-impregnated woven fibres (40 to 60% glass content) are pro-

cessed to high strength moulded components on a press machine under vacuum or in autoclaves.

Hollow parts are produced in the filament winding process with pre-impregnated rovings of glass,

aramide or carbon fibres. Glass fibre EP parts can be shaped, bonded and will take screws. In a

cured state the material is physically harmless in practical terms.

Application

• Casting of electrical and electronic components:

Parts for electric motors; insulators; high voltage bearings. Base panels for electronic switches.

• Vehicle construction:

Gliders and power gliders; building components and panelling for large aeroplanes (sandwich

construction). Structural parts for UL (ultra light) aeroplanes; covers subject to heat exposure;

bonnets and spoilers on sports cars; panels for racing cars; racing yachts and boats, surfboards,

high performance masts, surf masts, wishbooms, bonding wood on modern boats, racing bikes,

tennis racquets.

• Tool construction:

Casting models, master forms, moulds, deep drawn tools, foam moulds, tools for injection moul-

ding.

• Building industry:

Reconstruction and bonding of concrete parts, surface protection, cement based composition

floors.

Epolit UNEpoxy laminating, casting and binding resin

Description

Epolit UN is a universal, low viscosity, solvent free bisphenol A/F resin with

reactive diluent and high crystallization stability. It can be used as a lamina-

ting, casting, saturating and bonding resin.

Area of application

The laminating system with the hardener Epocur UN SC for all-purpose

applications is used for manufacturing composites for boats, pipes and

containers and for repairing GRP parts. The laminate strengths achieve

their final properties by storing at room temperature after 4-6 days. A higher

mechanical resistance can be achieved after post curing the laminates.

The laminating system with the hardener Epocur UN MI has an extended

potlife (gel time > 8 h) and due to its low viscosity it is recommended for

injection methods e.g. for large laminates and in parts for the construction

industry. The post curing of the laminates is recommended.

The system with the hardener Epocur UN LA has a very long potlife and is

used especially in areas with warmer climate and for sewage renovation.

Larger batch sizes can be processed.

Epolit OVEpoxy laminating, casting and binding resin

Description

Epolit OV is a solvent free bisphenol A resin with reactive diluent and redu-

ced crystallization tendency. The hardeners Epocur OV SC and Epocur OV

LA are liquid at room temperature, uncoloured to light yellow polyamines.

The hardener Epocur OV LA is suitable for formulation of laminating systems

with a low exothermic reaction and a long potlife.

The fast curing hardener Epocur OV SC can be mixed with the slow curing

hardener Epocur OV LA in any desired ratio. This allows adjusting the potlife,

the curing process and the viscosity of the material, without changing the

mixing ratio of resin and hardener. This system is approved according to

Germanischer Lloyd.

Area of application

Epolit OV with the hardeners Epocur OV SC and Epocur OV LA are lamina-

ting systems which are preferably used for manufacturing rotor blades for

wind power stations, producing high strength reinforced mould components

and composites in the boat building, pipe and container building industry.

SILICONE:

SILICONE

Properties

The one component silicone cures with air moisture to a permanent elastic sealant. Two component

silicone rubbers are used as moulding and coating compounds. The material has a low shrinkage,

medium mechanical strength, high heat resistance (over 300°C for a short period without great

change in the mechanical properties), long processing and curing times, is physically harmless in

practical terms (excluding some hardeners) and has good electrical insulation ability. Very accurate

and flexible moulds are produced with 2 comp. silicone. The material has a high elasticity and one

piece moulds can often be made where two piece moulds would usually be necessary. Objects with

undercuts can also be reproduced. Silicone is self releasing from many materials.

Solutions prevent water penetration, but still allow vapour transmission.

Silicone rubber has high elasticity which makes it a useful material for many applications. One com-

ponent silicones adhere well to many substrates, two component silicones have good self releasing

properties from many materials.

Processing

Silicone rubbers are processed by casting, brushing or spraying. The solutions are applied by spray,

roller or brush.

Application

Mould material: elastic moulds with a high tear resistance for reproducing components. For machine

construction, automobile engineering, manufacture of decorative parts, prototypes and sculptures.

Precision mechanics: a sealant with high heat and water resistance.

Electronic field: casting compound for electronic encapsulation, laminated sheets for electronic

parts.

Car body production, sanitary areas, joints in construction: permanently elastic sealant that has a

high heat resistance and inhibits fungal growth.

Silicones are resistant to: diluted mineral acids and bases, glycol, sea water, methanol. They are not

resistant to: concentrated acids and bases, aromatic hydrocarbons and most solvents.

gation at break) and is self releasing from many materials. It cures at room

temperature after adding the RF curing agent. This low shrinkage silicone

rubber (0.2-0.5 % linear shrinkage) is used for moulding deeply undercut

parts. RF moulds can be subjected to high stress, they have excellent tear

resistance and stability. As the material has a high elasticity, one part moulds

are often made instead of two part moulds. If the mould is repeatedly used

a release agent is recommended. RF can be thickened with Silastic Thixo

Additive so that it does not drain on vertical surfaces or ceilings.
