Brother Knights, Catholic Gentlemen,
As we end this year and plan for 2017 we not only take
time to remember what has been accomplished, but what
is yet to be done. Most importantly remember those we have lost. The passing of Father Louis Giardino, Brother
Knights, Parishioners, family and friends reminds us of
our fragility, and importance of being aware of others in
need.
Our Council continues to grow and I am thankful to work with an exceptional
group of gentlemen as yourselves. We have a number of important events planned in the coming months and your continued efforts will be the measure
of their success. We will be discussing these activities at future Council Busi-
ness meetings. If you are a new member or someone who has been with the
Council for some time and have not participated in one of the other Council activities, then please consider stepping forward to help with these events.
There is never a better opportunity for enjoyable fellowship while giving of
yourself for the greater good.
The “Keep Christ in Christmas” Poster Contest entries were again impressive.
It is always impressive how the children can express the importance of this
holiday on a single sheet of paper and several colors. We will be announcing the winner at the January 2 Council meeting. Recall the winner will select a
charitable organization to receive a $50 donation from the Council submitted
in their name.
In closing, our Council continues to build on your accomplishments which are
rooted in outstanding service to the community, the youth, the Church and
vocations, and our fellow Brothers. Our strength is in your efforts and count-less volunteer hours and support in activities like Special Olympics, Habitat
for Humanity, Culture of Life, exemplification teams, ushers, home ministries,
scouting, Lenten fish fry, and monthly parish breakfasts. This list is only a
small portion of the numerous great and small activities supported because of your desire to help others. I am proud and honored to be considered your
Brother.
As always and especially as we enter into the new year, please take time for yourself and family, aid where possible those less fortunate, and pray for those
in need.
Vivat Jesus,
Steve Gentz Grand Knight, Council 11672

The officers and members of Council 11672 wish a
Happy Birthday to the following members who have
birthdays in January:
Family of the Month
The December 2016
Family of the Month is
the John Bellono family.
John and Patricia are
recognized for their sus-
tained support to the Good Shepherd Church
and the Knights of
Columbus. John and Patricia were instrumen-
tal in another successful
Christmas party through their exceptional plan-
ning and hard work to
ensure all in attendance
enjoyed themselves and were well fed. John is a
fixture at Church helping
with numerous computer problems and other im-
portant activities. He
regularly helps with Council activities, and
maybe most importantly
is consistently and sin-cerely interested in the
well-being of others.
John is an excellent ex-
ample of our core princi-ples of Charity, Unity,
and Fraternity through
his actions and deeds.
Knight of the Month
The Knight of the Month
for December 2016 is
James Mosley. James is
a cornerstone of Good
Shepherd Church opera-
tions, who tirelessly works behind the scenes
to make sure the doors
opens and the roof does not leak. He is our key
conduit in ensuring our
Council activities involv-
ing Church facilities are successfully coordinated.
In addition, James con-
ducts the Keep Christ in
Christmas Poster Con-test, which is an impor-
tant link between the
Council and the youth religious education pro-
gram. It is for James’
sustained exceptional, and often underappreci-
ated service, to the
Council and Good Shep-herd Church that he is
identified as Knight of
the Month. With every
Knight of the Month, when you see James
please extend your hand
in heart filled apprecia-tion and thanks.
Our dear Fr. Louis passed
away December 23. It is a very sad time in our Parish
to lose our Shepherd, but
he is at rest and peace. A
visitation and wake service was held Monday, Decem-
ber 26th at Good Shepherd.
The Funeral Mass was Tuesday, Dec 27th at the
Cathedral of St. Paul in Bir-
mingham followed by burial at Elmwood Cemetery. Fr.
Louis celebrated his 40th
Anniversary as a priest in May 2015.

By Tradition, the
Catholic Church
dedicates the
month of January
to the Holy Name
of Jesus to re-
mind us of the power of Christ's
Name and en-
courages us to pray in His
Name. Keeping Christ's Name
always on our lips is a good way to ensure that we draw ever
nearer to Him. In this prayer of
Petition, we acknowledge the
power of the Holy Name of Je-
sus and ask that our needs be
fulfilled in His Name.
The Holy Name of Jesus
S he phe r d ’ s Wa tch Pa ge 7 January 2017
“I now know why men who have been to
war yearn to reunite. Not to tell stories or look at old pictures. Not to laugh or weep. Comrades gather because they
long to be with the men who once acted their best, men who suffered and sacri-ficed, who were stripped raw, right down to their humanity.
“I did not pick these men. They were de-livered by fate. But I know them in a way I know no other men. I have never given
anyone such trust. They were willing to guard something more precious than my life. They would have carried my reputa-
tion, the memory of me. It was part of the bargain we all made, the reason we were so willing to die for one another.
“I cannot say where we are headed. Ours
are not perfect friendships; those are the province of legend and myth. A few of my comrades drift far from me now,
sending back only occasional word. I know that one day even these could fall to silence. Some of the men will stay close, a couple, perhaps, always at
hand.
“As long as I have memory, I will think of them all, every day. I am sure that when
I leave this world, my last thought will be of my family and my comrades...such good men”.

