Back in the ‘40s and ‘50s, Mexico's Baja

peninsula was a rugged, remote area with

few roads, and even fewer tourists. Gil

Powell was one of these hearty souls who

fell in love with the area.

Around 1950, Gil found and purchased a

300-acre piece of paradise located on the

beach just south of Buena Vista. Gil was

continually going off to Africa to shoot

movies - hence the locals gave him the

nickname "El Leonero", which roughly translates to "The One Who

Knows Lions".

After Gil's death in 1974, Rancho Leonero languished for a number of

years until John Ireland stumbled upon it in 1979.

In 1984, John Ireland started construction of the original five rooms of

what was to become "The Inn at Rancho Leonero". The original ranch

house became the bar and office for the current resort. In 1986, the Inn

opened to its first guests.

From this inauspicious birth (in 1986 John had 1 cruiser with an Oar-

powered shore boat, the resort has grown to become arguably the best fa-

cility on the East Cape.

In 1989, John added a fleet of fast bullet cruisers. In 1990, the second

wing of 6 additional rooms were completed. In 1991, the pool and the

first of the super pangas were added. In 1992, the first 6 fabulous bunga-

lows were finished, and in 2000 a new 2-story complex was added.

lots of good food and fun for all. If you don’t plan on camping, come on out just for

tween 5:00pm – 8:00pm Saturday, June 1st. Bring a side dish and your favorite beverage.

San Diego Anglers 2019 Awards Banquet By: Ray Broadfoot

We had our annual Awards Banquet, Friday April 3rd, once again at Carlton Oaks Coun-

try Club in Santee. Every year it seems to get bigger and bigger - what an amazing night it

was! The San Diego Anglers Board, along with Debbie and Dwayne Patenaude, Tina Burlason,

and others, set the tables with the beautiful centerpieces. Charley Fouquette set out vast

amount of raffle and target raffle prizes. Louis Almeida and Jill Broadfoot set up the Anglers

Foundation silent auction.

With the raffle, silent auction and target raffles, prizes were numerous, with items from

gift baskets to overnight stays at Crystal Pier to rods, reels, fishing tackle of all sorts…to fish-

ing trips both short and long-range, and let’s not forget the art and jewelry.

This is the night we recognize those San Diego Anglers that had excelled at fishing this

past year, along with honoring past Board members and the Volunteer of the Year.

This year, Earl Asbury, founding member, Treasurer and Director of Membership, was

recognized as the Volunteer of the Year.

San Diego Anglers Foundation Upcoming Events for May By Dwayne Patenaude

The first event of the year will be helping out Andy Paluczak at the So Cal Junior Bass An-

gler tournament at Lake Hodges. Our role is simple; provide food for the hungry anglers as

they get off the water after they weigh in their catch. Andy

has a great program going, getting 50 kids fishing with the

pros once a month throughout the summer. They come in

with pretty impressive stringers to win these events, some-

times larger than the adult tourneys the day before. The pro-

gram has outgrown his capability to run them efficiently and

has procured sponsors to do the food service for is crowd. We

have signed up to do one a year, and on Sunday, May 5, it is

our turn at Lake Hodges. We generally get there mid morn-

ing, set everything up, and have lunch ready for them at 12:30. If you would like to help with

this great event, please contact Dwayne at 619-972-1503.

The second event is a Wounded Warriors twilight charter Saturday, May 18, on the “New

Seaforth”. Our volunteer list might need one or two more to help on this fun event. If you

would like to go (SPACE PERMITTING) and volunteer, contact Dwayne at 619-972-1503. At

this time I would like to give a huge thanks to Ex-board member, Dave McMullen, for his gen-

erous donation to pay for this trip. He has been doing this for a few years now, even though he

has made a move to Texas. THANKS from all of us out here in San Diego!!

2019 Summer Bar-B-Que By: Ray Broadfoot

Just a friendly reminder, we will be having our

summer BBQ on Sunday, July 21st, at De Anza Cove,

Mission Bay. San Diego Anglers will be providing ribs,

chicken, hot dogs and hamburgers, including drinks,

paper plates, napkins and utensils. All San Diego An-

glers need to do is bring a side dish or dessert. If your

last name starts with A – M, bring a side dish. If your

last name starts with N – Z, bring a dessert. For more

information, contact Ray Broadfoot at 858-610-1697.

2019 Warriors on the Water By: Ray Broadfoot

This month, on May 18th, we will kick off our 2019 W.O.W. program and will host our

first twilight charter for Warriors on the Water aboard the “New Seaforth”. We expect approx-

imately 50 Warriors coming from Aspire Center, VA Hospital, and Navy Hospital through the

AFYMCA. The San Diego Anglers Foundation offers

free fishing trips to disabled military personnel and

their families by creating an adaptive, community-

based outdoor recreation experience that adds thera-

peutic support during their recovery period. Our

W.O.W. program also allows military members a

chance to have social interactions and bond with new

friends while enjoying the sport of fishing. Plus, it’s

our way of giving back to those who dedicate them-

selves to serving our country.

Thank you to all our donors – these trips would not be possible without your support!

SD Anglers’ 2019 Charters By Dwayne Patenaude

Perfect timing for our charters! Looks like

the yellows started snapping at the islands

and the bass are starting to go. The first

charter of the year is Friday May 3, on the

“Vendetta” (It is full), and the next one is our

first twilight trip of the year on the “New

Seaforth” out of Mission Bay (Has plenty of

open spots). If you are signed up for any of

the upcoming charters, I will be accepting

payments at the next meeting. If you would like to go on the upcoming twilight trip (Friday,

May 17), send me an email at [email protected] to reserve your spot or see me at the meet-

ing. Cost is $10 for adult members and free to kids. Non-member price is $20. Please be at Sea-

forth Sportfishing at around 5pm. If you are coming from North County, please remember the

traffic is pretty bad on Friday evening and the boat cannot wait as we only have a few hours of

fishing. Boat leaves at 6 pm sharp from the dock. Let the charters begin!!
