Volunteering for Purdue’s “Plant Info To Go” Booth
at the 2017 Indiana State Fair
Parking• Free parking available in
the State Fair employee parking with free shuttle service to the fairgrounds.
• All other state fair parking including in the infield costs $5.00/vehicle. Enter through gates 1, 6, 10, and 16.
Our LocationThe Purdue “Plant Info To Go” Booth is located in the Purdue Extension Ag/Hort Building, at the southwest end of the racetrack.

The Booth
Name Badges and ApronsPlease wear your Purdue Master Gardener name badge (or Intern badge) while working in the booth.Purdue MG Program aprons are available in the booth if you would like to wear them during your shift. These aprons are PURDUE property. Please return them to the cabinet at the end of your shift. They are NOT for sale.
Computer
The computer is provided to serve a tool for you to provide information for visitors. The computer has a live internet connection.Please do not allow the public to use the computer.
The ComputerPurdue MG Program staff and/or a volunteer from Marion Co. MGs will open the booth each morning and start the computer.
Computer Problems???If the computer should stall or seem otherwise unresponsive…
Restart the computer; press and hold the power button until the computer shuts off (about 10 seconds).
Wait approximately 5 seconds, then press the power button again to restart.
If prompted, select “Start Windows Normally”.
At log-in screen, click on “User”.
Firefox should automatically open to our Consumer Hort Home Page for Indiana State Fair.
We have created a special home page that will automatically load when the computer is started.

Step 5: If they reside in Indiana, select their county (drop down menu with counties).

Step 6: Enter the fair patron’s email address into the appropriate field.

Step 7: Paste the website address into the appropriate field. More than one website address can be added to this field if needed.

Step 8: Click on the “Submit” button to send the email with the web link.
Reference BooksThe Purdue Master Gardener Manual and other reference books are available for your use at the booth only! Please do not let anyone borrow them.
Master Gardener Program InfoPlease distribute the Master Gardener brochure (HO-184) to those interested in the Program.
Write the phone number of their local county extension office on the brochure.
A list of counties with MG Programs and their office phone numbers will be available in the booth.
Give-AwaysWe have Purdue Consumer Horticulture/Purdue Master Gardenermagnets to give out to visitors.
And plastic bags for those that request.
Answering Questions
Use Purdue MG Manual, references, and internet to answer questions.
If you cannot answer a question, it is okay to say “I don’t know.”, then direct them to their Purdue Extension Office and give them the phone number (see phone list handout).
Tracking VisitorsIn an attempt to record impact, we would like to have an approximate count of visitors to the booth.
Please keep a tally each day. Tally sheets will be available in the booth for your use.
Leave the tally sheets at the booth when you leave.
Tracking VisitorsWhen finished with your shift, please place the tally sheet in this labelled notebook.
iPad with Purdue Plant Doctor & Midwest Trees of Indiana Apps
Our booth is furnished with an iPad to showcase the Plant Doctor apps from Purdue – Tree Doctor, Perennial Doctor, Annual Doctor, Tomato Doctor, Turf Doctor, and the Midwest Trees of Indiana App.The iPad is securely mounted in a locked case.Please encourage the public to play with the apps.Direct visitors to capture the displayed QR code for further information.

Additional Volunteer Instructions • Please do not distribute additional promotional
flyers, information, or items that have not been approved by the Purdue Master Gardener State Office.
• Additionally, we ask that Purdue Master Gardener volunteers working in the booth refrain from posting additional promotional banners or signage.
• The Purdue “Plant Info to Go” booth is not a commercial exhibit. Therefore, Purdue Master Gardeners should not engage in sales of any kind from the exhibit.
End of the Day
Just close the computer top and leave laptop and iPad on the counter, they are secured with locked cables.
End of the DayPlace reference materials, handouts, and magnets in cabinets. The back cabinets are not locked, just pull open from the bottom.
Turn the booth hours sign facing out. The building is open after you leave. Please leave the Booth Hours sign on the counter.