January Questions
S he phe r d ’ s Wa tch Pa ge 8 January 2017
1. Which plants have
50% of the DNA of a
human being?
Fifty percent of the cof-
fee and tea plants share
the same DNS as a hu-
man being.
2. Caffeine is a natu-
ral substance that is a very effective sub-
stance designed to do
what?
It is a very powerful poi-
son that is deigned to kill
insects and various other animals to protect the
coffee and tea plants.
3. What important
part did coffee play in the history of the
Americas and Europe?
Round trip to Asia from English colonial ports to
obtain tea took about
over 30,000 miles. In the mid17th Century cof-
fee was found to be a
desirable, profitable, and popular drink. To
shorten the transporta-
tion distance and time,
it was found that coffee could grow very well in
the Caribbean islands.
Labor was needed to cultivate and harvest
coffee, so slaves from
Africa were brought in to work the coffee plan-
tations.
Coffee houses were popular in the Americas
and Europe, where edu-
cated men met to dis-
cuss politics and social issues. In fact, the Bos-
ton Tea Party was
planned in a coffee house. The other result
was some of the leaders
of the French Revolution
met in a coffee house.
Coffee house discussion
also led to such things
as he United States
Constitution.
4. In today’s dollars,
what was the value of the tea dumped into
the Boston Harbor,
during the Boston Tea
Party?
The value of the tea in
todays dollars is about
$2,500,000.00.
5. By 1800, the popu-
lation of the United
Kingdom had in-creased from five mil-
lion people in 1650 to
over 22 million people by 1800. What was
the major factor in the
increase in the Popula-tion of the United
Kingdom?
Every class or group of
the British people be-came avid tea drinkers.
To make a pot of tea one
must boil the water used. The British as a
rule did not drink plain
water. The boiling of the water killed viruses
and bacteria that
caused a variety of medical condition that
lead to death.
The increase in popula-
tion also gave the United Kingdom the workforce
to become one of the
major manufacturing powerhouses in the
world.
6. What did St. Fran-
cis of Assisi do on De-
cember 25, 1223?
He assembled the first
Nativity scene in Grec-
cio, Italy.
7. From a historically
perspective what are the dates December
25, 337 and December
25, 352 important to
Christianity?
December 25, 337 is the
earliest possible date
that Christmas may
have been celebrated.
December 25, 352 is the
earliest known docu-mented date that
Christmas was cele-
brated.
8. What did Massa-
chusetts General
Count order on Decem-
ber 25, 1651?
The Massachusetts Gen-
eral Court ordered a fine
(five shillings or approxi-mately $350.00 in today
currency) for "observing
any such day as Christ-
mas."
9. What astronomical
event happened on De-
cember 25, 1758?
Johann Georg
Palitzsch (11 June 1723 – 21 February
1788) was a German
astronomer who became
famous for discovering
the Comet 1P/Halley (better known as Hal-
ley's Comet) on Christ-
mas Day, 1758. Ed-
mond Halley, in 1705, deduced the periodic
nature of this comet,
but Halley had died, be-fore seeing if his predic-
tion would come true.
Halley’s comet may have
been recorded as early as 467 BC, but this is
uncertain. A comet was
recorded in ancient Greece between 468 and
466 BC; its timing, loca-
tion, duration, and as-sociated meteor shower
all suggest it was Halley.[
Halley's returns to the
inner Solar System have
been observed and re-corded by astronomers
since at least 240 BC.
Clear records of the
comet's appearances were made by Chinese,
Babylonian, and medie-
val European chroni-clers, but were not rec-
ognized as reappear-
ances of the same object
at the time.
10. What happened on
the island, later known as the Dominican Re-
public, on December
25, 1492?
Christopher Columbus' ship the Santa Maria

coast of Dominican Re-
public.
