What does the Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service do?Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service (VFRS) volunteers play a significant and vital role in helping to ensure their local communities are safe.
Volunteers carry out a range of activities including: Responding to local emergencies, such as:
structure fires; bush and scrub fires; vehicle and industrial rescue; and hazardous materials emergencies. Working with the community to identify and manage local fire risk. Undertaking local fire prevention activities with the community. Educating school children in fire safety. Working with residents to improve family and household fire safety.
What volunteer roles are available? Volunteers undertake various roles according to their abilities, interests, and what they are comfortable with.The different VFRS roles include: Firefighting (structural and bush fire) Community safety and education Administration Equipment maintenance Management of hazardous materials (HAZMAT) Road crash rescue Leadership Training Social and digital media Brigade marketing and public relations

What will I be doing?Time commitments vary between brigades but a typical range is: One training night per calendar month On average one weekend every two months Attend incidents when you are available.
Responsibilities include: Attending fires, road crash rescue and hazardous material incidents
whenever possible. Following instructions given by the Captain, brigade officers and
officer-in-charge. Using brigade’s equipment and vehicles in a safe manner. Attending brigade meetings regularly. Participating in training and drills. Maintaining a reasonable level of fitness appropriate to the tasks
allocated. Maintaining appliances, equipment and personal protective equipment
(PPE).
