Faculty and students from forty universities worldwide are coming to Rotman for RITC, the premier trading competition of its kind. Competing teams will undertake simulated market trading challenges.

RITC is an annual event hosted by the Rotman Financial Research and Trading Lab. This high-tech teaching and research space will soon undergo a major refurbishment, thanks to a $1.75-million gift from BMO Financial Group.

Watch the excitment of the 2011 competition on Rotman’s YouTube channel,youtube.com/user/RotmanSchool.

Gaining a realistic taste of challenges and pressures faced by investment banking professionals, Rotman students will be presenting their best suggestions for a case presented to them involving a real company. They will generate multiple strategic alternatives, create financial statements and forecasts, and produce a pitch book to secure a deal. Teams will be judged by Bay Street investment banking professionals.

The Rotman logo, used alone or in conjunction with the Rotman wordmark, recently underwent some subtle cosmetic changes, as outlined above. Be sure to use the latest logo and please be on the lookout for old versions in circulation. For a copy of the new logo, and directions on its proper use and placement, contact Courtney Brownell at [email protected] or 978-0856.

The Rotman School sees great value in the designer’s approach to solving problems. Rotman Design Challenge puts this perspective to work. In the only competition of its kind in North America, approximately 125 students from across Canada and the US come together at Rotman to test their thinking using business + design methodologies. The competition is judged by representatives that include members of design consulting firms.

Rotman’s competitive spirit will be on full display over the coming weeks with several terrific events taking place in the Fleck Atrium.

Hosted by the Rotman Photography Association, this popular event is an opportunity for you to show off your creative photographic talents. In keeping with this year’s theme — Exploring the World — Rotman students, alumni, and faculty are invited to submit photos they have taken that highlight their travel experiences and the beauty of our planet. Members of the arts and photography communities have been enlisted to judge entries. For submissions details, go to rotman.utoronto.ca/rotmanphoto or contact [email protected].

Kicking off the new year, faculty and staff donned their black-and-white finery on January 12 and headed to the Fleck Atrium to mingle with one another and enjoy hors d’oeuvres and drinks. A clothing drive was added to this year’s event in support of Dress Your Best. This charity supports people entering the workforce by providing them with professional outfits and accessories. Thank you to everyone who made a contribution.

A remarkable total of 135 faculty and teaching staff received the Excellence in Teaching Award for the 2010/11 academic year. The award is based on student evaluations. To qualify, a lecturer must receive a score of six or better on a scale of one for “poor” to seven for “excellent.”

Recipients, whose names were announced at the annual New Year’s party, included 115 superstars who have received the award multiple times. Dean Roger Martin has received the award five times for his work in the MBA and EMBA programs.
