1. Voluntary cleaning activity in the Community- December 16, 2016
The National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases organized a “voluntary cleaning activity” in the
community under Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Ward-66 on 16th December 2016. The local residents
from the community being informed about the activity by the Ward-Councilor and actively participated
in it; ward-Council members also joined hands. All the participants ensured to keep their locality clean
leading to good health for their children and family members.
2. Tree plantation activity in the Community- December 19, 2016

A tree plantation activity was undertaken by the National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases on
19th
December 2016, in collaboration with local residents in ward no. 66 of Kolkata Municipal
Corporation. The Director of the institution Dr. Shanta Dutta along with the Ward Councillor Mr. Fiaz
Ahmed and Scientists of the Institution, Dr. Ranjan K Nandy, Dr. Suman Kanungo and Dr. Falguni
Debnath had planted trees. Brief interaction took place between the Director of the NICED with local
community members about importance of tree plantation as well as maintenance of clean environment.
The program was marked by the enthusiastic participation of the Ward Councilor and local residents,
who along with NICED team members vouched to make the locality as a model ward in Kolkata.
3. Organizing public lecture/interactive panel discussion regarding Swachh Bharat campaign-
December 22, 2016
The Principal of the Indian Institute for Health Training, Kolkata, Mr. Ajit Kumar Sur, had informed the
students and faculty members about the upcoming public lecture on communicable diseases and
environmental pollution. The event was subsequently held at Tiljala V.I.P Sporting Club, 217 Tiljala
Road, Kolkata 700046 on 22nd
December 2016. Brochures and banners were used to disseminate
information on various topics. The trainees of the course titled “Sanitary Inspector- Health Management
(SI-HM)” at the National Institute for Health Training have joined the lecture as participants. The
session was conducted by the Hygiene Committee members of NICED. The following topics were
discussed
� Communicable Diseases –Special emphasis on Diarrhoea and vector borne diseases like Dengue
� Environmental Pollution – Awareness and prevention
� Nutrition for Children below 5 years and pregnant woman
� Personal Hygiene and Hand Washing procedures
� Environment Cleanliness

4. Organizing seminar on hygiene / cleanliness- December 23, 2016
On 23rd
December 2016, members of the health and hygiene team of NICED reached out to a school
named Milan Sangha Government Sponsored Free Primary School, located at Beliaghata, Kolkata-
700085. Dissemination of information covering the topics of diarrhea and nutrition and their relation
with health and hygiene was conducted among 19 students (15 girls, 4 boys) of grades 1-4. In addition,
the attending students were encouraged to act as peer educators. A participatory demonstration session
was subsequently conducted by the students on six steps of hand washing with actual usage of soap and
water.
5. Swachh Bharat Lecture and Felicitation- December 26, 2016

Mr. Kanu Dey, Technician-B, NICED was felicitated on 26th December 2016 for his initiative to
facilitate Swachh Bharat activities to keep the premises of NICED clean. Lecture sessions were also
organized followed by opportunities for questions and clarifications on this day for the staff of NICED.
Dr. Uchchal Bhadra, Principal, Infectious Disease & Beliaghata General Hospital, Kolkata was the
invited speaker at this event who deliberated upon evolution of concept hygiene and sanitation along the
development of human civilization.
